If the notice means A total shares for every B old shares, calculate new total shares = old shares × (A ÷ B). If it means B old shares plus A new bonus shares, calculate new total shares = old shares × ((B + A) ÷ B) and new additional shares = old shares × (A ÷ B).
For example, 1,200 shares become 2,400 in a 2-for-1 split. A 1-for-2 bonus issue gives 600 additional shares, for 1,800 total. A 1-for-10 reverse split leaves 1,000 shares before any fractional-share settlement. The issuer’s notice and your broker’s corporate-action entry determine the effective date, rounding and treatment of fractions.

The two formulas that cover most announcements
Start by translating the ratio into words. The critical question is whether the first number describes the total shares after the event or only the new shares being issued.

New total shares = Old shares × (A ÷ B)
A 2-for-1 stock split therefore doubles the count. A 3-for-2 split multiplies it by 1.5. A 1-for-10 reverse split multiplies it by 0.1.
When the ratio gives additional bonus shares
Some bonus notices state the number of new shares issued for a specified number of old shares. In that wording:
New additional shares = Old shares × (A ÷ B)New total shares = Old shares + New additional shares
The combined expression is:
New total shares = Old shares × ((B + A) ÷ B)
A “1-for-2 bonus” normally means one new share for every two held. Holding 1,200 shares produces 600 additional shares and 1,800 total, not 600 total.
Why the wording matters
“2-for-1 split” ordinarily means two total shares replace each old share, so 1,200 become 2,400. “2-for-1 bonus issue” can mean two additional shares for every one old share, so 1,200 produce 2,400 additional and 3,600 total. The phrase alone is not enough; read the explanatory sentence in the official notice.
How forward splits, bonus issues and reverse splits differ
| Event | What the ratio usually describes | Share-count effect | Typical price adjustment | Main issue to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Forward stock split | Total shares after the split for each block of old shares | Increases the count | Per-share price falls by the same factor, subject to market movement | Effective date and any fractional treatment |
| Bonus issue | Often additional shares for each block of old shares | Increases the count without additional consideration | Per-share price is normally adjusted downward to reflect the larger count | Whether the ratio states new shares or total shares |
| Reverse split | Total shares after the consolidation for each block of old shares | Decreases the count | Per-share price normally rises by the inverse factor, subject to market movement | Rounding and cash in lieu of fractions |
Rule AS 20 describes bonus issues and splits as equity shares issued to existing shareholders for no additional consideration. Its two-for-one bonus example multiplies the pre-issue share count by three for the new total and by two for the additional shares. That example illustrates why “additional” and “total” must not be confused.

100 × (2 ÷ 1) = 200 shares
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission gives the matching price illustration: 100 shares at $100 become 200 shares at about $50 immediately after a two-for-one split. The position is approximately $10,000 immediately before and immediately after the adjustment, before ordinary market movements, commissions or taxes.
3-for-2 split
With 1,200 shares:
1,200 × (3 ÷ 2) = 1,800 shares
The increase is 600 shares. If the notice clearly defines the ratio as total shares after the split, no separate addition is needed.
5-for-4 split
With 800 shares:
800 × (5 ÷ 4) = 1,000 shares
You receive 200 more shares because the multiplier is 1.25.

If instead the notice defines “2-for-1” as two total shares for each old share, the result is 2,400 total. Resolve that distinction from the issuer’s definition before calculating.
1-for-10 reverse split
A one-for-ten consolidation converts each ten old shares into one:
10,000 × (1 ÷ 10) = 1,000 shares
The same method works for any holding. A holder of 37 shares would mathematically have 3.7 shares, but the broker or transfer agent must apply the stated rounding or cash-in-lieu procedure.
What happens to price, value and ownership?
A standard forward split changes the unit size, not the company’s assets. If the share count is multiplied by a factor of two, the reference price is normally divided by two. A 2-for-1 split can turn 100 shares at $100 into 200 shares at approximately $50. The immediate market value is therefore approximately unchanged at the adjustment moment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA bonus issue also enlarges the number of shares without a cash payment. Because every eligible holder receives shares according to the same entitlement, an individual’s percentage ownership is not normally diluted by the issue. The SEC states that a stock split does not dilute existing ownership interests. Market trading after the event can move the price above or below the mechanically adjusted level, so the inverse-price relationship is not a promise about future returns.
A reverse split works in the opposite direction. A 1-for-10 event reduces ten units to one and normally raises the quoted price by about ten times immediately after adjustment, subject to market trading. It does not by itself create economic value; it changes the number and denomination of shares.

Step-by-step method using the issuer’s notice
- Find the official announcement. Use the company, exchange, transfer agent or regulator notice that describes the corporate action. Do not rely solely on a broker’s abbreviated label such as “SPLIT 2:1.”
- Copy the ratio exactly. Record both numbers and the wording around them. Mark whether the notice says “new shares,” “additional shares,” “total shares,” “for every shares held,” or “old shares plus.”
- Identify the relevant dates. Record the record date, ex-date, effective date and payment or allocation date. Different jurisdictions and securities can use these dates differently, so the notice controls.
- Determine the eligible holding. Apply the ratio to the shares held under the notice’s eligibility rule, rather than automatically using the balance you see on a later date.
- Choose the correct formula. Use the total-share multiplier for a split or consolidation. Use the additional-share formula when a bonus ratio specifies new shares.
- Calculate before rounding. Keep the exact result through the calculation. Only round if the corporate-action terms require it.
- Check the broker entry. Look for a separate line adding or removing shares, a revised price or cost-basis entry, and any cash-in-lieu payment.
- Reconcile the statement. Compare the post-event quantity with your calculation and retain the announcement and statement with your investment records.
Fractional shares and cash in lieu
Fractions arise most often in reverse splits, but they can also occur in a forward split or bonus issue when the holding is not divisible by the ratio’s denominator. There is no universal broker practice. The terms may provide for:
- cash in lieu of the fractional entitlement;
- rounding up or down to a whole share;
- aggregation and sale of fractional interests, followed by distribution of the proceeds; or
- retention of a fractional position where the market and account support it.
Investor.gov uses a one-for-ten reverse split example and notes that some events cash out small shareholders who would otherwise receive a fraction. That treatment is not automatic for every issuer. Read the corporate-action notice, transfer-agent instructions and your broker’s entry before assuming you will receive a fraction or a particular cash amount.
Example with a fractional entitlement
If you own 37 shares in a 1-for-10 reverse split, the mathematical entitlement is 3.7 shares. If the terms require whole shares, the 0.7-share portion may be sold and paid as cash, rounded under the stated rule, or handled through another method. The final share count cannot be determined from the ratio alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Dates that can change your result
The record date identifies the holders used to establish entitlement in the terms. The ex-date is the date on which the security trades without the entitlement under the applicable market rules. The effective date is when the split or issue changes the legal share capital or trading unit. The payment or allocation date is when the shares or cash may actually appear in an account.
These dates are not interchangeable. A purchase, sale, transfer or short position around the event can be governed by settlement and market-specific rules. If your broker balance does not match the simple multiplication, compare the transaction date and settlement status with the issuer’s eligibility language and ask the broker for the corporate-action terms.
Cost basis, tax records and jurisdiction
A split or bonus issue generally requires an allocation of the existing tax cost across the new number of shares rather than treating the event as a cash purchase. The exact rule depends on the country, security type, account and tax regime. Keep the issuer announcement, pre-event statement, post-event statement and any cash-in-lieu advice.

Cash paid for a fractional entitlement can have a different tax treatment from the share adjustment. Do not infer a tax result from the mechanical share-count formula. Confirm the treatment with the relevant tax authority or a qualified adviser in your jurisdiction.
Best Value
Historical guidance from India’s securities regulator stated that a company announcing a bonus issue after board approval had to implement it within six months and could not later change that decision. That is historical guidance, not a worldwide rule; verify the current requirement where the issuer is incorporated and where your account is taxed.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Reading a bonus ratio as a split ratio
Mistake: Treating a 1-for-2 bonus as 1,200 × 1/2 = 600 total shares.
Correction: Those 600 are normally the additional shares; add them to the 1,200 old shares for 1,800 total.
Using the price ratio to calculate shares
Mistake: Dividing or multiplying the share count by a quoted price change.
Correction: Calculate from the corporate-action ratio. Price is adjusted inversely as a market convention; it is not the input to the entitlement formula.
Recommended Free Tools
Ignoring the denominator
Mistake: Treating 3-for-2 as a three-times increase.
Correction: Multiply by 3/2. The denominator states how many old shares form the entitlement block.
Assuming “record date” means the date the new shares appear
Mistake: Expecting the allocation on the record date itself.
Correction: Check the effective and allocation dates separately; the account posting can occur later.
Forgetting cash in lieu
Mistake: Reporting a mismatch as a broker error when a fractional entitlement was sold.
Correction: Look for a cash-in-lieu line and compare its quantity and value with the terms.
Comparing balances across accounts without adjusting for transfers
Mistake: Applying the ratio to a current balance that includes a later transfer or trade.
Correction: Reconstruct the eligible holding on the applicable date, then apply the ratio.
A practical reconciliation example
Assume an investor held 2,750 shares on the applicable date and the issuer announced a 3-for-2 split. The entitlement is:
2,750 × (3 ÷ 2) = 4,125 shares
No fraction occurs because 2,750 is divisible by two after multiplication. If the broker posts 4,125 shares but shows a different market value, compare the adjusted per-share price and the market’s movement, not just the quantity.
Now assume the same investor held 2,751 shares. The mathematical result is 4,126.5 shares. The issuer’s terms must determine whether the half share is retained, rounded or paid in cash. Until that policy is known, the exact final whole-share balance cannot be stated.
Quick Recap
What to retain from the calculation
- The ratio controls the new count; use the total-share multiplier when the notice describes total shares.
- For bonus wording, calculate both additional shares and total shares.
- A forward split or bonus issue normally lowers the per-share price in inverse proportion at the adjustment, while immediate market value is approximately unchanged.
- A reverse split lowers the count and may produce a fractional-share cash payment.
- Dates, rounding, allocation timing and cash-in-lieu treatment come from the issuer’s terms and the broker’s corporate-action processing.
