If a Nintendo Switch game’s release date moved, check the revised date shown in Nintendo eShop or your Nintendo Account. Nintendo’s standard digital-preorder cancellation window remains open only before payment is processed and the game is preloaded, generally up to seven days before the current release date. On the Switch, open Nintendo eShop, go to your user icon and Your Pre-Orders, then choose Cancel. You can use the equivalent Purchase History path in a browser.
If the Cancel control is missing, Nintendo’s published instruction is to contact Nintendo Support. The cited U.S. guidance provides an escalation route, not a promise of an automatic refund just because a release was delayed.

The date and status that control cancellation
A delay does not create a separate, unlimited cancellation period in Nintendo’s U.S. eShop instructions. The practical test is the transaction’s current status and the game’s revised release date.

- When a publisher changes the release date, the seven-day point can move as well. Use the date and preorder status displayed in your Nintendo Account or eShop rather than relying on the original announcement date.

The table describes the operational rule in Nintendo’s published U.S. material. It does not establish a guaranteed outcome for an individual refund request.
Check these details before you cancel
Have the following information ready before opening the cancellation screen. It helps you identify the correct transaction and gives Support the facts it will ask for if the control is unavailable.
- The Nintendo Account that placed the preorder. A different user profile or family member’s account will not show the same preorder list.
- The game’s title and the release date currently displayed in the account.
- The original release date and the revised date announced by the publisher, if you have both.
- Whether your payment method has already been charged.
- Whether the game has started preloading on the console.
- Which country or Nintendo Account region applies to the purchase.
Do not start by deleting the game icon, removing the user profile, or changing the console’s region. Those actions do not substitute for canceling the transaction and can make it harder to identify the account that owns the preorder.
Cancel the preorder on a Nintendo Switch
Use the console workflow when you have access to the Switch user profile that placed the order.

- Open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.
- Select the user who placed the preorder. If several users are on the console, choose the exact account used for the purchase.
- Select the user icon in the upper-right corner to open Account Information.
- Scroll to Your Pre-Orders. The delayed game should appear in this list if the account still has an active preorder.
- Select Cancel beside the game.
- If identity authentication is enabled, enter the requested password or PIN.
These labels and steps are from Nintendo’s cancellation instructions at Nintendo Support: How to cancel a preorder. After confirming, return to Your Pre-Orders and verify that the title is no longer listed as an active preorder. Keep any confirmation screen or email until you have checked that the transaction status changed.
If the revised date is not shown yet
A publisher may announce a delay before the new date is reflected in every account view. In that situation, do not calculate the cutoff from a social-media post or an old store listing. Check the release date displayed in Your Pre-Orders and in the game’s eShop page. If the account still shows an old date and the cancellation control is absent, contact Support and describe both dates.
Cancel from a web browser
The browser method is useful when the console is unavailable or when you want to inspect the account’s purchase history on a larger screen.

- Select Purchase History.
- In the Pre-orders section, select View pre-orders.
- Select Cancel beside the delayed game.
Nintendo documents this route alongside the console instructions at its preorder-cancellation support page. If the game appears on the Switch but not in the browser, or vice versa, confirm that both sessions use the same Nintendo Account and region before escalating.

Why the Cancel button may be missing
The button is normally tied to the payment and preload state, not simply to the fact that a release was postponed. Common explanations include:
- The seven-day point has arrived. Nintendo can begin charging no sooner than seven days before release, and the self-service period may have closed.
- Payment was processed. Once the charge is taken, the account may no longer offer ordinary preorder cancellation.
- Preloading began. Nintendo’s FAQ makes cancellation conditional on the game not having been preloaded.
- You are viewing another account. The preorder belongs to the account that made the purchase, not automatically to every user on the console.
- The release-date update is still propagating. An account can temporarily show information that does not match a newly announced date.
- The item is not an eShop preorder. A physical Nintendo Store pre-purchase follows a different process.
Nintendo’s direct instruction is: “If you are unable to cancel the pre-order, please contact us for assistance.” Use Nintendo Support rather than repeatedly trying to remove the software or dispute a charge with your bank.
Information to give Nintendo Support
State that the game’s release date changed and provide a concise timeline. Include:
- the Nintendo Account email or other identifying information requested through the official support channel;
- the game title;
- the original release date and revised release date;
- the date and amount of any charge;
- whether the console has preloaded any part of the game;
- screenshots of the preorder page showing the current status, if available.
Ask Support to explain the transaction’s current status and whether cancellation or a refund is available under the rules for your account region. The published U.S. article does not say that every delay produces an automatic refund, so avoid presenting that as an entitlement.

What a delay means for your money
The answer depends on whether Nintendo has taken payment and whether preloading has started. A delayed release by itself does not answer either question.

If you canceled before a charge was processed, monitor the purchase history and payment account for the status change. If you were already charged, keep the receipt and Support case number; do not assume that removing the game from the HOME Menu reverses the transaction.

This procedure is for a digital preorder made through Nintendo Switch eShop. Nintendo describes physical Nintendo Store pre-purchases differently: they are charged immediately and require contacting Support to cancel. The distinction matters because the eShop’s no-sooner-than-seven-days charging schedule does not apply to a physical order.

Nintendo’s overview of these purchase types is at Nintendo Support’s eShop pre-order information. A retail cartridge bought from another seller is a separate retailer transaction and is not canceled through Nintendo eShop.
U.S. operational guidance versus UK consumer rights
The seven-day workflow and Support links above come from Nintendo’s U.S. support pages. Consumer-law rights can differ by country, so do not apply the U.S. operational wording as a universal legal rule.
Nintendo’s UK documentation describes a voluntary right to cancel a software preorder up to seven days before release. It also discusses a statutory 14-day cancellation right for digital content that can end earlier when performance starts after the customer gives express consent and acknowledges the loss of that right. Read the UK explanations at Nintendo UK’s voluntary preorder-cancellation page and Nintendo UK’s preorder and preload FAQ.
Those pages are UK-specific. If your Nintendo Account is registered elsewhere, check the consumer rules and Nintendo terms that apply in that jurisdiction, then use the local Support channel. A legal right and Nintendo’s self-service button are related but not identical: the button may disappear even when you need to ask Support to assess your circumstances.

A practical decision path after a delay
- Confirm the transaction type. Make sure it is a digital eShop preorder, not a physical Nintendo Store order or a purchase from another retailer.
- Sign in to the purchasing account. Check both Your Pre-Orders on the Switch and Purchase History at accounts.nintendo.com if necessary.
- Record the current release date and status. Note whether the account says payment was processed or preloading began.
- Cancel while eligible. Use the on-screen Cancel control and complete any password or PIN prompt.
- Verify the result. Reopen the preorder list and retain the confirmation or receipt.
- Escalate when the control is absent. Contact Nintendo Support with the original and revised dates, account details, charge status and preload status.
This sequence prevents the most common mistake: waiting for the new launch date without checking when the seven-day payment and cancellation boundary now falls.
Questions to avoid when contacting Support
Support can assess a specific transaction; a general statement that “the game was delayed” leaves out the facts that determine the available remedy. Avoid sending passwords, full payment-card numbers or other sensitive information outside Nintendo’s authenticated support process. Provide only the account and transaction information the official form requests.
Describe the issue in one sentence, for example: the game was originally scheduled for one date, now shows another date, the account has or has not been charged, and the software has or has not been preloaded. Then ask whether Nintendo can cancel the preorder or process a refund under the rules for your region. This wording requests a decision without assuming that a delay guarantees one.
Bottom line for a delayed eShop preorder
Check the revised release date and act before payment is processed and preloading begins, generally no later than seven days before release. Cancel through Nintendo eShop → user icon → Account Information → Your Pre-Orders, or through Nintendo Account → Purchase History → View pre-orders. If the button is missing, use Nintendo Support and provide the complete timeline. The cited U.S. guidance does not promise an automatic refund solely because the game was delayed.
