In Australia, calculate crypto tax one disposal at a time in Australian dollars (AUD): work out each event’s proceeds, subtract its cost base, test any loss against the reduced cost base, then combine all gains and losses and apply any eligible CGT discount. Selling for dollars is only one trigger. Swapping coins, gifting crypto, spending it, or converting it to another currency can also be capital gains tax (CGT) events, even when no Australian dollars reach your bank account.
This guide explains the calculation, records, myTax labels, loss carry-forwards, staking and airdrop income, the limited personal-use exception, and the situations where professional advice is sensible. Tax treatment depends on your residency, purpose, activity and income year, so use the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) instructions for the year you are lodging.

What the calculation produces
For every CGT event, establish:
- the AUD value of what you received or disposed of (the proceeds);
- the AUD cost base of the asset you disposed of, including eligible incidental acquisition costs; and
- if the result appears to be a loss, the reduced cost base used for loss testing.
Section 100-45 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 sets the core sequence: subtract the cost base from the capital proceeds. If the proceeds exceed the cost base, you have a capital gain. If they do not, compare the proceeds with the reduced cost base. Proceeds below the reduced cost base produce a capital loss; proceeds between the cost base and reduced cost base produce neither a gain nor a loss.

Which crypto transactions are CGT events?
The ATO treats crypto assets as property for CGT purposes in many investment situations. A disposal occurs when ownership or economic control changes, not only when money is paid into an Australian bank account.
Selling for Australian or foreign currency
Disposing of bitcoin, ether or another asset for Australian dollars or a foreign currency is a CGT event. Use the AUD value at the relevant transaction time, retaining the exchange rate or valuation evidence you used.
Swapping one crypto asset for another
A coin-to-coin trade is two linked actions for tax purposes: you dispose of the asset you give up and acquire the asset you receive. The market value of the received asset at the time of the swap is generally the practical starting point for valuing the disposal in AUD. ATO assistant commissioner Tim Loh described it this way: “Swapping is like transferring. Technically, what you’re doing is disposing one type of coin to acquire another one.”

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Because each swap is a disposal, a year with no cash withdrawals can still contain taxable gains or reportable losses.
Gifts and transfers
Gifting crypto can be a CGT event even if you receive no payment. Keep the date, asset, quantity, recipient, purpose and AUD market value. Transfers between wallets you own may require careful analysis of whether beneficial ownership actually changed; preserve wallet addresses and transaction records and obtain advice if the ownership is unclear.
Spending crypto on goods or services
Using crypto to pay a merchant or another person disposes of the asset. Record the AUD value of the goods or services, the asset quantity and the transaction fee at the time of payment.
Converting between currencies
Exchanging crypto for Australian dollars or another fiat currency is a disposal. A crypto-to-crypto conversion is also a disposal of the asset surrendered.

Staking rewards and airdrops
The ATO investor toolkit says staking rewards and airdrops should be included as income at the “Other income” label where applicable. The asset you receive then has its own acquisition date and AUD value. When you later sell, swap, spend or gift that asset, calculate a separate CGT event using those acquisition details. Keep the income calculation and the later CGT calculation together so the same receipt is not omitted or counted twice.

Business or trading activity
Frequent dealing, a commercial purpose, trading-like systems or other business indicators can change the tax treatment. This article describes the investor CGT workflow, not a determination that your activity is on capital account. If you operate a crypto business, use DeFi extensively or cannot explain the purpose of transactions, ask a registered tax agent to classify the activity before lodging.
The limited personal-use asset exception
A gain on a personal-use crypto asset may be disregarded when the asset was acquired for less than A$10,000 and the statutory conditions are met. The exception is narrow. The ATO says the longer crypto is held, the less likely it is to qualify as a personal-use asset, particularly where it was held as an investment or to increase in value.
Document your original purpose, how and when the asset was used, the amount paid and the period held. Do not label an investment as personal use merely because it was eventually spent. If an asset had mixed purposes, or you are relying on the exception for a material amount, obtain advice and retain evidence supporting the purpose at acquisition.
Records to collect before calculating
Start with complete data rather than a tax calculator. Export histories from every exchange, broker, wallet and payment service, and save the original files in an unaltered format.
- date and time of each acquisition, disposal, transfer, reward and fee;
- asset name, quantity and transaction identifier;
- AUD value and the exchange-rate or pricing source used;
- fees and whether they relate to acquiring, disposing of or transferring the asset;
- the transaction purpose, such as investment, payment, gift, staking or airdrop;
- counterparty details and sending and receiving wallet addresses where available;
- receipts, invoices, platform statements and screenshots for records that cannot be exported; and
- the acquisition parcel needed to calculate the cost base of each disposal.
ATO record guidance generally requires records for five years under a later-of rule: from preparation or acquisition, completion of the transaction, or the income year in which the CGT event occurred, depending on which date applies. Retain them longer when an amendment period, an unresolved matter or carried-forward capital losses means they are still relevant. Keep a secure backup; an exchange download can disappear after an account closes.
Step-by-step calculation for each disposal
- Identify the disposal. List every sale, swap, gift, payment, currency conversion and other event that changed ownership or control during the income year.
- Match the acquisition parcel. Find the date, quantity, AUD value and eligible acquisition costs for the units disposed of. If records do not identify the parcel clearly, stop and resolve the discrepancy rather than assigning a cost at random.
- Determine capital proceeds. Use the AUD market value of the money, property or crypto received at the event time. For a swap or gift, preserve the valuation method and source. Account for eligible incidental disposal costs in the calculation and keep the fee evidence.
- Calculate the cost base. Add the purchase price and eligible incidental acquisition costs for the units disposed of. Do not mix fees from unrelated transfers or other parcels into the figure.
- Subtract cost base from proceeds. A positive amount is a capital gain. If proceeds are not greater than cost base, proceed to the reduced-cost-base test.
- Test a possible loss. Compare proceeds with the reduced cost base. Proceeds below the reduced cost base create a capital loss. If proceeds fall between the cost base and reduced cost base, the event produces no gain and no loss.
- Record the result with its evidence. Store the calculation, valuation, fee treatment and source transaction ID so the number can be reconstructed later.
How to value crypto in Australian dollars
Every event must be expressed in AUD, even when the exchange reports only US dollars or another token. Convert the value at the relevant time and document the exchange rate, pricing source, timestamp and timezone. Use a method that reflects the market in which the transaction actually occurred; do not silently substitute a year-end price for the disposal-time value.
For an exchange trade, retain both sides of the trade, the platform quote and the fee. For an on-chain transaction, keep the transaction hash, wallet addresses and the price source used to translate the token value into AUD. If a token has thin liquidity, a platform error or no reliable quoted price, record how you reached a reasonable value and refer the issue to a tax agent when the amount is significant.

An Australian-resident individual may be eligible for a 50% CGT discount on an asset held for at least 12 months. The holding period and residency requirements must be checked for the particular asset and income year. Assets held for less than 12 months do not receive that discount.

Calculate the undiscounted gains and losses first. Apply current-year and carried-forward capital losses to eligible gains, then apply the discount to any remaining gain that qualifies. Keep the acquisition and disposal dates for every parcel; a one-day difference can change whether the 12-month condition is met. Companies and other taxpayers can have different rules, so do not assume the individual discount applies to every return.
Combining gains, losses and carried-forward amounts
Once each event is complete, prepare an annual schedule:
- Add all current-year capital gains, including gains from swaps and spending.
- Identify current-year capital losses and any unapplied losses carried forward from earlier years.
- Subtract losses from gains in accordance with the applicable CGT ordering rules.
- Apply the 50% discount only to the remaining gain that meets the eligibility requirements.
- Report the resulting net capital gain. If losses exceed gains, report no negative net capital gain and carry the unused net capital loss forward.
Capital losses can generally be used only against capital gains, not salary, interest or ordinary business income. Maintain a running loss register showing the year each loss arose and the amount used or carried forward.
Worked example using the statutory method
Assume an investor buys a parcel for A$4,000 and pays A$100 of eligible acquisition costs. The cost base is therefore A$4,100. The investor later swaps the parcel when its AUD market value is A$6,000 and incurs A$50 of eligible disposal costs.
Using the recorded transaction value and fee treatment, the event calculation starts with the disposal proceeds and subtracts the A$4,100 cost base. If the A$50 fee reduces the proceeds used for this event, the net proceeds are A$5,950 and the preliminary gain is A$1,850. That figure is not the taxpayer’s final tax amount: all other gains and losses must be included, any carried-forward losses applied, and any eligible discount considered. The amounts are illustrative arithmetic, not an ATO example; use your own timestamps, prices and fee records.
Entering the result in myTax
The cited 2024 myTax instructions use these labels:
| Return field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Total current year capital gains | The total of current-year capital gains before the final netting and discount steps required by the return. |
| Net capital gains | The amount remaining after allowable losses and any eligible discount are applied. |
| Net capital losses carried forward to later income years | Unused capital losses when losses exceed the gains that can be applied in the current year. |
Those instructions require a CGT schedule when total current-year capital gains or losses are more than A$10,000. The A$10,000 threshold is tied to the cited 2024 instructions; check the instructions for the income year you are lodging in case labels or thresholds change. Keep your detailed transaction schedule even when myTax asks for only summary amounts.

| Approach | Best fit | Checks before relying on it | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spreadsheet or manual schedule | Small number of trades, one or two wallets, simple sales and swaps, and complete exports. | Confirm every disposal is included, fees are treated consistently, parcels are matched, and AUD valuations are documented. | Low monetary cost but high risk of missed transfers, duplicate transactions or formula errors as volume grows. |
| Crypto-tax software | Many exchanges or wallets, frequent swaps, large transaction volume or a need to reconcile imports. | Check Australian tax-year support, staking and airdrop handling, DeFi coverage, AUD valuation sources, exportable records, audit trail and privacy terms. | Faster reconciliation, but automated classifications and imported prices still need review; subscription cost and data sharing may apply. |
| Registered tax agent | Business indicators, DeFi or staking complexity, mixed personal and investment use, missing records, residency questions or substantial gains and losses. | Ask about crypto experience, record requirements, scope, fees, review of prior returns and how carried-forward losses will be documented. | Higher cost, but professional classification and a review trail can reduce the risk of an incorrect return. |
Whichever method you choose, retain an export of the underlying transactions and a copy of the final calculation. A software-generated number without source records is not a complete tax file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common failure points and how to fix them
Only reporting cash withdrawals
Problem: Coin-to-coin swaps and crypto purchases are omitted because no fiat was withdrawn.
Fix: Reconcile every disposal, including swaps, gifts and spending, against wallet and exchange histories.
Using one year-end price for every event
Problem: A single price ignores the value at each disposal time.
Fix: Convert each event at its relevant time and preserve the source, timestamp and AUD conversion.
Counting a transfer as a sale
Problem: Moving assets between wallets you control is treated as a disposal without checking beneficial ownership.
Fix: Keep sending and receiving addresses and establish whether ownership changed. Seek advice when the transfer involves another person, a service, a trust or a DeFi protocol.
Leaving out fees
Problem: Acquisition and disposal costs are omitted or mixed into the wrong parcel.
Best Value
Fix: Preserve fee records and include only eligible incidental costs in the relevant calculation.
Double-counting staking or airdrop receipts
Problem: A reward is reported as income and its full value is later treated as a second acquisition cost without documentation.
Fix: Record the income event, acquisition date and AUD value once, then use those acquisition details when the received asset is later disposed of.
Applying the personal-use exception automatically
Problem: A coin bought as an investment is later spent and assumed to be exempt.
Fix: Test the original purpose, A$10,000 acquisition threshold and holding history, and retain evidence. Longer holding periods generally weaken a personal-use claim.
Discarding old records after lodging
Problem: Exchange exports or wallet data are deleted even though an amendment or carried-forward loss remains relevant.
Fix: Apply the ATO’s later-of retention rule, keep secure backups and retain records longer when the loss or assessment is still open.
