To calculate a simple distribution yield, add the fund’s per-share distributions for the period you want to measure, divide by a matching fund share price or net asset value (NAV), and multiply by 100:
Yield (%) = (distributions per share ÷ fund price or NAV) × 100

For a trailing 12-month (TTM) figure, use every distribution paid per share during the previous 12 months. Divide by the current market price when you want the yield available to someone buying ETF shares, or by NAV when you want a fund-accounting measure. Label the result with its convention, denominator and as-of date. An S&P 500 index is only a benchmark; you calculate an investor’s yield from an ETF or mutual fund that tracks it, because investors cannot buy shares of the index itself.

What “yield” means for an S&P 500 fund
Yield measures cash income relative to a stated value. For an index fund, that cash generally comes from dividends paid by the stocks in the portfolio, less fund expenses and any amounts retained or handled under the fund’s distribution policy. The result is an income percentage, not a prediction of the fund’s share-price performance.

The phrase “S&P 500 index fund” can describe an exchange-traded fund (ETF) or a mutual fund. The S&P 500 itself has no shares, distributions or investable price. Investor.gov explains that index funds are mutual funds or ETFs designed to track an index and that an investor cannot invest directly in a market index. Therefore, identify the exact fund and ticker before quoting a yield.
Different websites can show different percentages for the same fund because they may use different periods, formulas or denominators. A useful label looks like “TTM distribution yield at market price, as of October 18, 2026” rather than simply “S&P 500 yield.”

This is the most direct calculation of cash actually paid:
TTM yield (%) = (sum of distributions paid per share in the last 12 months ÷ current price or NAV) × 100
Collect each distribution whose payment date falls in the chosen 12-month window, add the per-share amounts, and divide by a denominator measured on the date you specify. A market-price denominator answers what a buyer of ETF shares receives relative to the traded price. An NAV denominator answers what the fund distributed relative to the value of its underlying assets.
TTM yield is backward-looking. It captures an unusual special distribution if one occurred, and a rapidly changing share price can move the percentage even when the cash payments do not change. It is useful when the question is, “How much did this share actually distribute over the past year?”

Forward yield (%) ≈ (most recent quarterly distribution × 4 ÷ current price or NAV) × 100
The multiplication by four assumes the latest quarterly amount repeats for a full year. It is an estimate, not a contractual promise. If distributions are monthly, annualize the latest monthly payment by 12; if the fund has an irregular schedule, explain the assumption rather than presenting the result as an observed annual yield.
Some fund pages call a similar figure a distribution rate. Fidelity describes distribution rate as distribution per share multiplied by 12 and divided by the ETF’s most recent ex-date NAV. That convention is an annualized indication, so it can differ from both a TTM market-price yield and a 30-day SEC yield.
30-day SEC yield
The SEC 30-day yield is a standardized disclosure, not simply the last four cash payments. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission says it approximates the current income generated by portfolio securities during a historical 30-day period after expenses and presents that amount as an annualized percentage of offering price.
State Street defines the calculation operationally as annualized net investment income earned over the most recent 30 days divided by the maximum offering price on the last day of that period. The formula incorporates the prescribed 30-day period, projected stock dividends, expenses and other SEC rules. Because it is a short, standardized lookback, it can differ materially from a TTM distribution yield. Fidelity cautions that its hypothetical annualized income can differ from actual fund distributions.
| Measure | What goes in the numerator | Typical denominator | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TTM distribution yield | All per-share distributions paid in the preceding 12 months | Current market price or NAV | Cash actually distributed over a recent year | Can be distorted by special payments or a changing price |
| Forward or indicated yield | A recent payment annualized (for example, latest quarter × 4) | Current market price or NAV; some disclosures use ex-date NAV | A quick estimate of a run-rate income level | Assumes the recent payment repeats |
| 30-day SEC yield | Annualized net investment income under the SEC’s 30-day formula, after expenses | Offering-price convention specified by the SEC formula | Standardized comparison among comparable funds | Not a record of cash that will necessarily be paid |
How to calculate a TTM yield step by step
- Identify the exact fund. Record its legal name, ticker, share class if applicable, and whether it is an ETF or mutual fund. Do not substitute the S&P 500 index level for a fund price.
- Set the measurement date. For example, if the calculation date is October 18, 2026, use distributions paid during the preceding 12 months and a price or NAV from October 18, 2026 (or the latest available value, clearly labeled).
- List every per-share distribution. Use the fund’s distribution history and include each payment in the window. Keep ordinary and special distributions identifiable so an unusual payment is not mistaken for a normal run rate.
- Add the payments. If four quarterly payments were $1.35, $1.45, $1.50 and $1.70, the TTM total is $6.00 per share.
- Choose one denominator. Divide by the ETF’s market price for an investor-facing traded-share yield, or by NAV for a fund-accounting yield. Do not mix a market price from one date with distributions or NAV from another without disclosing the mismatch.
- Apply the formula. Divide the total distributions by the selected price or NAV and multiply by 100.
- Label the result completely. State “TTM distribution yield,” the denominator type, the as-of date, and whether the figure is your calculation or a fund-reported number.
Worked calculations
Arithmetic illustration using a market price
Suppose an S&P 500 ETF paid $6.00 per share over the last four quarters and its current share price is $600. The calculation is:
($6.00 ÷ $600) × 100 = 1.00%
The result is a 1.00% trailing distribution yield at the stated market price. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a current market quote.
The same distributions measured at NAV
If the fund’s NAV on the measurement date were $595 instead, the NAV-based result would be:

Rounded to two decimal places, that is approximately 1.01%. The difference does not mean one calculation is wrong; each answers a different denominator question.
Forward estimate from one quarterly payment
If the latest quarterly distribution is $1.55 and the ETF trades at $600, annualizing that payment gives $6.20:
($1.55 × 4 ÷ $600) × 100 ≈ 1.03%
Call this an indicated or forward yield. It assumes $1.55 continues every quarter. If the next payments change, the estimate changes too.
Fund-page examples with dates
A retrieved Vanguard page for VOO displayed a 1.07% dividend yield as of July 31, 2026, and a 0.03% expense ratio as of April 28, 2026. Those are dated sponsor disclosures, not permanent values for every S&P 500 fund or for VOO at a later date. Use the page’s own definition before comparing its percentage with a separately calculated TTM or SEC figure.
Market price, NAV and timing
Market price is the price at which ETF shares trade during the session. NAV is the per-share value of the fund’s holdings after liabilities, calculated under the fund’s valuation schedule. A market-price yield is closest to the experience of a person buying or selling ETF shares. An NAV yield is useful for comparing the income produced by the portfolio itself.
Use a same-date denominator whenever practical. A distribution paid months ago can be divided by today’s price for a current yield, but the date needs to be explicit. Do not divide a per-share distribution by the S&P 500 index level: the index level is not a fund share price and has no matching distribution-per-share unit.
ETF market prices can be above or below NAV during trading. That difference means market-price and NAV yields may diverge even when the portfolio income is identical. For a mutual fund that is priced at NAV, the denominator convention is usually less visibly different, but the date and calculation policy still matter.

Distribution history
Use the fund sponsor’s distribution or dividend history. Record the ex-dividend date, record date, payment date and per-share amount when shown. For a TTM cash calculation, define whether your window is based on payment dates or another stated convention, then apply it consistently. Include return-of-capital or special distributions only when the fund identifies them as part of the amount you are measuring, and describe their nature.

Price and NAV
Take the market price from a reliable quote for the chosen date and note whether it is a closing price, intraday price or latest available quote. Take NAV from the sponsor or fund reporting source for the same date when making an NAV calculation. A closing price and an end-of-day NAV are generally more comparable than an intraday price and a prior-day NAV.
SEC yield and other reported fields
Fund pages and prospectuses may show a 30-day SEC yield, dividend yield, distribution rate or other labels. Read the definition and as-of date next to the number. A reported SEC yield should not be recomputed by adding the last four cash payments, because it follows a separate formula.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Comparing two or more S&P 500 funds
A higher displayed percentage is not automatically a better investment. Use three comparison axes before drawing a conclusion.
| Comparison axis | How to apply it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Income convention | Compare TTM with TTM, forward with forward, or SEC 30-day with SEC 30-day. | Mixing formulas can make an apples-to-oranges difference look like a portfolio advantage. |
| Denominator and date | Use market price or NAV consistently and record the as-of date for every figure. | A price change or a premium/discount to NAV can move a percentage without a change in distributions. |
| Costs and tracking | Compare expense ratios and the fund’s tracking difference alongside yield. | Income retained by investors depends on costs and how closely the fund follows its index. |
For a clean comparison, create columns for ticker, yield convention, distribution period, numerator, denominator type, denominator date, expense ratio, and reported tracking difference. If a value is not published for one fund, mark it as “not stated” rather than filling the gap with an estimate.
Expenses, tracking and total return
Fund expenses are deducted from assets and reduce the income that remains in the portfolio. Investor.gov notes that fees and expenses, trading costs and tracking error can cause an index fund to underperform its index. A fund’s expense ratio therefore belongs beside its yield, not in a footnote.
The VOO summary prospectus dated April 28, 2026 lists 0.03% total annual fund operating expenses. That is a dated fund disclosure; expense ratios can change and should be checked in the current prospectus or sponsor materials.
Yield is only the income component of an investment result. Total return also includes the change in the fund’s share price, plus reinvested distributions when the calculation is total-return based. A fund can have a lower yield and a higher total return, or the reverse, depending on price movements and portfolio outcomes. Do not present a yield calculation as a forecast of total return.

Different periods
Your TTM window may end on a different day from the sponsor’s dividend-yield field. One extra payment or a payment that falls just outside the window can change the numerator.
Best Value
Different denominators
A sponsor may use NAV, a market price, an average price or a price from a specified date. Your use of today’s quote will produce a different result when the denominator policy differs.
Annualization assumptions
A forward rate assumes the latest payment repeats. A fund with changing quarterly payments can show a forward figure that is above or below its eventual TTM result.
Special distributions
A one-time capital-gains or special distribution can make a recent TTM yield look unusually high. Keep it in a “cash paid” calculation, but flag it when using the number to think about recurring income.

The SEC 30-day yield uses net investment income over a prescribed 30-day period, annualized under the SEC formula and adjusted for expenses. It is expected to differ from a distribution-based calculation, especially when portfolio dividends, expenses or payment timing have recently changed.
Rounding
Carry at least four decimal places through the calculation and round only the displayed result. Rounding each quarterly payment before adding can create a small difference.
A practical spreadsheet layout
For a reproducible TTM calculation, put each payment on its own row with payment date and per-share amount. Sum the amounts that fall inside your defined 12-month window. In separate cells, enter the market price, NAV and their dates. Then calculate two outputs:
=SUM(eligible_distributions)/market_price*100for a market-price TTM yield.=SUM(eligible_distributions)/NAV*100for an NAV TTM yield.
Add text fields for “TTM,” the denominator type and the as-of date. Keep a separate row for the latest payment and use =latest_quarterly_payment*4/price*100 only in a clearly labeled forward-yield column.

Current figures require fresh dates
Fund yields, distributions, prices, NAVs, holdings and expense disclosures change. A State Street SPY page reported a 0.94% 30-Day SEC Yield as of September 25, 2026; that figure is a dated disclosure, not a timeless yield for every S&P 500 fund. Likewise, the dated VOO figures above should not be copied into a later article or spreadsheet without checking the current sponsor page.
When publishing or sharing a result, include the ticker, formula, numerator period, denominator type, denominator date and source date. That documentation lets another reader reproduce the number and understand why it may move tomorrow.
