Does my 9-year-old have to send Roblox a video selfie?
Not simply to play Roblox. The age-check requirement applies to chat features, according to Roblox’s January 7, 2026 announcement. Roblox says parental consent is required for users younger than nine to access chat, so a nine-year-old is not covered by that under-nine rule.

How Roblox’s age-check options work
Roblox Support describes two routes. Facial age estimation analyzes a facial image and video and places the user in an age group. The other route is government-ID verification.
| Option | Information supplied | Purpose and correction route |
|---|---|---|
| Facial age estimation | A facial image and selfie-style video | Estimates an age group. If the estimate is wrong, Roblox lists ID verification as a correction route; a linked parent can also change a child’s birthday once after estimation. |
| Government-ID verification | Government ID and selfie, as described in Roblox’s privacy notice | Verifies age or identity. Roblox Support lists “Continue with ID” as an alternative to facial age estimation. |
Roblox Support names Persona as the provider currently used for facial age estimation. The listed age groups are 5–8, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21 or older. The available routes and steps may depend on Roblox’s current instructions and account circumstances.

What Roblox says about privacy and accuracy
Roblox says the images and video used for facial age estimation are deleted immediately after secure processing. Its privacy-policy help page likewise says the selfie is deleted after facial age estimation.

That statement is specific to age-estimation media. Roblox’s separate Biometric and Facial Media Privacy Notice describes identity verification as a different process: Persona may review face geometry from an ID and selfie, Roblox may access images held by Persona for training, product improvement, and compliance, and Persona deletes biometric data within 30 days after collection unless law requires longer retention. These descriptions should not be treated as one blanket promise that all images or data are instantly deleted.

Roblox reports that its age-estimation models had a mean absolute error of 1.4 years for users younger than 18, citing testing by the UK Age Check Certification Scheme. This is a reported average for that population, not a guarantee for an individual child. In Associated Press reporting, Roblox chief safety officer Matt Kaufman said the system can estimate ages within one or two years for people roughly ages five to 25 and described ID or parental consent as ways to address a disputed estimate.
What parents can do
- Check whether your child is trying to access chat; the age-check requirement is tied to chat, not general play.
- Review Roblox’s current Support instructions and decide whether to use facial age estimation or the listed ID option.
- If the estimate appears wrong, review Roblox’s correction options, including ID verification and the one-time birthday change available to a linked parent.
- Discuss online safety and chat settings with your child, and review Roblox’s parental controls.

Are all Roblox selfie images immediately deleted?
Roblox says facial age-estimation images and video are deleted immediately after secure processing. Its separate privacy notice describes other handling and retention for identity verification, so the deletion claim should not be generalized to every process or data type.
What if Roblox estimates my child’s age incorrectly?
Roblox Support lists ID verification as a way to address an incorrect estimate and says a linked parent can change a child’s birthday once after estimation. Roblox chief safety officer Matt Kaufman also described ID or parental consent as correction routes in comments reported by the Associated Press.
