How to Calibrate an Altimeter Watch for Accurate Elevation Readings

Calibrate an altimeter watch at a known elevation or outdoors with a reliable GPS fix, then account for weather, pressure, sensor contamination and model-specific automatic behavior.

For the most dependable elevation reading, calibrate your watch at a location with a known elevation, or use its GPS calibration outdoors after it obtains a good satellite fix. Then keep in mind that a barometric altimeter measures air pressure, not height directly: weather, indoor pressure changes, wind, water, dirt and weak GPS can all make the number drift. Menu names and automatic behavior differ by model, so use the exact owner’s manual for your watch.

What an altimeter watch is actually measuring

A barometric altimeter contains a pressure sensor. It estimates elevation from the relationship between air pressure and height above sea level. Because atmospheric pressure changes for reasons unrelated to climbing or descending, the watch needs a reference point. Calibration tells the watch what elevation corresponds to the pressure it is sensing at that moment.

A known elevation is usually the strongest manual reference. Examples include a clearly marked trailhead, a surveyed benchmark, a sign at a mountain hut, or a building whose elevation is published by a reliable local authority. A reference from several kilometres away may be unsuitable if pressure or weather differs between the two locations.

GPS can provide an automatic reference, but satellite positioning is affected by the view of the sky, terrain, buildings, foliage and current signal conditions. Some watches also combine barometric pressure with GPS or a digital elevation model (DEM). That fusion can reduce drift in some situations, but it does not make the displayed elevation infallible.

Prepare before opening the calibration menu

  • Identify the exact model and generation. Features and menu paths can change between models and firmware versions. Download or open the owner’s manual for the watch on your wrist.
  • Choose a trustworthy reference. Use the elevation of the watch’s current location, not the destination you plan to reach. If the source gives metres and the watch is set to feet, convert or change units before confirming.
  • Decide whether conditions suit GPS. For a GPS calibration, go outside with a broad view of the sky. A courtyard, vehicle, dense forest or narrow canyon can produce a poor fix.
  • Keep the watch still while calibrating. Place it on your wrist or hold it at the reference point until the watch confirms completion. Avoid calibrating while moving through changing pressure zones.
  • Inspect the pressure sensor. Sweat, dust, salt or chlorinated-water residue can obstruct the pressure port. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning directions; never push a pin or other object into the opening.

General calibration procedure

  1. Open the watch’s altimeter or elevation settings. The control may be called Altimeter, Elevation, Alti & baro, Sensors, or Calibration. Do not assume a path from another brand applies to yours.
  2. Select a reference method. Choose a manual or known-elevation option when you have a reliable current elevation. Choose GPS only after moving outdoors and obtaining a suitable fix. If the watch offers an automatic, DEM or fused option, read the description so you understand what data it uses.
  3. Enter the elevation or confirm the automatic fix. Type the value with the correct unit and check the digits before saving. For GPS, wait for the watch to indicate that positioning is ready rather than accepting an initial, uncertain estimate.
  4. Save and return to the elevation screen. The displayed value should be close to the reference you entered or accepted. A small difference can reflect the precision of the source and current sensor conditions.
  5. Recheck at a second known point. At a marked summit, trail junction or other documented elevation, compare the watch without changing the reference unnecessarily. This reveals whether the original setting was wrong or whether the sensor is drifting.
  6. Recalibrate when conditions change materially. A major weather front, a long move between pressure systems, or a cleaned sensor can justify a new reference. Repeating calibration every few minutes during a normal outing is not useful and can hide genuine ascent and descent.

Documented procedures for common models

Garmin epix (Gen 2)

On the epix (Gen 2), hold MENU, then select Sensors & Accessories > Altimeter. Choose Auto Cal. to calibrate from the GPS starting point. The manual also provides Calibrate, followed by Enter Manually, Use DEM or Use GPS. These instructions apply to the epix (Gen 2) Standard/Pro Series Owner’s Manual, version 12, August 2025: Garmin’s calibration instructions.

Garmin states in that manual: “Your watch was already calibrated at the factory, and the watch uses automatic calibration at your GPS starting point by default.” Factory calibration does not remove the need to check the reference after transport, weather changes or a questionable GPS fix. Owners of other Garmin models should use that model’s manual rather than assuming the epix path is identical.

COROS watches

From the main watch face, open System > Sensors > Calibration > Elevation. Select Use GPS or Enter Elevation. COROS recommends standing in an open field for GPS calibration and entering the exact elevation before an activity when possible. Its help article also recommends regular manual recalibration, even though outdoor workouts can recalibrate elevation from GPS: COROS guidance for fixing inaccurate elevation readings.

The recommended open-field step matters because an obstructed satellite view can make a GPS-derived reference worse than a reliable sign or map value. If you cannot get a clean fix, use the known-elevation route instead of accepting a visibly unstable GPS estimate.

Suunto Vertical

On Suunto Vertical, define an altitude reference under Settings > Alti & baro. The reference can be a known current elevation or the automatic FusedAlti function. The Suunto Vertical User Guide describes FusedAlti as a combination of GPS and barometric altitude. It is used by default during GPS exercises and navigation; when GPS is off, the watch relies on its barometric sensor.

FusedAlti is a model-specific behavior, not a universal setting. A different Suunto model may expose different controls, so confirm the wording and defaults in its own guide.

Manual, GPS, DEM and automatic calibration compared

Reference method What it uses Best use Main limitation
Known elevation / manual A value for the watch’s current location entered by you A marked point, surveyed elevation or other dependable local reference The result is only as good as the source, unit conversion and location match
GPS Satellite-derived position and elevation Outdoor calibration where the sky view is open and the watch reports a stable fix Buildings, trees, terrain and weak signals can produce a poor reference
DEM A digital elevation model associated with the position Supported devices that offer a map-based automatic estimate Model resolution and map data can differ from the exact ground elevation
Automatic or fused Device-specific combinations of GPS, pressure and/or elevation-model data Users who want the watch to update its reference during supported activities Algorithms and defaults vary; the result is not a guaranteed accuracy standard

Use the method that has the strongest evidence at your location. A clearly known elevation generally beats an obstructed GPS estimate. Conversely, when no dependable reference is available, an open-sky GPS or documented fused method is more defensible than guessing a value.

Why a calibrated reading can still drift

Weather and natural pressure changes

Falling or rising barometric pressure can look like a descent or ascent even when you remain at the same elevation. A storm front, daily pressure cycle or rapid change in weather can therefore move the displayed number after a correct calibration. Recalibrating at a known point separates atmospheric drift from actual movement.

Indoor and pressurized environments

Heating, air conditioning, aircraft cabins, vehicles and other pressurized spaces alter the pressure around the sensor. A watch moved from an air-conditioned building to outdoors may briefly show an implausible change. Let it acclimatize outside before judging its performance.

Wind, water and contamination

Strong wind can affect pressure at the port. Submersion, sweat, salt, chlorinated water and dust can leave sediment or a film that restricts the sensor. COROS specifically lists natural daily pressure variation, weather, pressurized environments, heaters and air conditioners, submersion, strong wind, and dirt as factors that can affect elevation readings. Its maintenance advice is documented in the COROS troubleshooting article. Rinse and clean only as the watch maker specifies, and do not insert tools into the pressure opening.

GPS signal quality

GPS elevation is not equally reliable in every setting. COROS says a strong satellite signal may produce readings accurate within a few metres, while a weak signal can result in errors of tens of metres. Those ranges are COROS’s statements about its device context, not a cross-brand specification or a promise for every location. Treat a fix under heavy obstruction cautiously.

How often watches update elevation

Update frequency affects how quickly a display reacts; it is not the same as accuracy. COROS reports the following behavior in its help documentation:

Situation Reported update interval
Barometer during COROS workouts Every 1–2 seconds
GPS elevation recalibration during COROS workouts Once every 30 minutes
Barometer during daily use Once a minute
COROS elevation widget Every 10 minutes

These are vendor-reported system details from February 2025, not independent laboratory measurements. A watch can sample frequently and still display a biased value if the pressure reference is wrong or the sensor is obstructed. Read the full explanation in How COROS devices measure elevation.

Troubleshooting an incorrect or unstable elevation

The value is wrong immediately after calibration

  • Confirm that the entered elevation belongs to the watch’s current location and uses the selected unit.
  • Check whether you accidentally selected a destination, map point or nearby feature at a different height.
  • If you used GPS, move to an open area and repeat the process after the watch reports a stable fix.

The value changes while you are standing still

  • Compare the timing with a weather change, strong wind, air-conditioning or heating.
  • Move out of a vehicle, building or other pressurized space and allow the sensor to equalize.
  • Inspect and clean the pressure port according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

The reading is consistently offset after cleaning and recalibration

  • Test at a second, independently known elevation. This rules out an incorrect first reference.
  • Use the exact model guide to check whether automatic calibration, DEM data or a fused mode is overriding your manual setting.
  • Record the conditions and the size of the offset. If the error persists at multiple known points, contact the manufacturer rather than trying to unblock the sensor with an object or an unapproved solvent.

GPS calibration repeatedly fails

  • Go outdoors with a clear view of the sky; avoid narrow streets, dense canopy and steep walls.
  • Wait longer for a fix and keep the watch still during confirmation.
  • Use a known-elevation reference when one is available. GPS is an option, not a requirement for every watch.

How much accuracy should you expect?

There is no universal accuracy tolerance for altimeter watches. The official materials cited here do not provide a controlled, cross-brand comparison or a single number that applies to every model, terrain and weather condition. A displayed elevation should therefore be treated as an estimate whose quality depends on the reference, pressure stability, sensor condition and (when used) satellite geometry.

For route planning, ascent totals and safety decisions, use the watch alongside marked elevations, topographic information and local conditions. Do not infer that two different watches are equally accurate merely because their screens show similar numbers at one moment, and do not treat a vendor’s signal-dependent range as a guarantee for another brand.

Maintenance habits that protect the sensor

  • Rinse or clean the watch after saltwater, chlorinated water, heavy sweating or dusty activities using only the procedure approved for that model.
  • Keep the pressure opening free of mud, sunscreen residue and fabric fibres.
  • Do not probe the port, blow compressed air into it or apply household cleaners unless the manufacturer explicitly permits that method.
  • Calibrate at a known point before a critical activity when the watch has travelled, experienced a major weather change or shown unexplained drift.
  • Save the model’s manual and note its automatic-calibration defaults so you know whether a GPS or fused routine may replace your manual reference.

A practical pre-activity checklist

  1. Identify the exact watch model and open its current owner’s manual.
  2. Choose a current-location elevation from a trustworthy sign, map or other documented source.
  3. Inspect the sensor and clean it using the approved method if necessary.
  4. At an open outdoor point, enter the known elevation or wait for a good GPS fix.
  5. Confirm the displayed value and units before starting the activity.
  6. At a later known point, compare the reading and note any weather or pressure changes before recalibrating.

Calibrating an altimeter watch is therefore a reference-management task, not a one-time promise of perfect height. Start with the best local elevation you can establish, use GPS or sensor-fusion options only under conditions suited to them, and investigate pressure, environment and sensor cleanliness when the number drifts.
