Cloudinary’s URL2PNG add-on is documented for screenshots of public websites; its documentation reviewed here does not establish that it can sign in to a webpage or reuse an authenticated browser session. For a page that requires an interactive login, capture it in an authorized browser session first, then upload the screenshot to Cloudinary if you need Cloudinary storage or image delivery.
Choose the right Cloudinary workflow for the protected content
The key distinction is whether the URL points directly to a media file protected by HTTP Basic Authentication or to a webpage that requires a user login. Cloudinary documents different workflows for these cases.

- Direct image or video URL with HTTP Basic Authentication: Cloudinary Fetch can retrieve certain protected remote media URLs. Keep credentials on the server or use an auto-upload mapping; do not expose them in client-side code. See Cloudinary Fetch documentation.
- Webpage with a login form, application session, or required browser cookies: sign in through an authorized browser workflow and capture the rendered page. URL2PNG’s reviewed documentation does not establish interactive login or session reuse. Upload the resulting image to Cloudinary if needed.
- Public webpage: URL2PNG is Cloudinary’s website screenshot add-on. It requires add-on registration, and its dynamic transformations are signed or eagerly generated by default unless the account’s Console settings allow unsigned transformations. See Cloudinary URL2PNG documentation.
A Cloudinary transformation signature protects the Cloudinary request; it is not a password or session credential for the target website.

Use a browser automation workflow that you are authorized to run and that can establish the same kind of session a legitimate user would use. The exact login steps depend on the site, so keep authentication-specific selectors and secrets in your own secure configuration rather than treating them as universal Cloudinary settings.

- Open the target page in an automation-controlled browser and complete the approved login flow. Use a test account or an account with only the access needed for the capture.
- Wait for a reliable signal that the authenticated page is ready, such as a known page element or completion of the relevant network activity. Avoid relying only on a fixed delay when page load time varies.
- Capture the rendered page to a local image file in the format your workflow needs. Confirm the capture contains the authenticated content and does not include sensitive information that should not be stored or shared.
- Upload the image from a trusted server using Cloudinary’s Upload API. Cloudinary documents authenticated server-side requests using API key and API secret Basic Authentication or signature-based authentication. Never expose the API secret in public client-side code. See Cloudinary Upload API reference.
This approach separates the steps: the browser handles the webpage’s interactive authentication, while Cloudinary receives an already captured image. Cloudinary also documents remote URL uploads, but remote file ingestion is not evidence of an interactive browser login.
Use Cloudinary Fetch only for directly protected media
If the protected resource is an image or video served directly with HTTP Basic Authentication, Fetch may fit. Cloudinary describes supplying credentials in the remote URL, but credentials in URLs can be exposed through delivery URLs and logs. Prefer server-side handling or an auto-upload mapping to avoid putting them in public-facing URLs.

Before troubleshooting a Fetch URL, check whether Fetch is enabled or requires a signed URL in your Cloudinary environment, whether the source host is allowed by any allowed-fetch-domain restriction, and whether the URL or credentials contain characters that need URL encoding. Cloudinary documents that Fetch follows up to five redirects; a request that exceeds that limit can return a 404. These Fetch details concern retrieval of remote media, not rendering an authenticated HTML page.

Troubleshooting
- URL2PNG returns a public or logged-out view: the reviewed URL2PNG documentation does not establish interactive sign-in or authenticated-session reuse. Capture the page in an authorized logged-in browser workflow instead.
- A URL2PNG transformation is rejected: confirm URL2PNG is registered on the Cloudinary account and check whether the request must be signed or eagerly generated under the account’s settings.
- Fetch returns 404 for protected media: check the Fetch enablement and signing requirements, domain restrictions, URL encoding, and redirect count. Cloudinary documents a five-redirect limit.
- The browser capture is blank or incomplete: wait for an authenticated-page readiness signal before capturing; verify that the login succeeded and that the browser is authorized to access the content.
- Cloudinary upload fails or credentials are exposed: perform the Upload API call server-side, keep the API secret out of client code, and use the documented authentication method appropriate to the request.
Security and handling considerations
Capture only pages and accounts you are authorized to access. Treat screenshots as potentially sensitive copies of the page: limit who can retrieve them and avoid exposing credentials in source code, URLs, public logs, or browser-delivered scripts. Cloudinary specifically cautions against exposing Basic Authentication credentials for protected Fetch URLs and against exposing the Upload API secret in public client-side code.
