To keep website text legible in a printed screenshot report, preview the page with print CSS active, check contrast and reflow, then inspect a sample of the actual screenshot or PDF at the size readers will use. There is no universally correct font size, screenshot scale, DPI, or printer setting: the finished report is the test that matters.
Choose the right output: screenshot or PDF
First decide what the report needs to preserve. A screenshot is a fixed visual record of the rendered page. A PDF is generated through the browser’s print workflow. Chrome documents both screenshot capture and printing to PDF as separate Headless workflows; neither format is guaranteed to be more legible in every situation. Chrome Headless command-line reference

- Use a screenshot when the report needs to show the page as a visual record.
- Use a PDF when you need a document produced through browser print rendering.
- Whichever you choose, judge readability in the finished report at its intended display or print size.
Preview the page with print styles
Websites can use different CSS for printing than for on-screen display. In Chrome DevTools, emulate the print CSS media type to see the print-specific layout before making the report. Chrome’s instructions are in View a page in print mode.

- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Open the DevTools command menu and choose “Show Rendering.”
- In the Rendering panel, find “Emulate CSS media type” and select “print.”
- Inspect the page for text that becomes too small, disappears, overlaps, or loses contrast in the print layout.
If you control the site, adjust its print CSS and repeat the preview. If you do not, use the browser’s available output settings and make a test capture or PDF before producing the full report. Print emulation previews the site’s print presentation; it does not establish a universal setting for every printer or report workflow.

Check contrast, size, and reflow
Contrast
Small or pale text can be difficult to read even when its nominal size seems adequate. Chrome DevTools accessibility tools can identify contrast issues and suggest color changes; see the Accessibility features reference. Chrome’s guidance notes that low contrast makes text less readable. A historical statistic on its Make your website more readable page says 83.9% of the top million home pages had a low-contrast text issue in February 2022. That figure describes website home pages in that audit, not printed reports.
Text size and reflow
Do not assess text size only in the default browser view. Enlarge text or narrow the viewport where that reflects how report readers may use the page, and check whether content remains available without being clipped or lost. Chrome’s accessibility reference describes viewport resizing as a way to assess reflow for people using enlarged text. Look for horizontal scrolling, truncated labels, overlapping elements, and content that moves out of view.

There is no supported single font-size or scaling percentage that guarantees legibility across pages and report formats. The relevant measure is whether readers can comfortably read the final artifact at its expected size.

- Capture a representative page using the output format you intend to deliver.
- Place it in the report or print it using the workflow readers will receive.
- Review it at the expected reading size—not only zoomed in on a large monitor.
- Check body text, small labels, links, footnotes, and any text over images or colored backgrounds.
- If text is hard to read, revisit print styling, contrast, viewport/layout, or report placement, then create and inspect another sample.
A browser preview is useful, but it is not a substitute for checking the report artifact itself. Output size, scaling, paper format, and printer settings vary; the available sources do not establish a universal combination that ensures readable results.
