How to Cancel or Turn Off Automatic Renewal for Nintendo Switch Online

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn off Nintendo Switch Online automatic renewal at least 48 hours before your membership expires. The purchasing Nintendo Account can do this on a Switch console or at accounts.nintendo.com/portal. Disabling renewal stops the next charge but does not end your current paid term; Nintendo keeps the membership active until its expiration and does not refund unused time.

What you need to know before canceling

Nintendo Switch Online cancellation is technically a change to automatic renewal, not an immediate termination. Your current subscription remains usable through the end of the period you already paid for. To prevent the next renewal charge, make the change no later than 48 hours before the expiration time.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Use the purchasing account. Only the Nintendo Account that bought the membership can change its automatic-renewal setting.
  • Allow the full 48-hour margin. Nintendo says the subscription amount may be deducted no sooner than 48 hours before expiration unless automatic renewal is canceled.
  • Expect no prorated refund. Turning off renewal does not produce a refund or credit for the remaining days in the current term.
  • Check the plan type. When a family membership expires, Nintendo Switch Online access ends for every member of that family group, not only for the purchaser.

The exact command can look different depending on your country or region, your console generation, and system software. Labels such as Cancel Your Subscription by Turning Off Automatic Renewal, Cancel Your Pass by Turning Off Auto-Renewal, and Terminate Automatic Renewal describe the same action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This setting controls the next billing event. It does not delete your Nintendo Account, remove downloaded games, or erase local save data. It simply tells Nintendo not to renew the Nintendo Switch Online term that is currently scheduled to end.

Choose where to turn off renewal

Method Where the setting is located Account required Best use
Switch 2 Nintendo eShop > profile picture > Account Information > cancellation option Nintendo Account that purchased the membership Change the setting directly on a Switch 2
Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED Model Nintendo eShop > profile picture > Account Information > Nintendo Switch Online Nintendo Account that purchased the membership Change the setting on an earlier Switch-family console
Phone or computer Nintendo Account portal > Nintendo Switch Online > Active Plan Nintendo Account that purchased the membership Use a browser when the console is unavailable

Regardless of the device, submit the change at least 48 hours before the expiration deadline. A family member signed in with a different account cannot change the purchaser’s setting.

The browser route is useful when the console is being repaired, is away from home, or is shared with other players. You do not need to have the Switch powered on for the account-portal method; you do need access to the correct Nintendo Account credentials.

Turn off automatic renewal on Nintendo Switch 2

  1. Open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.
  2. When prompted, choose the Nintendo Account that purchased the Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  3. Select the profile picture in the upper-right corner to open Account Information.
  4. Scroll to Cancel Your Subscription by Turning Off Automatic Renewal. Your region or software version may show slightly different wording, such as Terminate Automatic Renewal.
  5. Follow the on-screen confirmation prompts and finish the cancellation.

Nintendo states that once automatic renewal is turned off, it cannot be turned on again through that setting. Read the confirmation screen carefully before accepting it, especially if you are canceling close to the 48-hour cutoff.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After confirming, review the account information screen for the renewal status and displayed expiration. Keep that information for your records. The membership should continue to show an end date because the paid term has not been shortened.

Turn off automatic renewal on Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED Model

  1. Open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.
  2. Select the Nintendo Account used to purchase the Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  3. Select the profile picture in the upper-right corner, then open Account Information.
  4. Highlight Nintendo Switch Online in the left-hand navigation.
  5. Select Cancel Your Subscription by Turning Off Automatic Renewal and complete the confirmation screens.

If you do not see the membership in Account Information, stop and verify the account selection. A different profile on the same console may be a family-group member, but it cannot edit the purchaser’s subscription.

Do not confuse the Nintendo Account profile used to launch a game with the account that paid for the membership. Several profiles can use one family plan, but the eShop still assigns billing control to the purchasing account. Switch users can therefore have online access without having permission to alter renewal.

Cancel from a phone or computer

You do not need access to the console. Use a browser and sign in to the purchasing account at accounts.nintendo.com/portal.

  1. Sign in to the Nintendo Account that purchased Nintendo Switch Online.
  2. Select Nintendo Switch Online.
  3. In Active Plan, select Cancel Your Pass by Turning Off Auto-Renewal. The regional label may vary.
  4. Select Confirm and complete any confirmation prompt shown by Nintendo.

Nintendo’s account documentation may also describe this location as Passes > Nintendo Switch Online. On some eShop pages, the equivalent route is Account Information > Your Subscriptions. These are alternate labels for reaching the same subscription controls, not different cancellation products.

If the portal opens a different Nintendo Account automatically, sign out and return with the purchaser’s account. A browser saved password or a family member’s profile can make it easy to edit the wrong account. Check the account name before confirming.

What happens after you turn off renewal

Your current access continues

Automatic renewal being off does not remove Nintendo Switch Online immediately. Nintendo says the membership remains active until the end of its term. You can continue using the benefits covered by that paid period until the displayed expiration date and time.

In practical terms, turning off renewal is different from asking for an immediate cancellation. Your remaining days are not converted into a refund, and there is no need to buy another membership simply to keep access through the date already shown in your account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The next charge is prevented only if you meet the deadline

Nintendo’s current support guidance says the subscription amount may be deducted no sooner than 48 hours before expiration unless automatic renewal has been canceled. For example, if a membership expires at 3 p.m. on Friday, treat 3 p.m. on Wednesday as the latest safe point rather than waiting for the final day. The example illustrates the 48-hour rule; use the exact expiration time shown on your account.

If you are already inside that 48-hour window, make the change immediately, but do not assume it will reverse a charge that Nintendo has already initiated. The support policy does not promise a refund or credit for unused time. A successful change after billing activity has begun cannot be treated as a guaranteed charge reversal.

Unused time is not refunded

Nintendo explicitly says, “Your membership will remain active until the end of its term, and you will not receive any refunds or credits for the remaining time left on your subscription.” Turning off renewal therefore preserves access for the rest of the paid term instead of converting the remaining days into a payment refund.

Automatic renewal stays off

Nintendo says that once auto-renewal is turned off, it cannot be turned on again through that setting. If you later decide to continue, you can start a new paid membership through the available Nintendo purchase process, but the old renewal switch is not a toggle you can immediately reverse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Family memberships and other accounts

Only the purchaser can change renewal

Automatic-renewal settings belong to the Nintendo Account that completed the purchase. Nintendo states that only that account holder can adjust them. A parent, partner, or other family-group member cannot cancel the purchaser’s renewal merely because their account uses the same family membership.

If a child uses the family plan, the child’s profile can continue to receive service while the paid term is active, but it cannot take over billing controls. Ask the purchaser to use one of the three supported routes rather than trying to change the setting from a secondary profile.

Everyone in the family group loses access when the plan ends

For a family membership, turning off renewal leaves all covered accounts active until the paid term ends. When that term expires, Nintendo Switch Online access ends for the other members of the family group as well as for the purchaser. Tell affected members the expiration date so they can move any planned online activity or backups before access ends.

Disabling renewal does not remove people from the family group immediately. The important change occurs at expiration: the membership benefits attached to that family plan stop for every covered account unless another qualifying membership is available.

Save Data Cloud consequences

When Nintendo Switch Online expires, access to Save Data Cloud backup features ends. Save data that is already stored in the console’s internal memory remains usable; ending the membership does not erase those local saves.

Nintendo says a new membership started within 180 days can restore access to the backed-up Save Data Cloud data. The 180-day period is Nintendo’s stated restoration window, not a guarantee that cloud access remains available indefinitely. If a backup is important, do not rely on the cloud as your only copy after the membership expires.

Before the expiration date, check that important games have completed their normal cloud-backup process if you intend to rely on those backups later. Once the membership ends, you should expect the cloud feature itself to be unavailable until a new membership is started; local data in the console remains the immediately usable copy.

Nintendo Switch Online vouchers

Nintendo states that Nintendo Switch Online vouchers require an active paid membership to redeem. Vouchers that have already been redeemed can remain usable if a new paid membership begins before the voucher expires. Turning off automatic renewal does not itself redeem a voucher or extend its expiration date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you possess an unused voucher, check whether your membership is still active before trying to redeem it. A canceled renewal leaves the current term active until its end, but the voucher rule is based on active paid membership status, not on whether automatic renewal is scheduled.

If you cannot find the cancellation option

Check the signed-in account

Return to the eShop profile or the Nintendo Account portal and verify the account name before looking for subscription controls. The purchasing account must be selected on the console or used to sign in on the web. A family-group member’s account can show family access without exposing the purchaser’s renewal controls.

Look for regional wording

Do not search only for one exact sentence. Depending on region, console generation, and software version, look for Cancel Your Subscription by Turning Off Automatic Renewal, Cancel Your Pass by Turning Off Auto-Renewal, or Terminate Automatic Renewal. The setting may appear under Nintendo Switch Online, Active Plan, Passes, or Your Subscriptions.

Confirm that the membership is still the active plan

On the web, open Nintendo Switch Online and inspect Active Plan. On a console, open eShop Account Information and the Nintendo Switch Online section. If the account shows that renewal is already off, do not submit another cancellation; the relevant action has already been applied.

Remember the 48-hour cutoff

The cancellation control is designed to stop a future automatic renewal, not to terminate a paid term immediately. If expiration is less than 48 hours away, act at once and review the confirmation result, but understand that Nintendo’s billing policy allows the charge to be taken no sooner than 48 hours before expiration.

Use the other supported route

If the menu is difficult to locate on a console, use the Nintendo Account portal from a phone or computer. If the browser does not show an active plan, open eShop Account Information on the console associated with the purchaser’s account. Both routes change the same automatic-renewal setting when the correct account is used.

A practical cancellation checklist

  • Find the membership’s expiration date and time in eShop Account Information or the Nintendo Account portal.
  • Calculate a deadline at least 48 hours before that expiration.
  • Identify the Nintendo Account that originally purchased the membership.
  • Choose eShop on the relevant console or the Nintendo Account portal on a phone or computer.
  • Open the Nintendo Switch Online subscription controls.
  • Select the option that says cancellation is performed by turning off automatic renewal.
  • Complete the confirmation prompt and retain the resulting status information.
  • Continue using the membership through the paid term, knowing that unused time is not refundable.
  • If the plan is a family membership, notify the other family-group members of the expiration.
  • If cloud backups matter, remember the 180-day window Nintendo gives for restoring access after a new membership starts.
  • Check any unused Nintendo Switch Online voucher before the membership expires; an active paid membership is required for redemption.

How the three methods differ

The outcome is the same on every supported route: automatic renewal is disabled for the purchasing account, while the current paid term continues. The practical difference is where you authenticate and which menu label you see.

Question Switch 2 Switch, Lite, or OLED Phone or computer
Starting point HOME Menu > Nintendo eShop HOME Menu > Nintendo eShop Nintendo Account portal

Cancellation label Cancel Your Subscription by Turning Off Automatic Renewal Cancel Your Subscription by Turning Off Automatic Renewal Cancel Your Pass by Turning Off Auto-Renewal

Regional and software-version differences can change the wording, so use the menu’s meaning rather than expecting an identical sentence on every device.

Questions readers commonly ask

Is turning off auto-renew the same as deleting Nintendo Switch Online?

No. It stops the next automatic renewal while leaving the current paid membership active until its expiration. Your Nintendo Account and local save data remain in place.

Can I cancel from my phone without the Switch?

Yes. Sign in to the purchasing Nintendo Account at accounts.nintendo.com/portal, open Nintendo Switch Online, choose the active plan, and select the option to cancel by turning off auto-renewal.

Why can’t another family member cancel it?

Nintendo assigns renewal control to the Nintendo Account that purchased the membership. Family-group access does not give other accounts authority to change that billing setting.

Will I lose online access immediately?

No. Access continues through the end of the already-paid term. The loss occurs when that term expires, unless another membership covers the account.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Nintendo refund the days I do not use?

No. Nintendo says it provides no refund or credit for remaining time when automatic renewal is turned off.

What happens to a family plan?

All covered family-group members keep access until the paid term ends. At expiration, Nintendo Switch Online access ends for the purchaser and the other members of that family group.

What happens to Save Data Cloud backups?

Cloud-backup access ends with the membership, while saves stored in the console’s memory remain usable. Nintendo says starting a new membership within 180 days can restore access to the backed-up data.

Can I redeem an unused Nintendo Switch Online voucher after renewal is off?

Nintendo says an active paid membership is required to redeem a voucher. A voucher already redeemed can remain usable if a new paid membership starts before that voucher expires.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I am inside the 48-hour window?

Turn off renewal immediately and verify the confirmation status. Nintendo permits the subscription amount to be deducted no sooner than 48 hours before expiration, so a late change is not a guaranteed reversal of billing already initiated.

Key points to remember

To stop Nintendo Switch Online from charging again, disable automatic renewal from the purchasing Nintendo Account at least 48 hours before expiration. Use Nintendo eShop on Switch 2 or another Switch-family console, or use the Nintendo Account web portal from a phone or computer. Your paid access continues until the term ends, Nintendo does not refund the unused portion, and a family-plan expiration affects every member. Save Data Cloud access ends with the membership, although Nintendo provides a 180-day window in which a new membership can restore access to those backups.
