If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number now; in the United States, call 911. Use an in-app emergency feature only if it is safe and does not delay getting help. A rider can end a trip, and a driver does not have to stay in a dangerous situation. Once safe, report what happened to the platform.
What should I do if my Uber or Lyft driver makes me feel unsafe? Do not get into a car that does not match the app. During a trip, trust your judgment: call for emergency help if needed, leave when you can do so safely, and report the incident afterward.

Before you get into a rideshare
- When possible, wait in a safe place until the app says the driver has arrived.
- Match the license plate, vehicle make and model, and driver photo to the details in your app. Do not enter if they do not match.
- Uber suggests asking, “Who are you here to pick up?” so the driver confirms your name instead of you volunteering it first.
- When possible, sit in the back, wear your seat belt, and share your trip status with someone you trust. Uber says its trip-sharing feature can show the driver’s name and photo, license plate, location, and estimated arrival time. See Uber’s rider safety tips.
If you are a rider and feel unsafe during the trip
Get help first
If you face immediate danger, call your local emergency number directly. The US Uber and Lyft pages reviewed direct users to call 911. If it is safe and available, you can also use the app’s emergency feature, but do not delay a direct call to navigate menus.

End the ride or leave if it is safe
Uber says riders can end a ride at any time if they feel unsafe. If you can safely exit, move away from the vehicle; a populated, well-lit place may be a safer choice. Do not escalate a confrontation or put yourself at risk to collect evidence. Lyft also advises riders to contact emergency services in an emergency and report safety incidents afterward.
What should I do if my rideshare passenger makes me feel unsafe?
If a passenger’s behavior creates immediate danger, call your local emergency number. Lyft’s driver guidance says to call 911 in an emergency and to put personal safety first. Leave an uncomfortable or unsafe place when you can do so safely; you are not required to remain in a dangerous situation.

Lyft advises drivers to stay calm, keep their voice low, and avoid verbal or physical confrontation. Treat de-escalation as an option when it is safe—not as a reason to stay near a threat. Lyft also describes an in-app Emergency Help flow through ADT. Once you are safe, report the incident to the platform. Lyft says its Safety Team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Use the platform’s reporting route and give a factual account. If available and safe to share, include the trip, time, location, and what happened. Do not delay getting to safety in order to make a report.

- Uber: Its help page accepts reports of uncomfortable or inappropriate behavior through the app. Uber identifies unwanted physical contact and verbal aggression as disallowed conduct. How app safety features differ by location
These are platform-described support routes, not guarantees that an alert will prevent harm or work in every situation. The reviewed instructions are primarily US-focused; app labels and availability can change. Look for the current Safety or Emergency area in your app, and call your local emergency number in immediate danger.

Lyft also says it monitors for unusual activity, such as long stops or route deviations, and may contact a rider with Smart Trip Check-In. This is a platform description, not a guarantee that every unsafe situation will be detected.

Choosing an emergency route

If you are evaluating a tool, check what it does in your region, whether it connects by voice or text, what trip or location details it shares, and how to report an incident afterward. In an immediate emergency, contact local emergency services directly when possible.
