You can buy XRP through a centralized exchange that supports it in your jurisdiction, or through a wallet app that offers purchases via a third-party provider. The key decision comes after purchase: leave XRP in the exchange’s custody for convenience, or withdraw it to a self-custody wallet and take responsibility for its keys and recovery backup. Neither route is risk-free, and availability, fees, withdrawal support, and local eligibility vary by provider.
What you are buying
XRP is the native token of the XRP Ledger. A buyer can purchase it through an exchange and, where withdrawals are supported, send it to a specified XRP Ledger address. The XRP Ledger documentation describes wallets as a way to manage an account and its funds: Crypto Wallets.

Create and fund an account using a payment method the exchange accepts. Follow the exchange’s identity and account requirements.

Place an XRP purchase using the exchange’s current order options. Review the quoted price and any displayed charges before confirming.

Decide whether to leave the XRP in the exchange account or withdraw it to a self-custody wallet. An exchange withdrawal sends XRP to an address you specify; see the XRP Ledger’s Accounts documentation.
Buy through a wallet app’s integrated provider
Some wallet apps offer purchases through third-party services that deliver the purchased XRP to a wallet address. This is still a provider-mediated purchase, not a guarantee of a better price, universal availability, or lower risk. For example, Ledger says its integrated purchase-service availability depends on region; check the provider’s current terms, fees, and delivery details before proceeding: Ledger’s XRP purchase guidance.
Before you send XRP to an exchange or wallet
Use the recipient’s current deposit instructions, not an address or tag copied from an old transaction. Some centralized exchanges require a destination tag or memo to identify which customer should receive a deposit. Enter it exactly when required. If the receiving service requests a tag and it is omitted or incorrect, the deposit may not be credited as intended. Ledger explains this XRP transfer detail in its XRP wallet guidance.

Confirm that the destination is an XRP Ledger address accepted by the receiving service.

Check whether the service requires a destination tag or memo, and include it in the designated field.

Review the address and tag carefully before confirming. A wallet does not remove the risk of sending to the wrong destination.

XRPL.org explains the general custody and wallet distinctions, including hardware isolation and the importance of provider security, in its wallet documentation. Hardware isolation is a security measure, not a guarantee that a device is invulnerable.

How to reduce self-custody mistakes

Set up the wallet using its official instructions and obtain the app or software from a trusted source. A hardware device’s security also depends on the device and software supply chain.

Keep recovery material private and secure. Anyone who obtains it may be able to control the wallet; if you lose it, you may lose the ability to recover access.

Review transaction details on the wallet and confirm the recipient address before signing. Do not approve a transaction you do not understand.

For an exchange deposit, follow the exchange’s XRP-specific instructions and include any required destination tag. For a withdrawal to your wallet, verify the receiving address and the exchange’s withdrawal requirements.

Which option makes sense?

Keep XRP on an exchange if you prioritize ease of trading and accept depending on that platform for custody and access.

Use a software wallet if you want to control the keys yourself and can reliably protect the device, wallet software, and recovery material.

Consider a hardware wallet if you want key information isolated from a connected computer or phone when signing is not underway, and are prepared to manage setup, transaction checks, and backup securely.
No option removes every risk. The choice is between relying on a custodian and taking on the practical responsibilities of self-custody.
