How to Add Subtitles to a Prerecorded Video Loop on YouTube Live

For subtitles viewers can always see, burn the text into the video or add a synchronized text overlay in OBS, then loop the video as a Media Source. For captions viewers can toggle in YouTube’s player, you need a separate live-caption feed: YouTube documents embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions or supported software that sends captions over HTTP POSTs. An ordinary uploaded SRT or other subtitle file is not, by itself, a live caption feed.

Choose between visible subtitles and live closed captions

First decide how viewers should see the words. Subtitles composed into the broadcast picture are always visible and work with a basic OBS playback setup. Live closed captions are delivered as caption data to YouTube and can be toggled in the player, subject to its controls. YouTube’s requirement is direct: “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.” YouTube Help: Live caption requirements

Burn subtitles into the video Text always visible in the picture Edit and export the video with subtitles composited To change text or language, edit and export the video again.
OBS text or graphics overlay Text always visible when the source is in the program output An OBS text/graphics source and a way to synchronize it with the clip Test timing at each restart. OBS’s documented Media Sources guidance does not establish an end-to-end sidecar-file synchronization workflow across repeated loops.
OBS VLC Video subtitle display Subtitle track appears in the composed picture VLC installed, a supported media subtitle track, and subtitles enabled in the VLC Video source This documents on-screen display, not delivery of YouTube-toggleable captions.
Live closed-caption delivery A caption track viewers can toggle, subject to YouTube’s playback controls Encoder output with embedded 608/708 captions or supported caption software sending captions over HTTP POSTs Compatibility and synchronization depend on the encoder or provider; verify the actual output.

See OBS Project’s Media Sources guide and YouTube’s live caption requirements for the documented capabilities and ingest methods.

Add always-visible subtitles with OBS

  1. Prepare the video. For the most predictable result, render the subtitles into the picture before streaming. Alternatively, prepare an OBS text/graphics overlay and a reliable way to keep it synchronized with the clip. Do not assume that OBS or YouTube will turn an ordinary SRT sidecar into a live caption feed.
  2. Add and loop the clip. In OBS, add a Media Source, select the local video file, and enable Loop. OBS documents that the source restarts after playback finishes. For a playlist, use the VLC Video source: OBS documents Loop Playlist and subtitle-track display options, and VLC must be installed.
  3. Connect OBS to YouTube Live. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s password/address for sending the feed; keep it private. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and stream settings guidance.
  4. Check the preview before going public. Start the encoder and inspect the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check that the subtitles are readable and synchronized, particularly across the cut from the last frame back to the first. YouTube recommends testing the stream and checking its preview; see its live streaming tips and streaming tips.
  5. Monitor the live output. Watch and listen for problems during the event, including subtitle timing, audio, and video. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder ahead of time and monitoring stream quality continuously.

Set up viewer-toggleable live captions

  1. Confirm the output method first. Your encoder or caption software must send captions using a method YouTube supports: embedded EIA 608/CEA 708, or supported software that sends captions over HTTP POSTs. The caption feature must be in the outgoing live feed; selecting or uploading an ordinary subtitle file does not supply it.
  2. For embedded captions, configure both ends. In the YouTube Live stream’s Closed captions setup, select Embedded 608/708, then configure the encoder to output EIA 608 or CEA 708 captions. YouTube says the standard supports up to four language tracks, but YouTube currently supports one track for its documented embedded 608/708 route. Check the current details in YouTube’s live caption requirements and live streaming tips.
  3. For HTTP caption delivery, follow the provider’s YouTube-supported setup. YouTube names supported software and providers, including StreamText.Net, and directs vendors to contact YouTube for caption-ingestion information. Use the provider’s instructions; do not guess an ingestion URL or assume an unlisted tool is supported.
  4. Test against the whole loop. Verify captions against the prerecorded audio and watch the restart boundary. Confirm that the chosen encoder or provider actually outputs the supported live-caption format. YouTube’s documentation does not establish that a basic OBS setup converts an SRT sidecar into that format.

Why uploading a subtitle file to YouTube is different

YouTube’s Add subtitles and captions workflow adds a subtitle track to an uploaded video. A live stream has a different requirement: caption data must be sent to the stream through a supported embedded or HTTP delivery path. Do not assume that subtitles attached to an uploaded video will carry over to a separate live event or become its live captions.

Keep the loop running without a computer at home

Optional dedicated hardware

If you specifically need scheduled prerecorded playback without a computer, YouTube’s verified-encoder information describes the AJA HELO Plus and its PlayToStream functionality. This is a specialized hardware route; it is not required for the OBS method above. The listing establishes the function, not current availability or price. See YouTube’s verified encoder list.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and it does not replace the separate setup required for YouTube-toggleable live captions: if captions must be viewer-toggleable, arrange a supported live-caption delivery path.
