Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Set your stream bitrate from the destination platform’s current guidance, then check that your upload connection can sustain it with headroom. There is no single ideal bitrate for every live stream: the right value depends on platform, ingest codec, resolution, frame rate, network conditions and encoder capacity.
Calculate a bitrate your setup can sustain
- Choose the destination and ingest codec. Start with the platform’s settings for the codec you plan to send. YouTube and Twitch publish different recommendations; do not treat one platform’s numbers as universal. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and Twitch’s broadcasting guidelines.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate. Higher resolution and frame rate generally require more bitrate and increase encoding demands. If your connection or encoder cannot sustain the combination, lower the resolution, frame rate or bitrate, then test again.
- Measure upload capacity under normal conditions. Upload speed—not download speed—is the relevant network constraint. Measure when your connection is being used as it will be during the stream; other devices and network activity can reduce the capacity available to the encoder. A speed-test peak is not proof that the same rate will be available continuously.
- Leave headroom. Twitch’s FAQ gives upload speed at least 30% above the configured stream bitrate as general practice. For example, a 6 Mbps stream calls for at least 8 Mbps upload capacity under that rule. A Twitch Sports explainer published in 2020 instead advises keeping broadcast bitrate at or below 80% of consistent upload bandwidth. These are different rules of thumb, not interchangeable guarantees; check current platform guidance and validate your own connection. See the Twitch streaming FAQ and the 2020 Twitch Sports explainer.
- Test the actual stream. Use the encoder, network, resolution, frame rate and audio you intend to use. Include representative movement, then monitor the platform’s stream-health feedback. YouTube says to test before going live and monitor stream health; Twitch also directs streamers to network tests and stream-health tools.
Use platform-specific settings as your starting point
The figures below are platform recommendations or examples, not universal prescriptions. YouTube’s current live encoder help page lists the following recommended RTMP/RTMPS ingest bitrates. Mbps means megabits per second. Recheck the platform’s live settings because supported codecs and recommendations can change.

| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube AV1 or H.265 recommendation | YouTube H.264 recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
YouTube lists minimums separately from recommendations. At 1080p60, for example, its minimum is 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 6 Mbps for H.264, while its recommended values are 12 Mbps and 17 Mbps respectively. A minimum is not a quality target. The same YouTube guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not longer than four seconds), and up to 60 fps. Consult the YouTube live encoder settings for current requirements and supported ingest details.
Twitch examples
Twitch’s broadcasting guide gives these example settings: 6,000 kbps at 1080p60, 4,500 kbps at 1080p30, 4,500 kbps at 720p60, and 3,000 kbps at 720p30. Its examples specify CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. These are Twitch examples, not substitutes for YouTube’s recommendations. Twitch also notes that encoder choice affects system load: x264 uses CPU resources, while NVENC uses a dedicated GPU encoder. See Twitch’s broadcasting guidelines.

Set the encoder and check the whole stream
- Match the platform’s ingest settings. Set the recommended bitrate for your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec where your platform and encoder support that combination. Use the platform’s stated rate control and keyframe interval; YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second interval, not exceeding four seconds, while Twitch’s cited examples use CBR and two seconds.
- Account for the encoder as well as the network. A connection that can carry the bitrate does not ensure the computer can encode the chosen resolution and frame rate. If encoding overload or dropped frames appear, reduce the workload—such as by lowering resolution or frame rate—or adjust the encoder settings, then test again.
- Evaluate the picture and stability together. Test motion and audio representative of the real broadcast. A static screen can conceal problems that appear in a fast-moving scene. Use the platform’s stream-health feedback and favor a stable feed over a higher setting that produces dropped frames or pushes the connection to its limit.
Troubleshoot bitrate-related problems
| Symptom | Likely issue to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Buffering, unstable ingest or dropped frames | The configured bitrate may exceed consistent upload capacity, or other devices may be consuming upload bandwidth. | Measure upload under representative conditions, reduce the bitrate or stream resolution/frame rate, limit competing upload use, then run another test. |
| Encoder overload or performance warnings | The selected resolution and frame rate may exceed the computer’s encoding capacity; encoder type also affects which system resources are used. | Lower resolution or frame rate, revisit encoder settings, and test again. Twitch’s guide distinguishes CPU-based x264 from GPU NVENC encoding. |
| Picture looks poor despite a stable connection | The selected bitrate may be below the destination’s recommendation for the resolution, frame rate or codec, or the chosen quality may be too ambitious for the available connection. | Compare your settings with the current platform table. If you cannot sustain the recommended bitrate with headroom, use a lower resolution or frame rate rather than forcing an unstable stream. |
| Settings appear correct but the live feed is still unhealthy | A brief speed-test result may not represent sustained capacity, or the test did not reproduce the broadcast’s movement, audio or network use. | Repeat a representative test, inspect platform stream-health feedback, and adjust one variable at a time so you can identify the constraint. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded video running continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without leaving your computer or home connection on. It plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
