Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To save only an iframe’s visible rectangle, locate the iframe element in the parent page and call its WebElement screenshot method, such as iframe.screenshot("iframe.png") in Selenium’s Python binding. To save the whole current browser window, use driver.save_screenshot("page.png") instead. Switching into a frame is needed to find or operate on elements inside it; it does not turn a driver-level screenshot into an iframe-only image.
Choose the screenshot boundary
- Only the iframe: capture the iframe WebElement from the parent document. The image is limited to the element’s displayed rectangle.
- The current browser window: use a driver screenshot method. Selenium’s Python API describes these as current-window captures.
- Elements inside the iframe: switch WebDriver into the frame before locating or interacting with its inner-document elements. This is a DOM context change, not a screenshot crop.
Capture only the iframe in Selenium Python
Start from the top-level page, locate the iframe in that page, then use the element screenshot API supported by your installed Selenium Python version:

from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
iframe = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "iframe")
iframe.screenshot("iframe.png")
This saves the iframe element as a PNG file. The code assumes driver is an initialized WebDriver and that the page has loaded far enough for the iframe element to be found. The Selenium API references consulted are labeled version 4.50.0; check your installed binding’s documentation for the exact method support. Selenium’s Python reference describes driver screenshot methods, but this evidence does not establish a browser/version matrix for element screenshots.
Find the correct iframe
If there is more than one iframe, use a selector that identifies the intended one rather than selecting the first generic iframe. For example, if the page gives the frame a stable ID, locate it with By.ID. The locator must match an iframe in the current document context.
#1 Best Overall
Capture the whole current browser window
If the evidence should include the page around the frame, use a driver-level screenshot instead:
driver.save_screenshot("page.png")
Selenium’s Python API also documents get_screenshot_as_file(path), PNG bytes, and base64 screenshot methods. These driver methods capture the current window; calling them after switching into an iframe does not make the result an iframe-only crop.

Switch into an iframe to inspect its contents
Selenium begins in the top-level document. To locate elements inside an iframe, first find the iframe in its parent document, then switch to it. After working in the frame, return to the outer page:
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
iframe = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "iframe")
driver.switch_to.frame(iframe)
# Locate or interact with elements inside the iframe here.
driver.switch_to.default_content()
Remove the leading space before driver.switch_to.default_content() if copying the snippet exactly into a Python file; it should align with the other top-level statements. The frame guide also documents switching by frame name or index, and returning one level with parent_frame() when working with nested frames. For example:

driver.switch_to.parent_frame() # return one frame level
driver.switch_to.default_content() # return to the top-level page
Common problems and fixes
- The inner element cannot be found: Selenium searches the current document context. Locate the iframe in its parent first, switch with
driver.switch_to.frame(iframe), then search for the inner element. - You need an outer-page element after working inside the frame: call
driver.switch_to.default_content(), orparent_frame()to move up one level in a nested frame structure. - The screenshot contains the page rather than just the iframe: use the iframe WebElement screenshot method for an element crop; driver screenshot methods capture the current window.
- The element screenshot method is unavailable: verify support in the documentation for the Selenium binding and version installed in the project. Do not assume identical element-screenshot behavior across languages or browser versions.
- The iframe locator matches the wrong frame or none: inspect the parent page’s iframe attributes and use a more specific CSS selector, ID, or other suitable locator. The iframe must be located before switching into it.
Or skip the browser setup
For a URL-based screenshot rather than a Selenium test artifact, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. Its capture can accept cookie and consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.
One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF. This example uses PNG output by file extension; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.png
The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create an account at ScreenshotNeo sign-up to try the free allowance.

Sources and scope
Selenium’s frame interaction guide explains frame switching and returning to the default content. The Python WebDriver API reference documents current-window screenshot methods. The guide page metadata reports a July 29, 2025 modification, and the API reference is labeled Selenium 4.50.0. Code here was not browser-tested; verify method availability against the exact binding and version used in your project.
