Install Playwright and its WebKit browser, then run this script. Playwright launches browsers headless by default; set headless: false if you need to see the browser window. See the Playwright Library guide for the documented launch workflow.

For example, replace the basic screenshot call with await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.webp', fullPage: true }); to save a full-page WebP image. Consult the API documentation for exact option shapes and additional controls.
One-off screenshots versus visual regression tests
page.screenshot() writes an image; it does not determine whether a page has changed. For visual regression testing, use Playwright Test’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the result with the expected baseline. Keep the environment consistent when updating or comparing baselines. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode. Pinning and reusing a consistent environment helps reduce unexpected differences.
Troubleshooting
- WebKit fails to launch: install the browser binary with
npx playwright install webkit. If running in a constrained CI environment, check Playwright’s installation guidance for the required host dependencies. - The screenshot file is missing: confirm the process completed successfully and that the destination directory exists and is writable. A relative
pathis resolved from the process’s working directory. - The image shows only part of the page: that is the default viewport capture. Add
fullPage: trueif you need the scrollable page. - The saved format is unexpected: use a matching extension such as
.png,.jpegor.webp; Playwright infers the format from the path. - Repeated test images differ: check that the browser version, operating system and other rendering conditions match, then control animations or mask changing regions where appropriate.
