What must survive the restart
An OBS setup depends on several separate pieces. A restart can expose a problem in any of them:

- Scene Collection: holds your scenes and sources, including the Media Source entries and their settings. OBS’s Sources Guide explains how scenes and sources are organized.
- Profile: holds streaming, video, and output settings. OBS’s Profiles guide describes exporting Profile settings as JSON and keeping Profiles separate from Scene Collections.
- Media files: a Media Source points to a local file; the scene configuration does not make that external file part of the backup.
- Runtime context: the OBS process must be able to find the right configuration and read the files. A service, container, or login session may run under a different account or environment than the one you used when setting up OBS.
Backing up only the Profile is not enough to restore your scenes and sources. Likewise, preserving the scene configuration does not guarantee that the referenced media files or their mount points will be available after boot.

Save the Scene Collection
In OBS, open the Scene Collection menu and export the collection you use for the YouTube stream. Keep the exported copy somewhere that will not disappear if the server’s temporary or disposable runtime storage is replaced. The Scene Collection is the part that preserves the scene and source arrangement.

Export the Profile
In OBS, open the Profile menu and use its export option to save the Profile settings as JSON. This preserves settings such as the streaming destination, video, and output configuration; it does not replace the Scene Collection export.
Keep both exports. If OBS opens after reboot with a blank or unexpected scene, check whether it loaded the intended Scene Collection. If the scenes are right but streaming or output settings differ, check the Profile.

Check every Media Source path
- Open each source’s properties. In the scene that uses it, select the Media Source and inspect its file setting. Record the path and the file it is meant to play.
- Confirm the file is still at that exact path. After reboot, check that the file exists there. A moved file, changed mount point, or unavailable disk can leave the source configured but unable to play.
- Check access as the OBS process’s user. The account that can read a file in your interactive shell may not be the account used by an automatically started OBS process. Confirm that the actual process can access the file and its parent directories.
- Check mounted storage before OBS starts. If media is on a separate disk or network share, verify that the mount is present and readable when OBS launches. A path on an unavailable mount can look like a missing file even though the media still exists elsewhere.
- Preview playback in OBS. Once the path and access check out, inspect the source in the scene and confirm that video and audio play as expected.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes local media playback and its playback controls. Its portable-mode guidance also warns that scene media files are not carried along with portable configuration. Linux portable mode is not supported, so do not use it as a workaround for missing media or configuration.
Make sure the restarted process loads the same OBS setup
If OBS loads a different collection, a different Profile, or a new-looking setup, investigate which configuration the restarted process is using before changing the media paths. Compare how OBS is launched during normal operation with how it is launched after boot. In particular, check the runtime user and whether a service, container, or login session is involved.

There is no single safe automatic-start recipe for every Linux server. Distribution packages, Flatpak or container installations, service accounts, display/session requirements, permissions, and mount arrangements can differ. Do not copy a systemd unit or assume a configuration directory without verifying it against the OBS package and launch context on your own machine. OBS’s Linux Installation article is a starting point for installation-specific guidance, but it does not establish one universal startup arrangement for all these environments.
Which playback settings help—and which do not

Choose playback settings for how you want media to behave during normal scene changes. Treat configuration backups, stable file paths, and startup access as separate persistence requirements.

Run a reboot test before the next broadcast
- Save the Scene Collection and export the Profile.
- Restart the server and allow required storage mounts and other dependencies to become available.
- Launch OBS the same way the production setup will launch it, rather than relying only on a manual session that uses a different account or environment.
- Confirm that the expected Scene Collection and Profile loaded.
- Inspect each Media Source, then verify both video and audio in a short recording or test stream.
- Fix any missing configuration, inaccessible path, permission, or mount-readiness issue and repeat the reboot test before depending on the setup.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing settings before streaming. A reboot test applies that principle to the specific failure point: whether the real post-restart process can load and play the intended sources. Starting OBS again does not, by itself, establish whether YouTube will resume the same broadcast or preserve the same event after an interruption; the outcome and any reconnect window depend on behavior not established here.

Troubleshoot the symptom you see
OBS opens with a blank scene or the wrong scenes
- Check that the restarted process loaded the intended Scene Collection.
- Compare its runtime user and launch context with the working setup.
- Restore the Scene Collection export if the correct collection is missing or damaged; do not expect the Profile export to restore scenes.
The source is present but blank or will not play
- Check the path in the Media Source properties and verify that the file exists at that exact location.
- Confirm the OBS process can read the file and its parent directories.
- If the file is on mounted storage, verify the mount is available before OBS launches and points to the expected location.
- Confirm the file is a supported local audio or video format, then test playback in OBS.
Playback works manually but fails after automatic startup
- Check whether automatic startup uses a different user, configuration context, or runtime arrangement.
- Verify file permissions and mount readiness for that process, not just for your interactive account.
- Check the installation and launch method for your distribution and package rather than applying a generic service recipe.
The file plays, but starts or repeats at the wrong time
- Review Loop, Restart playback when source becomes active, and Close file when inactive in the Media Source properties.
- These settings govern playback behavior; if the file cannot be found, return to the path, permissions, and mount checks.
