Apple says this can automatically and privately verify your device and account to bypass many CAPTCHA challenges, but it cannot make every website or app skip verification.
Turn on Automatic Verification
The setting is in the same place on iPhone and iPad. Apple’s current guides use the menu label Sign-In & Security; older instructions may show a different label.

What Automatic Verification does
When a website or app supports the relevant verification mechanism, iCloud can help confirm that the request comes from a legitimate device and account, without asking you to solve a CAPTCHA. Apple describes the feature as private and says it can bypass many challenges—not all of them.

One technology behind this is the Private Access Token. In its WWDC22 presentation, Apple explained that compatible servers can use tokens to verify a client without identifying or recognizing it over time. Safari and WebKit can respond to token challenges automatically when the service supports them. Apple’s presentation described that token mechanism for iOS 16 or macOS Ventura and an Apple ID signed in; those are historical prerequisites for the mechanism described there, not a stated minimum version for the current Automatic Verification menu.
Apple Developer presenter Tommy Pauly noted that “CAPTCHAs can also pose a serious problem for accessibility.” Automatic verification can reduce one kind of access barrier, but it does not remove every challenge or guarantee that every user can access every site.

Why a CAPTCHA may still appear
Enabling the setting does not control a site’s security rules. A particular website, app, browser context, or verification provider may not support the compatible flow or may still require a challenge. The available sources do not establish a universal workaround for persistent CAPTCHAs.

- If the challenge remains, follow the website or app’s prompt to complete verification.
- If verification does not work, contact the site or app’s support.

If you manage a website
A visitor’s iPhone or iPad setting cannot replace the site owner’s anti-bot configuration. As one site-side option, Cloudflare documents Turnstile as a CAPTCHA alternative with managed, non-interactive, and invisible widget modes. Its managed mode determines whether to show a checkbox based on visitor risk. Cloudflare says Turnstile is WCAG 2.2 AA compliant; these are Cloudflare’s claims about its own service, not a guarantee that every site or visitor will avoid a challenge.
