Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo calibrate a MacBook display, first check System Settings > Displays: a Color profile menu means you can use Display Calibrator Assistant, while supported newer MacBook Pro models may offer presets or reference modes. Most people can leave the recommended profile in place; choose a different workflow when you have a defined color target or production need.
First identify which display controls your MacBook has
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays and select the built-in display if needed. The available controls depend on the Mac model and macOS version, so do not expect every MacBook to show the same menus.

- If you see Color profile, use the profile-based calibration steps below.
- If you see Preset or reference modes, check whether one matches the kind of work and output you have in mind.
Some Macs use reference modes rather than color profiles. Apple documents custom reference-mode controls for Apple Pro Display XDR, Studio Display XDR, Studio Display, and 14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro models from 2021 or later; this is not a general MacBook Air feature. Apple’s supported-device and custom reference-mode guidance explains the limits.

| Option | Best fit | Instrument | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep the recommended profile | Typical home or office use when colors already look acceptable | None | Apple says calibration usually is not necessary in a typical home or office environment. |
| Display Calibrator Assistant | A profile-based Mac when you need a custom calibrated profile | Apple’s assistant instructions do not specify an instrument as required | Menu names and adjustment steps vary by display and macOS. |
| Built-in preset or reference mode | A supported display and a known media or production target | None to select a preset | The mode needs to match both the target and viewing conditions. |
| Pro Display Calibrator Full Calibration | A supported display that needs measured recalibration | Compatible colorimeter or spectroradiometer | Check exact instrument and display compatibility; allow for a potentially lengthy calibration. |
Calibrate a profile-based MacBook display
- Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Displays.
- Open the menu next to Color profile, choose Customize, then select the Add button to open Display Calibrator Assistant.
- Follow the assistant’s prompts. It creates a calibrated color profile and assigns it to the display automatically.
The number of adjustments varies by display type. Apple says its recommended default profile usually does not need changing, and that calibration is generally unnecessary for a Mac used in a typical home or office. See Apple’s Display Calibrator Assistant instructions for current labels and details.

Select a preset or reference mode for a defined target
On a supported MacBook Pro, choose a preset or reference mode that matches the intended output—for example, a typical computer display or a specified photography or video workflow. Presets set display parameters such as color space, white point, gamma, and brightness. Apple’s guides describe setting up a display for a workflow and using presets and reference modes.
Reference modes are designed for controlled production conditions. A mode chosen for the wrong kind of media, or viewed under unsuitable conditions, may look unsatisfactory. Use the mode for its stated target rather than selecting one simply because its name sounds more professional.

Use measured calibration only when your display supports it
On a supported display, open System Settings > Displays, select the display, choose Preset, then select Calibrate Display to open Pro Display Calibrator. Its options serve different purposes:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Full Calibration recalibrates white point, primaries, luminance, and gamma response. It requires a compatible colorimeter or spectroradiometer.
- Fine-Tune Calibration makes a quicker measured adjustment of white point and luminance toward expected target values.
- Visual Fine-Tune adjusts white point by eye rather than with an instrument.
Apple says Full Calibration can take up to two hours, including a 30-minute warm-up; that is the stated maximum for this procedure, not a duration that applies to every calibration. For MacBook Pro and Studio Display XDR, Apple recommends a separate Fine-Tune Calibration for each reference mode after Full Calibration. Check Apple’s current Full Calibration instructions and confirm instrument compatibility for the exact display before starting.

Keep viewing conditions consistent
A profile or preset cannot make color appear identical in every room or guarantee that a screen will match a print. Apple identifies ambient lighting, screen position and angle, and display age as factors that affect perceived color. For critical assessment, keep the room lighting and your viewing position consistent, and use a mode suited to the output you are judging.
