To cancel Netflix, open Manage your membership, select Cancel, and then choose Finish Cancellation. Netflix sends a confirmation email. Signing out, deleting the Netflix app, or removing it from a device does not cancel the subscription.
Your account normally stays usable until the end of the current billing period. Netflix says it keeps viewing activity, recommendations, ratings, account details, gameplay history, and game saves for 24 months after the account closes, so you can restart the same account during that window. If you want your own copy of the information, request it before cancelling; a verified request can take up to 30 days.

Cancel Netflix while preserving the account
Use a web browser or the account settings area rather than relying on the mobile or TV app. The cancellation is complete only after the final confirmation step.

- Open Manage your membership.
- Select Cancel.
- Choose Finish Cancellation and follow any on-screen prompts.
- Look for Netflix’s cancellation confirmation email and keep it for your records.
If time remains in the paid billing period, Netflix normally continues to work until the account closes at the end of that period. After cancellation, charges stop unless somebody restarts the account. The exact date is shown in the account’s billing information; note it before you leave the settings page.

What does not cancel a subscription
- Signing out of Netflix.
- Deleting the Netflix app from a phone, tablet, smart TV, streaming box, or game console.
- Removing a device from the account.
- Stopping playback or simply allowing a payment card to expire.
Those actions change access on a device or create a payment problem, but they are not the cancellation workflow.
Check these details before you click Cancel
A short pre-cancellation check prevents the most common surprises and gives you a record of what should happen next.
- Identify the payer. In the account area, determine whether Netflix itself bills you or whether a mobile carrier, internet provider, app store, or another payment partner controls the subscription.
- Record the billing end date. Open Payment History and note the next billing date or the date through which your current payment gives access.
- Decide whether you need a personal data copy. The download request is separate from cancellation and can take up to 30 days after Netflix verifies it.
- Consider account security. If another person knows the password, plan to change it and sign out of all devices after cancelling so the account cannot be restarted without your approval.
- Check whether a pause is available. Netflix documents pausing as a separate option for eligible plans and payment methods. A pause may fit a temporary break better than closing the account.
Request your Netflix data before cancellation
The account owner can request a copy of Netflix information at https://www.netflix.com/account/getmyinfo. Make the request while you can still sign in and verify ownership.

What the data request covers
Netflix describes the copy as including account-owner information, plan selection, notification and privacy settings, payment and billing information, profiles, viewing activity, ratings, and device-access information from the last 90 days. The list is an account-data export, not a way to download Netflix video for offline viewing.
How long the request takes
Netflix says a verified request may take up to 30 days. That is a maximum stated in the current guidance, not a guarantee that every request will arrive on the same day. Submit it before cancelling if you need the information for personal records, a privacy request, or a future account migration.
Practical sequence for the export
- Open the data-request page while signed in as the account owner.
- Submit the request and complete any verification Netflix asks for.
- Save the confirmation message and record the request date.
- Keep the eventual file in a secure location because it can contain billing, profile, viewing, rating, and device information.
- Continue with the normal cancellation steps after you have submitted the request; you do not need to wait 30 days to cancel.
Requesting a copy does not keep the subscription active, extend the billing period, or guarantee that Netflix will retain every record indefinitely.

What Netflix keeps after the account closes
Netflix’s current Help Center cancellation guidance says it keeps certain account information for 24 months after the account closes, making it available if you restart within that period. The retention applies to the categories below.

The game-save limitation
For games without cloud saves, Netflix’s guidance qualifies the 24-month statement: the game and its data must remain installed on the device. If you uninstall such a game, replace the device, clear its storage, or otherwise remove local data, the account-retention period alone cannot restore that local save.
What 24 months does and does not mean
The 24-month period is a restart window for the categories Netflix identifies. It is not a promise that every record is preserved forever, that every item from a data export will remain available, or that information is erased immediately when the account closes.
Netflix’s retention information says it retains personal information as required or permitted by applicable laws and regulations, to honor choices, for billing or records purposes, and as otherwise necessary for the purposes described in its Privacy Statement. Retention and deletion outcomes can therefore vary by jurisdiction and by the type of information involved.
How to restart the same account later
If you restart within the 24-month period, use the original account credentials and follow Netflix’s restart or reactivation prompts. Using the same account is important: opening a completely new account does not provide a way to merge the old account’s retained recommendations, ratings, or viewing activity into it.
- Go to Netflix and sign in with the email address and password used before cancellation.
- Review the displayed plan and payment details.
- Confirm the restart only if you want billing to begin again.
- Check your profiles, My List, recommendations, ratings, and viewing activity after access returns.
- For games with local-only saves, verify that the original game and its data are still installed on the original device.
A restart begins a new paid period according to the plan and payment method shown at that time. The retained-data policy does not freeze your old price, plan, catalogue, or other commercial terms.

When Netflix does not show a Cancel button
If Manage your membership has no cancellation option, Netflix says the subscription may be billed by a payment partner. In that situation, Netflix cannot complete the cancellation from its own account page.
Find the controlling payment partner
Review the billing information in your Netflix account and recent payment receipts. The company or service appearing as the merchant may be the party that controls renewal. Examples can include a carrier, internet provider, app-store account, or bundle operator, but the exact options depend on your country and agreement.
Cancel through that partner
Use the partner’s subscription-management process and obtain its cancellation confirmation. Deleting Netflix from a device will not replace that step. After the partner confirms cancellation, sign in to Netflix and check the membership page or billing history for the resulting end date.

If you cannot identify the payer
- Search your email for the latest Netflix or partner billing receipt.
- Check bank or card statements for the recurring merchant name.
- Review subscriptions associated with the mobile or app-store account used to start Netflix.
- Contact the payment partner shown on the receipt before disputing a charge.
Keep both the partner’s confirmation and Netflix’s subsequent account notice. They establish which service stopped the renewal and when access should end.
Cancellation timing, charges, and access
Cancellation stops future renewal; it does not normally cut off a period that has already been paid for. If you cancel partway through a billing cycle, you can generally continue streaming until the account closes at that cycle’s end. The account’s Payment History provides the date to use when planning the change.
What to expect after the end date
- Streaming access ends when the paid period or partner-controlled period ends.
- Netflix should stop charging for that membership unless the account is restarted.
- The account can remain restartable, with the categories of information Netflix says it retains for 24 months.
- A cancellation email should document the action; keep it with your billing records.
Do not assume that a failed payment equals a clean cancellation. A payment failure can leave an account in a billing or recovery state, while an explicit cancellation gives you a recorded end date.

Protect the account after cancelling
Cancellation and account security are separate tasks. If your goal is to prevent a former household member, roommate, or ex-partner from restarting the membership, secure the login after cancellation.

- Choose Sign out of all devices in the account security settings.
- Review the devices and recent access information for anything unfamiliar.
- Secure the email account used for Netflix, because control of that mailbox can enable a password reset.
- Store the cancellation confirmation and data-request confirmation privately.
Netflix recommends changing the password and signing out of all devices when preventing unwanted access or a restart matters. These actions do not erase retained account information or shorten the 24-month restart window.

Cancellation is not the only choice. Pick the option that matches the reason you are leaving.

Pausing is not universal, and linking to a package is not the same as deleting and recreating an account. Check the eligibility and instructions displayed for your country, plan, and payment method before changing anything.
Troubleshooting common cancellation problems
The app has no cancellation setting
Use a browser and open the account’s membership-management page. Apps and TV interfaces may not expose every billing control. If the browser page still lacks a cancellation option, investigate whether a payment partner bills the account.

First compare the charge date with the cancellation confirmation and the billing end date. A charge that was initiated before cancellation may belong to the already-started period. If the charge is after the confirmed end date, check for a second Netflix account, a partner subscription, or an account that was restarted with the same credentials. Contact the billing party shown on the receipt with your confirmation details.

You cannot sign in to request data
Recover access through the email address or phone number associated with the account before attempting cancellation. If a partner controls billing, retain that partner’s receipts while you resolve the login issue. The data-copy page is intended for the account owner and requires verification.
Your profiles or recommendations are missing after a restart
Confirm that you restarted the original account rather than creating a new one. Check the email address, profiles, and membership history. The 24-month statement covers the categories Netflix names, not an unconditional promise that every setting or item from every device will reappear.
A game save did not return
Determine whether the game used cloud saves. For a game without cloud saves, the original game and its local data must still be installed on the device; an account restart cannot recreate deleted local storage.
Country, privacy, and policy limits
Netflix Help Center pages are country-sensitive and direct readers to select a country. Cancellation screens, partner billing arrangements, pause eligibility, retention practices, and available privacy controls can therefore differ by jurisdiction and payment method.
The figures in this guide reflect Netflix’s current guidance retrieved on October 19, 2026: a 24-month retention window for the specified restart data and up to 30 days for a verified personal-data copy request. Treat those as the current published guidance, not a universal promise that applies identically to every country, account type, or category of information.
If you need deletion for a legal, regulatory, employment, or safety reason, use the privacy choices and contact routes available for your country rather than assuming that cancellation itself is an erasure request. Netflix may retain information when laws, billing records, fraud prevention, or other stated purposes require or permit it.
