Use S3 Versioning as an additional recovery layer for accidental overwrites or deletions—not as a substitute for an application-level history structure.
Design a history that is easy to find and recover
S3 identifies an object by its bucket, key, and, when versioning is enabled, optional version ID. AWS does not prescribe a screenshot-history schema, so choose a key and manifest that suit how your application will search and retrieve captures. AWS: How Amazon S3 works.

Use a distinct key for every capture
A practical pattern includes a site identifier, UTC timestamp, and optional capture variant:

Use a stable site identifier rather than a raw URL as the directory component; URLs contain characters and query strings that make keys harder to manage. Preserve the original URL in a manifest. If you take multiple captures at the same timestamp, add a unique capture ID or sequence so one object does not overwrite another.
Record the context in a manifest
Store a JSON manifest alongside each capture or in a separate index, according to how you query the archive. Include fields that let you interpret and reproduce a capture:
- Original page URL and UTC capture timestamp.
- Viewport width and height, device or variant identifier, and whether the capture is full-page.
- Image format or PDF status.
- Capture software and version, plus relevant capture settings.
- The S3 key for the image and, if applicable, its version ID.
A per-capture manifest might be named metadata.json within the timestamped prefix. Do not put sensitive URL query parameters or credentials into broadly accessible metadata; protect the manifest with the same access controls as the image.

- Create a dedicated bucket in the AWS Region appropriate to your application, data residency requirements, and recovery plan. Keep S3 Block Public Access enabled unless you have a clearly justified, reviewed public-access requirement. AWS: Block public access.
- Choose access permissions. Give the capture process only the bucket and object permissions it needs; grant readers narrowly scoped access through IAM identities or roles rather than making the archive public. AWS: Security best practices for Amazon S3.
- Define the key and manifest convention before uploading. Use a consistent UTC time representation and preserve enough capture context to distinguish variants.
- Upload each new capture under a new key. Do not reuse a key if the application must address each historical capture directly. Set the correct content type, such as
image/pngorimage/webp, and upload the manifest. - Enable Versioning if recovery is needed. Versioning preserves revisions to a key, while distinct keys make the normal capture history explicit. They solve related but different problems.
- Set retention and encryption rules based on policy and access patterns, and test retrieval and deletion behavior before relying on the archive.
For example, using the AWS CLI with credentials and a bucket already configured:
aws s3 cp ./capture.png s3://YOUR_BUCKET/screenshots/example-com/2026/10/03/20261003T142530Z/desktop.png --content-type image/png

Replace YOUR_BUCKET and the example key with your bucket and generated capture key. Your application should generate a new timestamp or capture ID for every capture and upload the corresponding manifest as well.
Should you use S3 Versioning?
Enable Versioning when you want a way to recover prior object revisions after an accidental overwrite or deletion. In a versioned bucket, overwriting a key creates a newer version; deleting a key generally adds a delete marker that hides the current key while prior versions remain. AWS: Using versioning in S3 buckets.

| Choice | What it means for screenshot history | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| Distinct key per capture | Each capture has a directly addressable object key; listing by prefix can expose the history. | You need an explicit archive and straightforward retrieval. |
| One stable key with Versioning | Each replacement is a version of the same key; history retrieval must account for version IDs. | Your application intentionally treats one key as the current image and needs revision recovery. |
| Distinct keys plus Versioning | Captures remain individually addressable, and revisions to any key can also be recovered. | You need both explicit capture history and protection from mistakes. |
Versioning increases the number of retained object versions unless you clean them up. Pair it with a lifecycle policy for noncurrent versions if that aligns with your recovery window.
Automate retention without losing needed history
S3 Lifecycle rules can transition objects to other storage classes or expire them. Set durations from actual retention requirements, access frequency, recovery objectives, and current AWS pricing; there is no universal period that is right for every screenshot archive. AWS: Managing your storage lifecycle.
Account for versioned objects
In a versioned bucket, distinguish expiration of current objects from cleanup of noncurrent versions. A delete marker can remain after an object is deleted, so consider expired-delete-marker cleanup where it applies. Test lifecycle behavior in a non-production prefix and verify that the retention window still permits required restores. AWS: Deleting object versions.

Choose storage transitions from access patterns
Recent screenshots that are read often may belong in a readily accessible storage class; older, rarely retrieved history may be a candidate for lifecycle transition. Check each class’s current pricing and retrieval characteristics before applying a rule. No project-specific storage-cost estimate can be inferred without capture volume, average object size, retention, request rate, and Region.
Keep the archive private and encrypted
For new uploads, S3 applies SSE-S3 encryption at rest by default. Configure SSE-KMS when your key-management requirements call for KMS capabilities or customer-controlled key policies. Require HTTPS/TLS for requests in transit and maintain Block Public Access for a private archive. AWS: Protecting data with encryption and AWS: Enforcing encryption in transit.
For stronger retention enforcement, S3 Object Lock can prevent deletion or overwrite of protected object versions for a defined period or indefinitely. It is a deliberate WORM control, not just another recovery switch: a locked version cannot be removed by Lifecycle expiration before retention ends, though a delete marker may still be created. Object Lock also does not protect access to encryption keys or prevent deletion of KMS keys. AWS: Locking objects with Object Lock.
Plan auditing and regional recovery
Choose logs and inventory for the questions you need to answer
CloudTrail can record S3 object-level data events for operations such as PutObject, GetObject, and DeleteObject; server access logging can provide detailed bucket-request records. Select the controls based on your audit requirements and account for their setup and costs. AWS: Logging Amazon S3 API calls using AWS CloudTrail.
S3 Inventory provides scheduled reports on objects and can include information such as encryption, replication, and Object Lock status. It is not a real-time view: AWS says inventory report generation can take up to 48 hours. For the most current Object Lock retention value, query the relevant object metadata directly rather than relying on Inventory. AWS: Amazon S3 Inventory.

Use replication only if the recovery plan needs another Region
Cross-Region Replication copies objects asynchronously to a destination bucket and requires Versioning on both source and destination buckets. Assess whether that matches your recovery objectives and current costs; replication is not a substitute for a deliberate retention and access policy. AWS: Replicating objects.
Performance, durability, and cost considerations
S3 Standard is described by AWS as designed for 99.999999999% durability and 99.99% availability of objects over a given year; the year is not stated in the retrieved AWS documentation. These service figures are not a screenshot-retention guarantee, do not prevent accidental deletion, and do not satisfy a regional recovery requirement by themselves. AWS: Data protection in Amazon S3.
For a screenshot archive, the operational cost drivers include stored bytes, retained noncurrent versions, request volume, lifecycle transitions, retrieval patterns, logging, and replication. Keep keys and manifests searchable through a clear prefix scheme or an application index; a growing bucket can make ad hoc listing a poor substitute for a purpose-built index. Estimate costs with your expected capture rate and current regional pricing rather than assuming a single per-screenshot cost.
Troubleshooting common archive problems
- A new capture appears to replace the old one: the application reused a key. Include a unique UTC timestamp or capture ID in each capture key.
- A deleted capture still consumes storage or remains recoverable: in a versioned bucket, a delete marker can hide the key while older versions remain. Inspect versions and configure noncurrent-version cleanup only after setting a suitable recovery window.
- Lifecycle expiration has not removed an old version: check whether the object is a noncurrent version, whether it is protected by Object Lock, and whether the rule applies to its prefix and age. Locked versions cannot expire before their retention ends.
- An application receives AccessDenied: check the calling role’s permissions, bucket policy, Block Public Access settings, and any required KMS key permissions. Avoid solving a private-archive access problem by making the bucket public.
- An inventory report does not reflect a recent change: Inventory is scheduled and may take up to 48 hours to generate; use a direct query for time-sensitive object state.
- A replica is missing or delayed: replication is asynchronous. Confirm Versioning is enabled on both buckets and review the replication configuration and status.

Can I store PDFs as well as image screenshots in S3?
Yes. Upload the PDF as an object with a distinct key and record its format and capture context in the manifest.
Does S3 define a standard website screenshot-history schema?
No. The bucket, key, and optional version ID identify an S3 object; the timestamped naming pattern and manifest fields are application design choices.
