Estimate screenshot storage by multiplying captures per day by the measured average file size and the number of days you retain them: daily captures × bytes per screenshot × retention days. Add separate allowances for extra viewport versions, replicas, retained versions, and indexes. Measure your own screenshots; there is no universal file size that reliably predicts every site or capture setup.
Calculate the retained screenshot payload
Let P be the number of screenshots captured each day, S the average output size in bytes, and D the number of days each screenshot is retained:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
retained image bytes = P × S × D
If each page is captured at multiple viewport sizes or device presets, include those variants in P or multiply the result by the number of variants. For sites with different retention periods, calculate each site’s footprint separately and add the results.

Worked example
Suppose a team captures 500 screenshots per day, averages 400,000 bytes per screenshot, and retains each for 90 days:
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
500 × 400,000 × 90 = 18,000,000,000 bytes
That is about 16.8 GiB, before replicas, indexes, or other overhead. These are illustrative inputs to show the calculation, not typical or benchmarked screenshot sizes.
Convert bytes to binary storage units
Amazon S3 defines 1 GiB as 230 bytes (1,073,741,824 bytes) and 1 TiB as 240 bytes. Divide your byte total by the relevant value to express the estimate in GiB or TiB. See Amazon S3 pricing for the unit definitions and current pricing details.
Measure screenshot size instead of guessing
Capture a representative sample with the settings you intend to use in production, then calculate its mean file size. For a more cautious capacity estimate, also examine a high-percentile size so unusually large pages do not surprise you. Do not treat a single screenshot or an assumed average as a dependable workload-wide figure.
Make the sample reflect the factors that affect your actual output:
Rank #2
- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
- Full-page captures versus viewport-only captures.
- Image format and quality settings.
- Different page types and site designs.
- Multiple viewport or device variants per page.
- Any browser-generated metadata you retain alongside the image.
Once measured, use the mean for a central estimate and the high-percentile size for a more conservative scenario. Keep the measured payload separate from operational allowances rather than folding an unexplained multiplier into the file-size estimate.
Adjust for changing capture volume and retention
The simple formula assumes a steady daily volume and a uniform retention period. If your daily capture count varies, add the sizes of all screenshots that will still be within the retention window on the date you are planning for. This gives a more accurate estimate than multiplying by a long-term average when traffic or capture schedules are uneven.
The retained footprint grows roughly in proportion to daily captures, average screenshot size, and retention days. If a policy changes, recalculate with the new inputs rather than assuming the effect is limited to one factor: increasing the number of viewport variants, for example, also increases the number of stored objects.
Plan capacity beyond the image files
For a practical capacity plan, separate the measured screenshot payload from everything stored around it:
Rank #3
- Capacity Display Variance: 250GB external ssd often appears as around 232GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 250 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
planned bytes = retained image bytes + metadata/indexes + replicas + retained versions + growth reserve
Use measured system data to set the growth reserve; no universal percentage is established. Count duplicate copies, replicas, and old versions explicitly. If a versioned object is overwritten, its prior version may continue to consume storage and incur charges until it is removed.
Estimate the storage bill separately from capacity
Knowing the retained bytes does not determine the bill on its own. AWS says S3 storage pricing depends on object size, time stored during the month, and storage class; its billing guidance also treats requests, retrievals, early deletion, storage management, and bandwidth as separate charge areas. Retained object versions are billable too. See AWS Billing reports for Amazon S3.
Before selecting a storage class or projecting a monthly cost, account for the following where relevant:
Rank #4
- SMALL DRIVE. POWERHOUSE PERFORMANCE: The Verbatim Pocket SSD delivers high-speed storage in an ultracompact design built for creators, gamers, travelers, and everyday backup.
- COMPACT AND CONVENIENT: Ultra-lightweight and small enough to slip into your back pocket, with a convenient keyring and cable holder to keep your cable neat and tangle-free
- HIGH-SPEED READ AND WRITE PERFORMANCE: Read speeds up to 1000MB/s and write speeds up to 1000MB/s help you transfer files, back up content, and access media faster
- RELIABLE SSD PERFORMANCE: Durable solid-state storage with no moving parts for dependable everyday use and improved energy efficiency
- USB-C COMPATIBILITY: Connects easily to USB-C PCs, Macs, tablets, smartphones, gaming consoles, and more.
- Stored bytes over time, including duplicates and retained versions.
- Object count and write/read frequency: daily screenshots can create many small objects, and request charges are distinct from storage charges.
- Storage class and region, plus how often images must be retrieved.
- Transfer or egress, lifecycle transitions, inventory or monitoring features, and replicas.
- Minimum billable object sizes, metadata overhead, minimum storage durations, and restore requirements for archive classes.
Use current region-specific prices and the provider’s calculator when you need a quote. Avoid reusing a per-GB rate without checking the applicable region, class, and billing period.
Check archive-tier costs and access limits
Archive storage can be worth evaluating for large collections that are rarely opened, but its per-object overhead and retrieval constraints can change the economics. AWS documents these S3-specific conditions:
| Storage class | Documented condition | What it means for screenshots |
|---|---|---|
| Glacier Instant Retrieval | 128 KB minimum billable object size | Small image objects can be billed as though they meet the minimum size. Source: Amazon S3 pricing. |
| Glacier Flexible Retrieval | 40 KB additional metadata per object: 32 KB billed at the archive rate and 8 KB at S3 Standard rates; 90-day minimum storage duration | For N archived screenshots, the documented metadata overhead alone is N × 40 KB, split across those rates, before image payload and other charges. Deleting, overwriting, or transitioning earlier can trigger prorated charges for the remaining duration. Sources: Amazon S3 pricing and AWS usage report details. |
| Glacier Deep Archive | 40 KB additional metadata per object: 32 KB billed at the archive rate and 8 KB at S3 Standard rates; 180-day minimum storage duration | The same per-object metadata calculation applies. Early deletion, overwrite, or transition can trigger prorated remaining-duration charges. Sources: Amazon S3 pricing and AWS usage report details. |
Glacier Flexible Retrieval and Deep Archive objects cannot be accessed directly in real time: a restore request creates a temporary copy first. During restoration, both the archived object and the temporary copy are billed, and retrieval requests can add charges. That makes these tiers a poor fit when people need to inspect historical screenshots immediately or restore many images at once. See Amazon S3 pricing and AWS usage report details.

How long will website screenshots take to fill a storage limit?
Divide the available capacity by your daily screenshot payload, then account for other stored copies and overhead. If you retain screenshots on a rolling basis, the retained footprint rises until it reaches the retention-window total; its timing depends on your daily volume and measured file sizes.
