Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can buy cryptocurrency through a Coinbase account by creating and verifying the account, adding an eligible payment method, and confirming a purchase after reviewing its order preview. There is no single Coinbase fee or payment method that applies to everyone: availability, costs, and timing depend on your location, account, asset, and transaction. Check the preview shown in your account before you submit.
Before you buy: create and secure your Coinbase account
This guide covers buying through a Coinbase account, not swapping assets in the separate Coinbase Wallet app or using a third-party on-ramp. Coinbase’s new-customer guide outlines the setup process:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Create an account and provide the personal and country information requested.
- Complete identity verification. Coinbase says verification usually takes minutes, but timing can vary.
- Add a payment method available to your account.
- Set up two-step verification (2FA). Coinbase says it is required to help secure your account, assets, and information.
How to buy crypto on Coinbase
- Select Buy (on mobile, the entry point may be Buy & sell, then Buy).
- Enter the amount you want to spend. Minimum purchase amounts vary by asset and payment method.
- Choose or confirm the payment method under Pay with.
- Choose or confirm the cryptocurrency you want to buy.
- Select Review order. Check the amount you will pay, the amount of crypto you will receive, the fee, and the quoted price, including any spread.
- Select Buy now only if the details are correct. If they are not, go back and change the amount, asset, or payment method before confirming.
Coinbase’s buying guide describes this account purchase flow. Available labels and options can change, so use the choices displayed in your signed-in account.
What Coinbase charges for a purchase
Do not assume a fixed fee percentage. Coinbase calculates fees when an order is placed, and the amount can depend on the payment method, order size, market conditions, jurisdiction, asset, and other costs involved in facilitating the transaction. Fees can differ even for similar transactions, and Coinbase says its published fee information does not apply in every region or remain fixed.

A simple buy quote also includes a spread—the difference between the market price and the price Coinbase offers. It is part of the quoted price, rather than necessarily appearing as a separate fee. Coinbase says the spread can vary, including between similar transactions.
The order preview is the practical figure to use: it shows the total amount payable, including applicable fees and spread, before you confirm. Review it immediately before buying, and keep the transaction record or receipt for your records. Coinbase explains its fee calculation and preview in its fees disclosure.

Payment methods: availability and tradeoffs
Coinbase payment options depend on your country and account. Its US payment-method guide lists ACH bank transfers, debit cards, and wire transfers for US customers. For bank methods, Coinbase requires the bank account to belong to you and the name to match your Coinbase account.

| Method or group | What to consider | Availability and timing |
|---|---|---|
| ACH bank transfer (US) | Can fund your Coinbase account in advance. Coinbase may place holds that restrict when funds can be withdrawn or sent. | US method; your available-to-send or cash-out timing is shown before processing. |
| Debit card or direct wire (US) | May not affect withdrawal availability in the same way as ACH when there are no account restrictions; this does not guarantee instant availability. | US methods; account-specific restrictions and timing still apply. |
| SEPA, cards, and digital wallets (EMEA examples) | Buy eligibility and settlement time differ by method and country. | Coinbase’s regional table lists SEPA at 1–3 business days and some card or wallet options as instant in specified markets. |
Coinbase explains holds and payment availability, including that the available-to-send or cash-out timing is shown before processing. Security, compliance, operational requirements, and geography can also limit services. Use the methods offered in your own account rather than assuming a method listed for another region will work for you; Coinbase outlines those regional and account restrictions.

- Total cost: Compare the amount due and the crypto amount shown in the preview, not a fee estimate from another purchase or region.
- Payment method: Confirm it is eligible for a direct buy in your country and that any account or name-matching requirements are met.
- Timing: Distinguish when the buy completes from when the resulting funds can be sent or cashed out; holds may apply.
- Limits and restrictions: Check any purchase minimums, limits, or account-specific notices presented in the flow.
- Asset and amount: Verify the selected cryptocurrency and the order details before choosing Buy now.
Fees, spreads, supported methods, settlement timing, and interface labels can change. Coinbase’s disclosure and the preview in your account are the relevant sources for the transaction you are about to place. Buying cryptocurrency carries financial risk; this purchase walkthrough is not investment advice and does not predict performance.
