For a stream whose viewers watch on YouTube, you generally do not need to buy a separate video CDN just because the broadcast runs 24/7. Your encoder sends the stream to YouTube, and YouTube handles delivery and transcoding for viewers. A separate distribution service may make sense if you also need to reach viewers outside YouTube or run your own player and delivery experience.
The practical challenges of continuous streaming are usually a reliable source feed, enough upload bandwidth, tested failover, and how you preserve the broadcast—not finding an extra CDN.

What “CDN” means in YouTube Live
In a YouTube-only setup, your encoder sends a source feed to YouTube’s ingest service. YouTube then transcodes the live stream into formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That makes YouTube both the ingest destination and the viewing platform; a 24/7 schedule alone does not create a need for a separate CDN. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance describes its transcoding, while the LiveStreams API uses a “cdn” configuration for ingest details such as protocol and primary or backup addresses. That API terminology does not mean creators must procure a separate CDN.

When a separate video CDN may make sense
You need viewers to watch somewhere other than YouTube
If you plan to serve video through your own site or another destination, YouTube’s delivery path does not automatically deliver that separate viewing experience. Evaluate a distribution service for that audience and player. The exact architecture depends on the destination and requirements; there is no single design established for every operator.
Your actual problem is a weak source feed
A CDN cannot fix a poor encoder output or an inadequate upload connection to YouTube. First check your encoder settings, network capacity, and YouTube stream health. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the stream’s total bitrate. If you send primary and backup feeds at the same time, include both in the bandwidth demand. YouTube’s streaming tips also caution that download speed can be higher than upload speed.

You want resilience against encoder or network failure
Failover can improve resilience, but it does not make a CDN necessary. YouTube advises testing encoder failover, and its LiveStreams API exposes backup ingestion addresses. Whether to maintain a backup encoder and a separate network path depends on how much interruption you can tolerate. Test that the viewer-facing player actually switches to the backup rather than assuming a configured backup will work. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover monitoring and failover testing.

Choose an ingest protocol for the production you have
YouTube supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingest. For routine live streaming, RTMPS is the practical default: it encrypts the feed and works with H.264. HLS and DASH can suit workflows needing particular advanced codecs or higher-resolution formats, but their segment-based delivery generally adds latency. Choose them when the workflow warrants that tradeoff, not simply because the broadcast is continuous. See YouTube’s protocol comparison and its RTMPS ingest guide.

| Protocol | Encryption | Codec support in YouTube’s comparison | Latency and fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP | Unencrypted | H.264 | Routine ingest option, but prefer encrypted RTMPS where supported. |
| RTMPS | Encrypted | H.264 | Suitable for ordinary and lower-latency streaming; the routine choice for most encoder workflows. |
| HLS | Encrypted | H.264 and HEVC | Supports certain 4K/HDR workflows; generally higher latency. |
| DASH | Encrypted | H.264 and VP9 | Can support advanced codec workflows; generally higher latency. |
For RTMP-family encoding, YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Select bitrate from YouTube’s current resolution- and frame-rate-specific table rather than relying on an old copied figure: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Prepare a continuous stream for reliability
Check upload capacity against the real encoder output
- Set the encoder to the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, then verify the upload path under those actual settings.
- Keep YouTube’s recommended 20% of upload bandwidth free. Count the combined bitrate if primary and backup streams are transmitted simultaneously.
- Do not assume a speed test’s download result represents upload capacity. YouTube notes the two can differ.
Preview, monitor, and test backup behavior
- Preview the stream before going live and check YouTube’s stream health once the feed is running.
- Monitor audio and video quality during operation, not just at startup.
- If using redundant encoders, deliberately test failover and confirm the viewer’s player rolls to the backup feed.

Plan for recording and replay limits
YouTube says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Its guidance also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If keeping the complete feed matters, record a local archive and check that the file is growing and usable. You can also consider shorter scheduled sessions if reliable replay is important. Read YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams and turning on DVR.

Do you need a hardware encoder?
Not necessarily. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but does not say every 24/7 creator needs one or endorse a specific model. Treat a hardware encoder as optional equipment when production requirements justify it. If you use one, verify the local archive and test failover as part of setup. YouTube’s live-streaming tips provide its setup guidance.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Unstable stream or poor stream health | Upload capacity may not sustain the encoder bitrate, especially if a backup feed also runs. | Check the real upload path, preserve the recommended 20% headroom, and count both feeds. |
| Backup is configured but viewers still lose the stream | Failover may not work as expected in the actual encoder, network, or player setup. | Test a failure deliberately and verify the viewer-facing player switches to the backup. |
| The full broadcast is missing from the archive | A single session exceeded 12 hours; YouTube warns that such a stream may not be captured at all. | Keep and verify a local recording if the full feed matters; consider shorter scheduled sessions for replay needs. |
| Rewind is unavailable or limited | DVR functionality may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. | Plan replay expectations around YouTube’s long-stream DVR caveat. |
| Viewers outside YouTube cannot use the YouTube stream as the intended destination | The requirement is for a separate viewing experience, not improved YouTube ingest. | Evaluate distribution architecture for that destination independently; YouTube’s guidance does not define one universal setup. |
