SpaceX should be compared with public aerospace and defense stocks as a mixed space, connectivity and AI business—not as a single-purpose defense contractor. The useful test is whether growth, margins, backlog quality, capital needs, customer concentration and execution risk justify its market value relative to each peer’s own mix.
Its June 2026 IPO created a public-market reference point, but one offer price or a broad sector multiple cannot answer that question. The framework below separates disclosed facts from the analysis investors must perform with current filings.

SpaceX is publicly traded, but the IPO price is not today’s valuation
SpaceX’s registration statement for Class A common stock became effective on June 11, 2026. The company priced its initial public offering at $135 per Class A share, and a later issuer notice identifies the Nasdaq ticker as SPCX. Those are dated transaction facts. The $135 figure is the IPO offer price, not a current quotation, market capitalization or fair value.

The practical answer to the question “Is SpaceX stock publicly traded?” is therefore yes. The more important investor question is whether its financial profile is comparable to the specific aerospace or defense company selected as a peer.
Why a simple aerospace-stock comparison breaks down
Traditional aerospace and defense companies often center on aircraft, engines, defense systems or long-term government services. SpaceX combines several activities, including launch and space operations, connectivity and AI-related activity. A diversified defense contractor, a launch provider and a satellite-connectivity operator can all be described as aerospace businesses while having very different revenue recognition, capital requirements and risk.
Use a peer only when there is a clear reason for the comparison. A company with launch exposure may help assess propulsion, launch cadence and space infrastructure. A defense prime may illuminate government-contract economics and program execution. A satellite operator may be useful for connectivity economics. An aircraft or engine manufacturer may provide a mature industrial benchmark, but it may be a poor direct valuation match for a fast-growing, loss-making space company.

The SpaceX facts that should anchor the comparison
| Disclosure | Period or date | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| $135 per Class A share | June 2026 IPO offer price | A historical offering price, not a current quote or valuation conclusion. |
| $4.937 billion net loss | Full year 2025 | SpaceX was loss-making on a consolidated net-income basis for that year. |
| $4.276 billion net loss | First quarter 2026, unaudited | A period-specific quarterly loss; do not annualize it without understanding seasonality and launch timing. |
| $47.461 billion backlog | June 30, 2026 | Contracted transaction price for enforceable customer performance obligations that had not yet been completed, not recognized revenue or guaranteed profit. |
These figures come from SpaceX’s June 2026 prospectus and related issuer disclosures. They should be paired with the latest filings before making an investment decision because the price, results, backlog and share count can change.
Compare business mix before comparing multiples
Separate the operating activities
Build a segment map for SpaceX and every proposed peer. Identify launch and space operations, connectivity, AI-related activity, commercial sales and government exposure wherever the filings provide that detail. Then ask how much of each company’s economics comes from recurring services, one-time hardware, launches, development contracts or usage-based revenue.
A company with recurring connectivity subscriptions may deserve a different growth and margin analysis from one whose revenue depends on a sequence of launches. A government-services contractor may have long-duration contracts but different renewal, appropriations and customer-concentration risks. SpaceX’s broad mix means its consolidated growth rate can conceal acceleration in one activity and weakness in another.

Match the end markets
Classify customers as commercial, civil-government, defense-government or other institutional buyers. Government exposure can provide visibility, but contract changes, appropriations, protests, security requirements and milestone delays can affect timing and profitability. Commercial demand can grow faster but may be more sensitive to competition, pricing and customer budgets.
Use a peer bucket, not a single benchmark
| Peer bucket | What it can illuminate | Where the comparison can fail |
|---|---|---|
| Launch and space-infrastructure companies | Launch cadence, vehicle development, mission reliability, licensing and space-system investment. | Different launch frequencies, payload mixes, contract structures and stages of development can make margins incomparable. |
| Satellite and connectivity operators | Subscriber or capacity economics, network investment, recurring service revenue and deployment schedules. | SpaceX’s launch and AI-related activities may have no equivalent in the peer’s accounts. |
| Diversified defense contractors | Government-contract discipline, backlog reporting, program execution, cash conversion and shareholder governance. | Defense programs may be more mature and less exposed to launch timing or consumer connectivity demand. |
| Aircraft and engine manufacturers | Industrial scale, supply-chain management, certification and aftermarket economics. | Commercial aviation cycles and aftermarket revenue are not direct substitutes for launch or connectivity economics. |
Use several buckets when necessary, but label the purpose of each comparison. A peer is not “comparable” simply because a database places both companies in an aerospace category.
Growth and profitability: revenue scale is not enough
Place revenue growth beside operating income, net income and cash generation for identical reporting periods. SpaceX’s reported net losses—$4.937 billion in 2025 and $4.276 billion in the first quarter of 2026—mean that revenue scale alone does not establish profitability or a sustainable business model.
For each company, collect:
- Revenue and year-over-year growth for the same period.
- Gross margin and operating margin, with unusual items identified.
- Net income and whether it includes non-cash gains, losses or one-time charges.
- Operating cash flow and free cash flow, including the company’s definition.
- Research, development and capital expenditures required to support stated plans.
- Any guidance, targets or stated conditions for reaching profitability.
Losses have different meanings. A business may be funding a defined expansion with a credible path to positive cash flow, or it may require continuing external financing without clear unit economics. The filings, not the size of the addressable market, must answer which situation applies.

SpaceX states that revenue and costs for most customer payloads are recognized at launch or deployment. Customer readiness, weather and operations can move a launch between reporting periods. A quarter with fewer launches may therefore show lower recognized revenue even when contracted work remains in backlog, while a later quarter may show a temporary jump.
Compare several quarters and explain the operational reason for any large change. For peers, check whether revenue is recognized on delivery, over time, at a milestone or under a cost-to-cost measure. A reported quarterly growth rate is only comparable after those policies and timing effects are understood.
Backlog quality matters more than the headline total
SpaceX defines backlog as the transaction price for enforceable customer performance obligations for which work remains. It reported $47.461 billion of backlog as of June 30, 2026. The company expected approximately 56% to be recognized within one year, 34% in one to three years and 10% thereafter.

That schedule describes expected revenue recognition, not cash received, profit earned or an unconditional guarantee that every dollar will be collected. Work can be delayed, modified or affected by customer readiness and operational events. Backlog is useful evidence of contracted demand, but it must be tested for quality and conversion.

- Does the definition include only enforceable obligations, or also options, framework agreements and announced awards?
- Are cancellation rights, termination clauses or unpriced options disclosed?
- How much is expected to convert within one year, and how does that compare with the company’s annual revenue?
- Is backlog concentrated among a few customers, programs or government agencies?
- What execution milestones must be met before revenue can be recognized?
- How often has the company historically converted backlog into revenue and cash?
Never rank companies by backlog total without reconciling definitions. A smaller backlog composed of firm, near-term obligations can be economically stronger than a larger figure containing options or distant development work.
Customer concentration can change the risk profile
SpaceX’s June 2026 filing reports two customers that each represented more than 10% of consolidated revenue for the cited period. The filing explains that one customer relates to all three segments and another relates to the AI segment. The cited passage anonymizes those customers; their identities should not be guessed.
Concentration affects both revenue stability and bargaining power. Losing, delaying or repricing a major customer can have an outsized effect on results. Concentration also interacts with backlog: a large backlog may still depend on a small number of counterparties.
For each peer, calculate the disclosed share of revenue from customers above the reporting threshold, identify whether those customers are commercial or governmental, and examine contract duration and renewal terms. If a company does not disclose a precise percentage, record that limitation rather than estimating it.
Capital needs and financing are central to the comparison
SpaceX warns that it may not sustain profitability and expects additional operating expense and capital expenditure as it invests for growth. The June 2026 materials also announce an offering of senior unsecured notes. The amount, terms and later balance-sheet changes must be taken from the current filings rather than inferred from the announcement.
Compare the funding burden, not just the latest income statement. Review cash and restricted cash, debt maturities, interest expense, capital expenditures, development spending and any planned financing. Then ask how much additional funding would be required if a vehicle, network, launch site or AI-related program is delayed.

Capital-intensity checklist
- What assets must be built before revenue can scale?
- Are capital expenditures maintenance spending, expansion spending or both?
- Does the company fund development internally, through debt, equity or customer advances?
- Could a delay extend the period of negative free cash flow?
- Would new shares dilute existing holders, and do different share classes affect control?
- Are debt covenants or collateral arrangements disclosed?
A mature contractor with stable cash generation may support a different valuation method from a company reinvesting heavily in new infrastructure. The same enterprise-value-to-revenue ratio can imply very different risk when one business needs sustained capital spending to reach its targets.
Execution and timing risk can dominate quarterly results
Evaluate launch reliability, development milestones, deployment schedules, regulatory approvals and the ability to deliver contracted services. SpaceX specifically cautions that launch or deployment timing can shift revenue recognition between periods. Weather and customer readiness can matter even when the underlying demand has not changed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor peers, look for schedule slips, cost overruns, warranty exposure, failed tests, certification dependencies and supply-chain bottlenecks. Distinguish an isolated timing shift from a technical or commercial problem. A delayed launch may move revenue to the next quarter; a failed development milestone may require additional capital, a contract renegotiation or a change in the expected market.
Track operational indicators alongside financial statements. Depending on the business, those can include successful launches, launch cadence, satellites or terminals deployed, subscribers, capacity sold, contract awards, program milestones and service availability. Use only indicators the company actually reports and define the period measured.
Governance, share classes and dilution affect valuation
After an IPO, market capitalization is not simply the share price shown on a quote page. Reconcile basic shares, diluted shares, restricted stock, options, convertible securities and any locked-up or secondary shares using the latest prospectus and filings.
Review the rights attached to each share class, voting control, board arrangements, related-party transactions and the possibility of future issuance. Control rights can affect how outside shareholders participate in major decisions. Dilution can reduce an investor’s economic interest even when the operating business grows.

Only after this work should you compare valuation ratios. For a profitable peer, price-to-earnings may be informative. For a company reporting net losses, that ratio may be negative or not meaningful. Enterprise-value-to-revenue can provide a rough cross-company reference, but it ignores margins, capital intensity, debt service and the quality of revenue. Enterprise-value-to-EBITDA is also unsuitable when EBITDA is negative or when large recurring capital expenditures are essential to the business.
Best Value
Valuation questions to answer
- What is the current equity value using the latest price and diluted share count?
- What is enterprise value after adding debt and other claims and subtracting usable cash?
- Which reporting period supplies the revenue, operating income and cash-flow denominator?
- Are the companies at similar stages of investment and profitability?
- Does the multiple reflect recurring services, milestone revenue, hardware deliveries or a mixture?
- What assumptions about growth, margins and reinvestment would justify the premium or discount?
Do not present a sector-average multiple as a direct valuation conclusion for SpaceX. A blended business with large investment requirements and reported losses needs a company-specific set of assumptions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A step-by-step method for comparing SpaceX with a public peer
- Define the question. Decide whether you are comparing growth, profitability, government exposure, launch capability, recurring connectivity or shareholder value. One peer rarely answers all of these.
- Freeze the date. Record the quote time, filing dates, fiscal year ends and currency. Do not combine a current SPCX price with an older peer filing without labeling the mismatch.
- Map business mix. Allocate disclosed revenue and operating results to launch, connectivity, AI-related, defense, commercial and government activities where possible.
- Normalize accounting periods. Use the same number of months and explain different fiscal calendars, one-time items and launch-related timing.
- Reconcile backlog. Copy each company’s definition, cancellation language and expected recognition schedule. Keep firm obligations separate from options and announced awards.
- Measure economics. Compare revenue growth, margins, net income, operating cash flow, free cash flow and capital expenditures. Highlight SpaceX’s reported losses rather than hiding them behind revenue growth.
- Test concentration and execution. Review major customers, program dependencies, launch or deployment milestones, regulatory approvals and delay scenarios.
- Calculate valuation. Use current diluted shares, debt and cash. Select ratios that remain meaningful for a loss-making, capital-intensive company.
- Run downside cases. Model slower launches, delayed deployments, higher capital spending, customer loss and additional financing. State which assumptions are your own analysis.
- Write the conclusion conditionally. Explain what would make SpaceX attractive or unattractive relative to that particular peer instead of declaring a universal winner.

| Timing and execution | Launch or deployment timing can shift revenue between periods. | Milestones, delivery schedules, certification and contract accounting. | Is volatility timing-related or evidence of a deeper problem? |
Populate the worksheet from the latest primary filings. If a cell is not disclosed, write not stated and explain why that limits the comparison. Do not fill gaps with an industry average or an estimate presented as fact.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling backlog revenue. Backlog is contracted work under a stated definition; it has not necessarily been delivered, billed or collected.
- Using $135 as the current stock price. It is the June 2026 IPO offer price.
- Comparing a launch quarter with a normal quarter. Launch and deployment timing can move recognized revenue and costs between periods.
- Ranking by revenue alone. Losses, margins, cash generation and capital requirements determine economic quality.
- Ignoring customer concentration. Two customers above 10% of consolidated revenue can make results sensitive to a small number of relationships.
- Mixing unlike backlog definitions. Options, framework agreements and enforceable obligations are not interchangeable.
- Applying price-to-earnings to a loss-making issuer. Use a valuation method that remains meaningful and explain its limitations.
- Assuming a government contract is risk-free. Appropriations, milestones, protests, modifications and delays still matter.
- Overlooking dilution and control. Share classes, equity awards and future financing can alter both voting power and per-share economics.
- Guessing anonymized customers. If a filing does not name a customer in the relevant passage, do not infer its identity.
What different investors should focus on
Growth-oriented investors
Examine whether reported growth is supported by enforceable contracts, service adoption and operational delivery rather than by a single launch-heavy quarter. Then test how much additional capital is required to support that growth and what margins could look like after the investment phase.
Income and quality-focused investors
Start with net income, operating cash flow, free cash flow, debt service and customer durability. SpaceX’s disclosed losses and stated expectation of further investment make profitability and cash conversion central questions, not secondary footnotes.
Defense and government-exposure investors
Separate government-related work from commercial and consumer-facing activities. Compare contract structures, renewal visibility, customer concentration, security requirements and the effect of public-sector budget cycles. A company with government exposure is not automatically equivalent to a defense-focused contractor.
Risk-conscious investors
Stress-test launch or deployment delays, technical setbacks, customer loss, regulatory changes, higher capital spending and additional financing. Consider whether the balance sheet can absorb those events without substantial dilution or a change in strategy.
How to keep the comparison current
SpaceX’s IPO facts and reported figures are tied to specific 2026 documents. Before using this comparison for a trade or long-term decision, check the newest SpaceX Investor Relations filings and the equivalent primary filings for each peer. Recheck the ticker, quote, diluted share count, latest losses or profits, backlog, customer concentration, debt and cash.
Also check whether the company has changed segment reporting, accounting policies, backlog definitions or guidance. A comparison can become stale even when the headline business description has not changed.
Final verdict
SpaceX is now a public stock, but it is not a clean substitute for every aerospace or defense company. The strongest comparison matches business mix first, then aligns periods and accounting, tests backlog quality, measures profitability and cash generation, examines capital needs and concentration, and finally applies a valuation method appropriate to a loss-making, investment-heavy issuer.
The central discipline is to keep disclosed facts separate from assumptions. SpaceX’s $135 IPO price, 2025 and first-quarter 2026 losses, $47.461 billion backlog and customer-concentration disclosures provide reference points. They do not, by themselves, establish that SPCX is cheap, expensive, safer or riskier than any particular peer. That conclusion requires current market data and a company-specific analysis using the framework above.
