To buy Reliance Industries Limited shares, open a demat account and a trading account with a SEBI-registered broker, link a bank account, search for NSE symbol RELIANCE (ISIN INE002A01018), choose delivery or another available equity product, and submit a market or limit buy order. After your purchase, a sell stop-loss is entered below the current market price. A stop-market prioritises execution but can fill below the trigger; a stop-limit gives you a limit on the sale price but can remain unfilled.

What you are buying

Reliance Industries Limited is an Indian listed equity traded on both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE). On NSE, the trading symbol is RELIANCE, and the security’s International Securities Identification Number (ISIN) is INE002A01018. Confirm these identifiers in your broker’s order ticket before sending an order so that you do not select a similarly named instrument, a derivative contract or a different exchange listing.

This is an order-entry guide, not a price forecast or a personal investment recommendation. The article does not set a target price, a stop-loss percentage or a view on whether the shares are attractive. Your decision should reflect your own time horizon, position size, ability to withstand a loss and risk tolerance.

Accounts and checks required before your first order

You cannot buy directly from the exchange. You need an intermediary that can route orders and hold the resulting securities for you.

  • Trading account: Used to place buy and sell orders on an exchange.
  • Demat account: Holds shares electronically after settlement.
  • Bank account: Supplies funds for purchases and receives money from sales, subject to the broker’s permitted banking methods.
  • KYC and identity records: Your broker and depository participant must complete the applicable know-your-customer checks.

Choose a stock broker and depository participant that are currently registered with SEBI. Registration status, account-opening documents, available products, fees, order validity and settlement displays can change, so read the intermediary’s current disclosures before accepting the account agreement. A trading account links your bank funding with the securities custody provided through the demat account; the two accounts serve different functions even when one provider offers both.

Open and fund the accounts

  1. Select the intermediary. Verify the broker’s SEBI registration and that it accepts residents of your jurisdiction. Check whether it provides access to NSE, BSE or both, and whether cash-equity delivery is available.
  2. Complete KYC. Submit the identity, address, tax and bank information requested in the broker’s onboarding flow. Finish any electronic-signature, video or in-person verification steps the intermediary requires.
  3. Link the bank account. Use an account in your name, following the broker’s verification instructions. Do not send money to an unverified third-party account or rely on payment instructions received outside the broker’s authenticated channels.
  4. Activate trading and demat access. Wait until the broker confirms that both order placement and securities custody are active. Note the customer-support route for rejected orders, password resets and account freezes.
  5. Fund the trading account. Transfer the amount you intend to use through a banking channel permitted and displayed by the broker. Keep a buffer for the purchase value and the charges shown in the order preview; the actual charges are intermediary- and investor-specific.

Do not assume that an account opening screen’s “available balance” is identical to withdrawable cash. Brokers can display separate values for funds available to trade, collateral, unsettled proceeds and money on hold for open orders. Use the value identified as available for the cash-equity transaction you are about to place.

Find the correct Reliance Industries instrument

  1. Sign in to the broker’s authenticated website or mobile app.
  2. Use the security search field and enter RELIANCE.
  3. Select Reliance Industries Limited, then verify that the exchange is the one you intend to use.
  4. Cross-check the NSE symbol RELIANCE and ISIN INE002A01018 where the order ticket displays them.
  5. Make sure the ticket is for cash equity rather than a futures or options contract. Derivatives have different expiry, margin and settlement rules.

If the broker lists separate BSE and NSE lines, compare the displayed exchange, market depth and order conditions. The company is listed on both exchanges, but an order submitted on one exchange is not silently transferred to the other. A symbol search result alone is not enough; inspect the full instrument details.

Place the buy order

Choose the product mode

Select the product described by your broker as delivery, cash equity or an equivalent mode if you want the purchased shares credited to your demat account after settlement. Intraday products are intended to be closed according to the broker’s intraday rules and may be squared off automatically; do not select one accidentally when your intention is to hold the shares.

Choose market or limit pricing

Order choice What you enter How it behaves Main consideration
Market order Quantity; no maximum purchase price Seeks execution at the best available prices in the order book when the order reaches the exchange Execution is prioritised, but the final price can differ from the quote you saw, particularly in a fast or thin market
Limit order Quantity and the maximum price you will pay Can execute only at your limit price or a better price Price is constrained, but the order may remain pending or expire without a fill

A displayed quote is not a reservation. Between viewing the quote and submitting the order, other orders can change the available price. A market order therefore does not guarantee the last traded price. A limit order protects the maximum price but does not guarantee that anyone will sell to you at that price.

Review and submit

  1. Enter the number of shares you want to buy. The quantity should be consistent with the amount you can afford if the limit order fills in full.
  2. Choose market or limit and, for a limit order, enter the maximum price per share.
  3. Select the validity offered by the broker, such as a day order. Do not assume that a pending order carries into the next trading session unless the ticket explicitly says so.
  4. Check the exchange, product mode, quantity, displayed price, estimated charges and total funds blocked.
  5. Confirm the order using the broker’s required authentication method.

After submission, open the order book. A market order can show as open, partially filled or complete. A limit order can be pending because the market has not reached your price. Cancelling an unfilled order does not undo trades that already occurred in a partial fill; inspect the filled quantity before cancelling or replacing anything.

Confirm the trade and custody

Check the order book for status and the trade book for executed quantity and price. A filled order may be completed in several executions at different prices. The broker’s contract note or confirmation memo should set out the order and trade details and the applicable charges. Reliance’s shareholder referencer advises investors to obtain this document within 24 hours. Save it with the trade date and your own notes about why you entered the position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shares may appear in the demat account only after the applicable settlement process. The exact settlement display and timing depend on the exchange and intermediary, so use the broker’s current settlement information rather than treating an order-book fill as immediate custody. If the trade book says filled but the security is not visible when the broker’s stated settlement window has passed, contact the broker and retain the order ID, trade confirmation and contract note.

How a sell stop-loss works on NSE

A protective sell stop-loss is normally placed below the current market price. You specify the quantity to protect and a trigger price; where supported, you also specify a limit price. NSE keeps the order in its stop-loss book while the last traded price is above the trigger. When the last traded price reaches or falls below that trigger, the order is released to the regular order book for execution.

The trigger is an activation condition, not a guaranteed sale price. The order still has to interact with available bids after activation. In a rapidly falling market or a gap down between trading prices, the next available bid can be materially below your trigger.

Enter a stop-loss after buying

  1. Open the position or holdings view. Use the broker’s authenticated portfolio, positions or order-entry screen and select the Reliance Industries holding you intend to protect.
  2. Start a sell order. Choose the broker’s stop-loss, SL, protective-stop or equivalent order type. Interfaces vary; one broker support example places this under a position’s “Square Off” action and then asks for “SL,” but that path is not universal.
  3. Confirm the product and exchange. Use the same cash-equity holding and exchange as appropriate. Avoid selecting an intraday square-off ticket if you are protecting delivery shares.
  4. Enter the quantity. Enter all or part of the settled or otherwise sellable quantity. If some shares are locked, pledged or unsettled, the broker may reject that portion.
  5. Enter the trigger price. For a sell stop, the trigger is generally below the current market price. Read the ticket’s rule for whether the trigger is activated on the last traded price, a bid or another reference.
  6. Choose the execution style. Select stop-market if the ticket offers only a trigger and market execution, or stop-limit if it also requests a limit price.
  7. Enter a limit price when required. For a sell stop-limit, the limit should be set with the direction of a sale in mind. A price move below your limit can leave the order open instead of executing.
  8. Set validity and review. Confirm whether the order is valid for the session or another period supported by the broker. Review trigger, limit, quantity, estimated charges and any warning about overnight or corporate-action handling.
  9. Submit and monitor. Record the order ID. Before activation it should appear as a pending stop order; after activation it may appear as a market or limit order in the regular book. Check the status rather than assuming that placing the stop means the shares have been sold.

Stop-market versus stop-limit

Decision factor Stop-market Stop-limit
What happens at the trigger Converts to a market sell order Converts to a limit sell order
Likelihood of execution Usually higher when bids are available, but never guaranteed Lower if the market moves beyond the limit; the order can remain unfilled
Price certainty No guaranteed minimum sale price Sets the minimum price at which the limit order may execute
Gap and slippage exposure Can fill substantially below the trigger in a gap or fast decline Reduces execution below the limit, but leaves you exposed to an open position if no bid meets the limit
When an unfilled position matters More suitable when exiting is the priority and variable execution price is acceptable More suitable only when refusing a lower price is more important than completing the exit
Availability and rules Depends on the broker’s labels, trigger methodology and product support Depends on the broker’s labels, price bands, trigger methodology and product support

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s investor bulletin states that the stop price is not the guaranteed execution price for a stop order and that the execution price may deviate significantly. The same practical warning applies here: a stop-market protects an instruction to seek an exit after activation, not a promise that your sale will occur at the trigger.

NSE’s stop-limit examples show a trigger and a separate limit price for a buy stop; for a sell stop, the directional relationship is reversed. Always follow the exact relationship displayed by your broker’s ticket and its exchange documentation rather than copying a buy example mechanically.

How to set a sensible trigger without using a universal percentage

There is no stop-loss distance that is correct for every Reliance position. A trigger that is too close can be activated by ordinary price noise; one that is too far can permit a loss larger than you can accept. Consider these inputs before entering a number:

  • Volatility: A more volatile share can move through a tight trigger during normal trading.
  • Position size: The same rupee movement produces a larger financial loss when you hold more shares.
  • Time horizon: A short-term trading plan and a long-term holding may use different exit rules.
  • Risk tolerance: Decide in advance what loss you can absorb without changing the plan emotionally.
  • Market conditions: Gaps, news and illiquidity can produce fills away from the trigger regardless of the distance chosen.

Write down the maximum acceptable loss in currency terms, then check whether the proposed quantity and trigger are consistent with it. This is a planning exercise, not a guarantee: the actual stop-market fill can be worse, and a stop-limit may not fill at all.

Stop-market example

Suppose your hypothetical position is 100 shares and the current price is ₹1,000. You enter a sell stop-market trigger at ₹950. If the last traded price reaches or falls below ₹950, the order is released as a market sell. If the next available bids are ₹944 and ₹942, the trade can execute around those bids rather than at ₹950.

Stop-limit example

Using the same hypothetical position, you could enter a trigger at ₹950 and a limit at ₹945, subject to the broker’s required direction and price rules. Once triggered, the order can sell only at ₹945 or better. If the market gaps directly to ₹940 and no buyer offers ₹945 or more, the order can remain open and you still hold the shares.

Broker-specific rules to verify

Order terminology is not identical across platforms. Before submitting, confirm:

  • Whether the broker calls the order “SL,” “stop-loss,” “stop,” or another label.
  • Which price activates the trigger and whether the rule changes between NSE and BSE.
  • Whether the product supports stop orders for delivery holdings, overnight positions or only intraday trades.
  • How trigger and limit prices must be related for a sell stop-limit.
  • Permitted tick sizes, price bands, minimum quantities and maximum order quantities.
  • Whether the order is valid for one session, a stated date or another period.
  • How the broker handles corporate actions, trading halts, market holidays, pledged shares and unsettled holdings.
  • What charges, taxes and statutory levies the order preview displays for your account and jurisdiction.

If the broker’s screen conflicts with a general explanation, follow the broker’s current order specification and ask support for written clarification before submitting. Save screenshots or PDFs of the confirmation when the platform provides them.

Common mistakes and how to recover

Wrong instrument or exchange

Cancel an unfilled order immediately and verify the full instrument details. If it has filled, do not place an opposite order impulsively; record the trade ID and contact the broker to understand the available correction process.

Trigger entered above the market for a sell

A sell stop is normally below the current market. A trigger entered on the wrong side can be rejected or behave differently from your intention. Recheck the displayed last traded price and the broker’s validation message before resubmitting.

Assuming a stop guarantees the trigger price

Review whether you selected stop-market or stop-limit. For a stop-market, prepare for slippage. For a stop-limit, monitor for an unfilled order and decide in advance what action your plan permits if the market continues lower.

Protecting more shares than are sellable

Check settled, free quantity rather than the headline holding balance. Shares can be unavailable because of unsettled purchases, pledges or another open instruction. Reduce the stop quantity or resolve the restriction through the broker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving an old stop after changing the position

When you sell part of a holding, add shares or replace an order, inspect open orders and adjust the protected quantity. Two stops can compete for the same shares, or an old stop can sell more than intended if the broker permits it.

Not checking the order after a trading halt or gap

A stop can remain pending, trigger later or become subject to exchange price limits. After an unusual move, inspect the order book, trade book and available quantity rather than relying on a push notification.

Record keeping and follow-up

Keep the order confirmation, trade confirmation, contract note and any stop-order amendments. The contract note should show the order and trade details and charges; obtain it within the timeframe your intermediary states, and Reliance’s shareholder referencer specifically advises obtaining it within 24 hours. Reconcile the quantity in the contract note with the trade book and later with your demat statement.

For personalised decisions about position sizing, acceptable loss or whether a stop is appropriate, consult a currently registered investment adviser and verify the adviser’s registration, location, fees and disclosures. A broker’s order-entry help is not the same as personalised investment advice.

Practical checklist

  • SEBI-registered broker and depository participant verified.
  • Trading, demat and bank accounts opened, linked and active.
  • NSE symbol RELIANCE and ISIN INE002A01018 confirmed.
  • Correct exchange and cash-equity product selected.
  • Quantity, market or limit choice, validity and estimated charges reviewed.
  • Order and trade confirmations saved.
  • For the stop: sell quantity, trigger, stop-market or stop-limit choice and limit price checked.
  • Broker-specific trigger, validity and sellable-quantity rules understood.
  • Contract note obtained and reconciled within the broker’s stated timeframe.

Bottom line

Buy Reliance Industries shares through a SEBI-registered broker using the verified NSE symbol RELIANCE and ISIN INE002A01018, then confirm the execution and contract note. A sell stop-loss sits below the market until its trigger is reached. Choose stop-market when completing the exit is more important than a precise price, and stop-limit only when you accept the possibility that the position will remain open. In either case, verify the broker’s current rules before submitting and never treat the trigger as a guaranteed execution price.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
