Roland V-1HD Review: Is This 1080p HDMI Switcher Worth It?

The Roland V-1HD is worth considering if you need a compact, hands-on switcher for up to four HDMI sources in an HD production. It combines tactile switching, two HDMI outputs for program and preview or multiview, and built-in audio mixing and effects. It is not a 4K or SDI switcher, and streaming to a computer requires an additional capture device: Roland identifies the UVC-01 for that role. Whether it is good value depends on your workflow and current price; the available product information does not establish current market pricing or independent performance tests.

Who the Roland V-1HD suits

The V-1HD is a plausible fit for a small live production, presentation, or event setup with no more than four HDMI sources and an HD output requirement. Its physical source buttons and T-fader suit operators who want to switch between cameras, computers, or other HDMI devices at the hardware panel. A second output can support a separate preview or multiview display, while the built-in audio mixer and production effects may reduce the need for separate equipment.

This is a specification-based fit assessment, not a hands-on review. Before buying, match the unit to your sources, output resolution and frame rate, monitoring needs, audio routing, and path into a streaming computer.

What the V-1HD connects and outputs

Roland’s current product specifications list four Type A HDMI inputs, one HDMI output, and one HDMI preview output. The second output can be configured for program output or preview-oriented use. Roland describes options including an up-next input preview and a four-way multiview screen. See Roland’s V-1HD product specifications and support materials for the manufacturer’s details.

Roland Ultimate Compact V-1HD+ HD Video Switcher
  • professional hd switching solution for live events, livestreaming, or both at once
  • standalone video switcher and 14-channel audio mixer for single operators
  • compact and portable for fast set up
  • familiar interface that’s quick to learn and easy to use
  • technology-assisted automatic video switching

Supported formats include 720/50p and 720/59.94p, and 1080/50i, 1080/59.94i, 1080/50p, and 1080/59.94p, subject to format selection. Output settings include 720p, 1080i, and 1080p at 50 or 59.94. Interlaced input is converted to progressive internally. Roland lists 4:2:2, 8-bit video processing. This is an HD switcher, not a 4K device.

The specifications also list HDCP support. Do not assume that every protected HDMI source will work as intended in your setup; verify compatibility for the specific source and use case.

Preview, switching, and production effects

The V-1HD is designed around hardware operation, with illuminated source controls and a T-fader. Roland lists CUT and MIX transitions, 30 WIPE types, and 11 TRANSFORMER types, along with picture-in-picture, split layouts, freeze, and output fade. Available image effects include negative, emboss, colorize, color pass, posterize, silhouette, monochrome, and edge detection. It also supports luminance and chroma keying.

Roland’s support materials describe automatic input scanning at intervals from 1 to 120 seconds and BPM-synchronized switching. The Version 2.0 update is described as adding a one-third picture-in-picture size, automatic scan, multiview audio meters, panel lock, and a quick reset action. These are manufacturer-listed capabilities, not an independent assessment of how well they perform in a particular production.

Audio: inputs, outputs, and processing

Roland lists embedded audio from HDMI inputs, an RCA line input, and a stereo-mini microphone input with plug-in power support. Audio outputs include HDMI, RCA, and a stereo-mini headphone output. The listed processing is 24-bit/48 kHz, and the product materials describe EQ, delay, compressor, high-pass filter, gate, reverb, and mastering effects. Roland’s support page describes a 12-channel digital audio mixer.

These specifications make the built-in audio facilities worth considering if you want to mix sources in the switcher. They do not establish that its mixer will replace every external audio workflow; check the connections and routing you need for your event.

Streaming to a computer requires an added device

The V-1HD should not be confused with a switcher that has native USB streaming output. Roland’s product resources describe adding the UVC-01 USB video capture device to bring the V-1HD’s signal into a computer for streaming. Confirm current availability and compatibility for your setup before purchasing the additional hardware. The distinction matters when comparing total system cost: the switcher alone is not the complete computer-streaming path documented by Roland.

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live continuously using uploaded video rather than switch live camera or computer sources, that is a different job from operating a hardware video switcher. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube, not a camera-streaming service or a substitute for HDMI switching. You upload a recording or create a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and start the stream. Details are at StreamNeo.

Software, firmware, and physical details

Roland’s support page currently lists V-1HD System Program Ver. 2.07 and V-1HD RCS Ver. 2.0.1 for Windows and macOS. Software and firmware versions and operating-system compatibility can change, so check the V-1HD support page for the current files and instructions before updating or building a computer workflow.

What to check before buying

  • Source count and connectors: The V-1HD has four HDMI inputs. It is not an SDI switcher; choose a different model or plan a suitable signal-conversion path if your production uses SDI.
  • Resolution and frame rate: Confirm that HD formats up to 1080p at the listed rates meet the production requirement. It does not support 4K output.
  • Monitoring: Decide whether you need a separate preview or multiview display and check the intended second-output configuration.
  • Streaming path: If you need to stream through a computer, account for Roland’s documented UVC-01 capture-device approach and confirm compatibility.
  • Audio routing: Compare the listed HDMI, RCA, microphone, headphone, and processing options with your microphones and sound system.
  • Current value: Current street price, stock, and used-market value are not established here. Check contemporary sellers and compare the cost of any required capture device and monitoring hardware before deciding.

Common setup problems to check

No picture from an HDMI source

Check that the source is connected to one of the four HDMI inputs and is outputting a format supported by the selected V-1HD format. The supported formats are HD; do not expect 4K input or output. For protected sources, Roland lists HDCP support, but compatibility should be verified for the intended source.

Preview or multiview does not appear as expected

Confirm which role is assigned to the second HDMI output and connect the monitor to that output. Roland documents program, up-next preview, and four-way multiview options; the output’s behavior depends on configuration.

A computer does not receive the switcher feed

The V-1HD does not provide the native USB streaming output implied by a direct USB connection to a computer. Roland points to the UVC-01 as an additional capture device for streaming. Check its compatibility and connection path for the computer and software you plan to use.

Audio is missing or routed incorrectly

Check whether the intended audio is embedded in the selected HDMI input or connected through the RCA line or stereo-mini microphone input, then verify the chosen output path. The available outputs include HDMI, RCA, and headphone monitoring.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a continuous YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo keeps the stream running in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode the video or use quality tiers. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card required, and monthly service is $9.99 per month.
