Timber supports and metal purlins need different fasteners; there is no single screw size or layout that suits every corrugated roof.
Start with the material supporting the roof
The screw must suit the substrate it will engage. Identify whether the panels attach to timber or wood-based sheathing, or to steel purlins, before selecting a fastener.

Timber, plywood, or OSB
Use a wood fastener approved for the panel system. For its 7/8-inch corrugated roofing system, S3 Metals specifies #10 woodfast screws for dimensional lumber and #14 woodfast screws for plywood or OSB. The same guide calls for dimensional-lumber screws to penetrate 1 inch into the lumber, and plywood screws to pass 3/8 inch through its underside. These are examples for that system, not universal screw sizes or penetration rules.

Metal purlins
Use a metal-to-metal fastener suited to the purlin thickness and panel assembly. S3 lists Tek screws for its attachment to metal purlins. The New Zealand Metal Roofing Manufacturers Code of Practice gives general guidance of three threads engaged in steel, while directing users to the roofing manufacturer for application-specific recommendations.

Choose screw length by the whole roof assembly
Length depends on the panel profile, support material, and any layers between the panel and support, such as insulation. A screw that is long enough for a bare panel may not reach the required engagement through a thicker assembly. Work from the panel maker’s specification rather than choosing by the word “corrugated” alone.
As general guidance in the New Zealand code context, fasteners should embed 30 mm into timber or engage three threads in steel. Those figures are not a substitute for the exact manufacturer’s instructions or applicable local requirements.

Match the washer and corrosion protection
Use a compatible sealing washer
A roofing fastener needs a washer suited to the panel profile and screw. S3 says roof and wall fasteners in its guide should have EPDM sealing washers; the New Zealand code also calls for profiled washers with an EPDM sealing washer. Washer size and shape can vary with the profile and fixing method, so use the combination specified for your roof rather than assuming one washer fits all.

Account for exposure and material compatibility
Choose fastener material and coating compatible with the roofing and supporting materials, and appropriate to the installation environment. In the New Zealand code context, the stated minimum recommendations are Class 4 fasteners for severe environments and Class 5 for very severe environments. These are not worldwide code requirements; check local conditions, rules, and the roofing manufacturer’s specification.

Follow the panel’s fastening map
Fastener location and spacing depend on the specific panel, support layout, and design conditions. Use the manufacturer’s map for rib or crest placement, purlin rows, laps, edge zones, and any high-wind provisions. For its corrugated panel application, S3 calls for fastening along each rib and to each purlin, with additional fastening in high-wind conditions. Do not apply that pattern to another profile or jurisdiction without confirmation.

Drive each screw perpendicular to the panel and compress the washer enough to make contact without crushing or distorting it. Underdriving can leave the seal ineffective; overdriving can damage the washer. REISSER illustrates EPDM seal damage from overdriving. S3 recommends a depth-sensing nose piece and identifies 2000 rpm for its application guidance; follow the tool settings and installation method specified for the fastener and panel system you are using.

Check these details before buying
- Support: Is the screw designed for timber or wood-based sheathing, or for steel purlins?
- Length and engagement: Does it account for the panel profile and every intervening layer?
- Washer: Is the sealing washer compatible with the screw and roof profile?
- Corrosion protection: Does its material and coating suit the exposure and local requirements?
- System approval: Do the panel instructions specify this fastener, its location, and the fastening pattern?
