How to Buy a 10-Year Treasury Note and Understand Its Risks

A practical guide to buying a 10-year Treasury note at auction or in the secondary market, with clear explanations of bid types, coupon and yield, reopenings, taxes, and the risks of selling before maturity.

You can buy a 10-year U.S. Treasury note directly at auction through TreasuryDirect with a noncompetitive bid, through a bank, broker, or dealer, or in the secondary market after issuance. The note pays fixed interest every six months and returns its principal at maturity, but it is not risk-free: its market price can fall when yields rise, inflation can reduce the value of its payments, and selling through TreasuryDirect is subject to an operational holding period.

What a 10-year Treasury note is

A Treasury note is a marketable U.S. government security with a fixed term. Notes are issued with two-, three-, five-, seven-, and 10-year maturities. The 10-year version makes 20 semiannual interest payments over its life, followed by one principal payment at maturity.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The coupon rate is set when the note is auctioned. The coupon is applied to the note’s face value, so the scheduled interest dollars are fixed for a conventional note even though the note’s market price can change afterward. Treasury securities are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, which addresses the issuer’s payment commitment; it does not remove market-price, inflation, liquidity, or reinvestment risk.

Choose where to buy

TreasuryDirect: the direct noncompetitive route

TreasuryDirect is the U.S. Treasury’s official application for buying and holding marketable Treasury securities. For a new 10-year note or a reopening, an individual investor can place a noncompetitive bid by specifying the dollar amount and agreeing to accept the auction’s resulting yield. A properly submitted noncompetitive order is designed to receive the requested amount, up to the applicable limit, provided the order and payment meet the offering requirements.

This route is straightforward when your priority is obtaining the security rather than choosing a minimum acceptable yield. TreasuryDirect does not turn your order into a price-shopping exercise: the auction determines the yield and price for accepted bids.

Bank, broker, or dealer: noncompetitive or competitive bidding

A bank, broker, or dealer can submit a noncompetitive bid for you, and eligible institutions can also submit competitive bids. The provider’s account rules, cutoff time, settlement process, and any applicable charges are specific to that provider, so confirm those details before ordering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A competitive bid states the yield you are willing to accept. Treasury compares competitive bids with the auction result. Your order may be filled in full, filled in part, or rejected if your specified yield is not accepted. Competitive bidding is therefore a way to control the minimum yield you will accept, but it gives up the certainty of receiving the entire requested amount.

Secondary market: buy an already-issued note

After issuance, marketable Treasury notes trade in the secondary market through financial institutions and dealers. You pay the prevailing market price rather than the original auction price. The quoted price may be above or below the note’s face value, and the remaining term may be less than 10 years.

A secondary-market purchase is useful when you need a particular maturity date or want to invest without waiting for the next auction. It also introduces a price decision that does not exist in the same form for a noncompetitive auction order: your return depends on the price you pay, the remaining cash flows, and whether you hold to maturity or sell earlier.

Check the offering before placing an order

Treasury’s auction calendar lists original 10-year note auctions in February, May, August, and November, with reopenings also scheduled. Treat those months as a planning guide, not as a substitute for the live calendar. The offering announcement for the specific security supplies the controlling details, including the auction date, issue date, maturity date, and other terms.

Distinguish an original issue from a reopening:

  • Original issue: the first auction of a note with its stated maturity date.
  • Reopening: an additional auction of an existing note. It uses the same CUSIP, maturity date, and coupon payment dates as the original issue, but its issue date and usually its price differ.

Because a reopening occurs later, it can have a shorter remaining life even though it matures on the same date as the original note. Accrued interest can be included in the reopening’s price and then returned as part of the first regular interest payment. Read the offering terms and the order preview so you know whether the amount being debited includes accrued interest.

How to buy a 10-year note at auction

Step 1: Select the security and route

  1. Find the relevant 10-year note or reopening on Treasury’s auction calendar and read its offering announcement.
  2. Choose TreasuryDirect if you want to place a noncompetitive bid directly, or use a bank, broker, or dealer if you need competitive bidding or prefer that institution’s account and settlement process.
  3. Confirm the purchase amount is at least $100 and is expressed in $100 increments.

Step 2: Decide between bid types

  • Noncompetitive: enter the amount you want and accept the yield determined by the auction. This is generally the simpler choice for a long-term investor who wants the note rather than a particular yield threshold.
  • Competitive: enter the yield you will accept through a bank, broker, or dealer. The auction can allocate all, part, or none of the order, depending on where your yield falls relative to accepted bids.

Step 3: Submit and fund the order

Follow the provider’s displayed cutoff and payment instructions. Review the security description, maturity date, bid type, dollar amount, and funding account before confirming. Do not assume a 10-year label means exactly 10 years remain if the order is for a reopening.

Step 4: Review the auction result

After Treasury announces the result, check the allocation, price, yield, and amount actually charged. A noncompetitive order should show the amount awarded if the order was valid and within the limit. A competitive order can show a partial allocation or no allocation. For a reopening, check whether accrued interest affected the debit and how it will be handled in the first regular interest payment.

Coupon, price, and yield are different numbers

The coupon rate determines the interest paid on the note’s face value. Yield to maturity measures the return implied by the price you pay, the coupon cash flows, and the principal received at maturity, assuming the note is held to maturity and payments are made as scheduled.

Treasury’s pricing relationship is inverse:

  • If the market yield to maturity is higher than the note’s coupon rate, the note generally trades below par, or below face value.
  • If the market yield is lower than the coupon rate, the note generally trades above par.

At auction, Treasury determines the accepted price and yield through the bidding process. In the secondary market, price is set by prevailing market conditions. Two notes with the same face value can therefore require different purchase amounts, and a buyer who pays above or below par can have a yield that differs from the coupon.

For a reopening, the coupon remains the one established for the original issue, while the later purchase price reflects current yields and the time remaining until the shared maturity date. That is why a reopening can have the same coupon and maturity as the original note but a different price and yield.

What happens if you sell before maturity?

You can sell a marketable Treasury note before maturity through the secondary market, but the sale price is not guaranteed. When market yields rise, existing fixed-coupon notes generally become less attractive, so their prices tend to fall. When yields fall, their prices generally rise. The exact change depends on the note’s remaining term, coupon, market conditions, and the price available from the buyer.

If you sell for less than you paid, you realize a loss even though the U.S. government may still pay the note’s full principal at maturity. Holding to maturity removes the need to accept a market sale price, but it does not remove inflation or reinvestment risk. A direct TreasuryDirect purchase also has an operational access constraint: TreasuryDirect states that a newly purchased marketable security generally must be held for at least 45 calendar days before it can be transferred or sold. The condition does not apply when the purchase uses proceeds from reinvesting a maturing security.

The risks to evaluate before buying

Interest-rate and market-price risk

The fixed coupon does not make the market value fixed. If you may need the money before maturity, estimate how a price decline would affect your plan rather than assuming face value will be available on demand. A note with a longer remaining term is generally more sensitive to yield changes than one nearing maturity, although market pricing is not determined by term alone.

Inflation and purchasing-power risk

The coupon dollars and scheduled principal of a conventional note are nominal amounts. If consumer prices rise faster than expected, those future dollars buy less. The issuer can make every payment on time while the investment still loses purchasing power in real terms.

Reinvestment risk

Interest arrives every six months. If you plan to reinvest those payments, the available rate at each reinvestment date is unknown today. Your eventual return can therefore differ from a simple calculation that assumes every coupon is reinvested at the original yield.

Liquidity and access risk

Marketable notes can be sold in the secondary market, but a sale depends on an available market price. TreasuryDirect’s 45-calendar-day holding rule for most newly purchased marketable securities can also matter if an emergency requires access soon after purchase. Money needed for near-term expenses should not be committed without accounting for both the operational restriction and the possibility of a sale below your purchase price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Auction allocation risk

Competitive bidders do not control the final allocation. If the specified yield is too low relative to the auction’s accepted yields, the order can be rejected; an order near the cutoff can be filled only partially. A noncompetitive bid avoids that allocation uncertainty within the applicable limit, but it accepts whatever yield the auction sets.

Tax risk and record keeping

Treasury’s general guidance says note interest is taxable federally and exempt from state and local income taxes. That is not individualized tax advice. Your tax filing can depend on residence, account type, ownership, and other circumstances, so retain purchase, interest, sale, and maturity records and consult a qualified tax professional when your situation is complex.

Issuer credit versus investment risk

Treasury describes its securities as backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government and says interest and principal payments are guaranteed to be paid on time. That is a statement about the issuer’s obligation. It does not promise that your purchase price will remain stable, that inflation will not erode returns, that a secondary-market buyer will offer your desired price, or that future coupon payments can be reinvested at a particular rate.

Conventional notes versus 10-year TIPS

Readers primarily worried about inflation may compare a conventional 10-year note with a 10-year Treasury inflation-protected security (TIPS). TIPS principal adjusts with inflation or deflation, and its interest amount can change because the coupon is applied to the adjusted principal. This addresses a different risk than a conventional note’s fixed nominal principal and coupon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision factor Conventional 10-year note 10-year TIPS
Principal Fixed nominal principal payable at maturity, subject to the Treasury’s payment obligation Adjusted for inflation or deflation over the term; the adjustment can move down as well as up
Interest dollars Coupon is fixed at auction and applied to the note’s face value, producing scheduled semiannual dollars Interest is paid semiannually, but the dollar amount can change as adjusted principal changes
Price and yield Price and yield are set at auction or in the secondary market and move with nominal market yields Price and yield are set at auction or in the secondary market and can also move before maturity
Main exposure Inflation can reduce purchasing power; market price can fall if yields rise Inflation adjustment can help with purchasing power, but deflation, market-price movement, and reinvestment considerations remain
Best fit depends on Whether you want known nominal coupon dollars and can tolerate inflation risk Whether reducing inflation exposure is more important and you can accept changing payments and market value

TIPS are not a risk-free substitute. Their market prices can fall, and their principal can adjust downward as well as upward during the term. Compare the price and yield available today, your expected inflation exposure, and whether you intend to hold to maturity before choosing between the two.

How to avoid fraudulent “private Treasury” offers

Use TreasuryDirect or a recognized bank, broker, or dealer. The Treasury Office of Inspector General states: “We do not issue securities through private placements, nor do we license financial entities or individuals to act as intermediaries to sell marketable Treasury securities.” A claim that someone has exclusive access to a private Treasury note offering is inconsistent with that warning.

Verify the security, maturity date, bid type, payment instructions, and account ownership through the channel you selected. Do not send money to an unverified intermediary because an advertisement promises a special yield, guaranteed trading profit, or access unavailable through public auctions.

A practical decision checklist

  • Time horizon: Can you leave the money invested until the note matures, or might you need to sell?
  • Cash-flow preference: Do fixed nominal payments every six months fit your plan?
  • Inflation tolerance: Would loss of purchasing power be unacceptable without an inflation adjustment?
  • Route: Do you want a simple noncompetitive auction bid, a competitive yield instruction, or a particular maturity in the secondary market?
  • Order size: Is your amount at least $100 and in $100 increments?
  • Offering type: Is this an original 10-year issue or a reopening with less time remaining?
  • Liquidity: Have you accounted for TreasuryDirect’s holding restriction and the possibility of selling below your purchase price?
  • Taxes: Have you considered federal taxation and the state-and-local exemption in your own filing situation?
  • Records: Will you retain the order confirmation, price, yield, accrued-interest information, interest payments, and any sale details?

Bottom line

A 10-year Treasury note is purchased either at auction or in the secondary market. TreasuryDirect offers a direct noncompetitive auction path; a bank, broker, or dealer can provide noncompetitive or competitive bidding; and the secondary market lets you buy an already-issued note. The note’s fixed coupon and Treasury’s payment commitment make the cash flows predictable in nominal terms, but the investment can still lose market value before maturity, lose purchasing power to inflation, expose coupon reinvestments to future rates, and restrict early access after a TreasuryDirect purchase. Buy only after matching the route, maturity, bid type, and risk profile to when you will need the money.
