Save Playwright’s authenticated browser state after a verified sign-in, then load that state into a new browser context before opening the page you want to capture. The saved state can include cookies and local storage—not just cookies—so first check how the target site stores authentication. After navigating, confirm the page is actually signed in before taking the screenshot.
1. Save the authenticated browser state
For a reusable setup, sign in once, wait until the site has completed its login flow, and save the context state to a local file. A final URL or a recognizable signed-in UI element can confirm that authentication is complete; a click on the login button alone does not.

Some sites set authentication cookies during redirects, so save only after the final destination or a reliable authenticated UI condition. Playwright’s authentication guide describes setup projects that save state after sign-in and make it available to test projects.
Keep the state file private
Create the directory and exclude it from version control before saving credentials:

If state is only needed during a test run, Playwright’s guide suggests using the test project’s output directory, which is cleaned before each run.
2. Restore the saved state and capture the page
Pass the state file when creating a new browser context. Then open the target URL, wait for a site-specific signed-in signal and capture the viewport, full page or a single element as needed.

If you have no such selector, wait for the expected post-login URL or another site-specific condition, then verify the rendered content before capture. Playwright documents the viewport and full-page options in its screenshot guide; a locator can capture an individual element, and omitting path returns an image buffer instead of writing a file.

For the exact installed version, check your package manifest or run npx playwright --version. The API’s version notes matter if you are relying on newer IndexedDB or WebAuthn support.
4. Use Playwright Test setup projects when tests need the state
If multiple tests need the same authenticated session, the Playwright Test authentication guide recommends a setup project that signs in and saves state before dependent test projects start. Configure those projects to load the saved file as their storageState. A setup can save state after waiting for the final URL or a site-specific authenticated UI condition.

Sharing one account is appropriate only when tests do not interfere with each other’s server-side state. If tests run in parallel and modify shared data, use separate accounts per worker to avoid collisions.

- The screenshot shows a login page. The state may have expired, the login flow may not have finished when it was saved, or the application may rely on storage not captured in the file. Sign in again, save only after a verified authenticated condition, and check whether the site uses IndexedDB or session storage.
- The file loads but authentication is still missing. Confirm that the state file path is correct and that you pass it to the same context that opens the target page. If the app relies on session storage, restore it separately before application code runs.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete. Navigation alone does not establish that the content is ready. Wait for a site-specific selector, final URL or visible content condition before capturing; Playwright does not prescribe one universal readiness check for every website.
- Authentication works locally but fails in parallel tests. Tests may be changing shared server-side state while using one account. Give parallel workers separate accounts when their actions can interfere.
- A newer state option is unavailable. Check the installed Playwright version. IndexedDB capture is documented from v1.51 and virtual WebAuthn credentials from v1.61.
- The saved file is missing in a clean checkout or CI run. If it is excluded from version control, create it securely as part of the test setup or provide it through an appropriately protected environment-specific workflow. Do not solve this by committing live authentication state.
