A sitemap supplies candidate URLs; it does not guarantee that every entry is a unique page you want to capture.
1. Find and inspect the WordPress sitemap
On WordPress.com, try adding /sitemap.xml to the site’s address—for example, https://example.com/sitemap.xml. WordPress.com documents this path for its generated XML sitemap (WordPress.com sitemap help). Other WordPress sites can use different configuration, so inspect the site’s actual sitemap rather than assuming the same path or structure. WordPress core includes sitemap functionality, but the available sitemap files depend on the site’s setup (WordPress developer reference).

Open the XML and check whether it contains page locations directly or is a sitemap index listing child sitemap files. If it is an index, fetch each listed child sitemap and collect its page locations. A sitemap index and its child files are part of the discovery process; do not mistake the index URLs themselves for the pages to screenshot. 2. Decide which URLs belong in the batch
Before opening a browser, define the scope: for example, published pages only, or pages and posts, excluding attachment pages and other unwanted content types. Confirm that each candidate belongs to the expected site, then deduplicate URLs. When the same content is reachable through multiple addresses, prefer the canonical URL; Google recommends including the preferred URL for search results in a sitemap (Google Search Central).

Filtering is a project decision, not a universal sitemap rule. Keep a manifest that maps each selected URL to its output filename. This makes it possible to trace a screenshot back to its page and to retry only failed URLs.
3. Install Playwright and prepare a capture script
The following Node.js example uses Playwright to visit a list of sitemap URLs and save full-page PNGs. It assumes you have already parsed the sitemap files and placed the selected URLs in urls. It is an illustrative starting point, not a sitemap parser or a tested end-to-end WordPress workflow.

In a production batch, create the output directory in the script, derive sanitized names from URL slugs or retain numbered names alongside a manifest, and make sure filename collisions cannot overwrite earlier captures. Playwright infers screenshot type from the file extension; its screenshot API also documents output path, image type, scale, masks and screenshot styling options (Page API).
4. Choose screenshot size and page readiness
Viewport or full page
A default screenshot captures the visible viewport. Set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page, as shown in the script. Full-page images can be very tall, so use them when completeness matters and check that their file size and readability fit the review task. CSS pixels or device pixels
Choose scale deliberately. CSS scale produces one output pixel per CSS pixel; device scale preserves the device-pixel ratio and may produce larger images. For compact review files, CSS scale may be appropriate; for detail, use device scale and account for larger output. The Playwright Page API documents the scale option.
Wait for the site’s actual content
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' is a starting point, not proof that asynchronous content, fonts, or images have settled. Define readiness for the specific site: you might wait for a page-specific selector, a bounded delay, or another signal that indicates the content you need is present. Lazy-loaded images may require scrolling or site-specific behavior before capture. Use a timeout and log failures so a page that never becomes ready is not silently treated as successful. There is no single readiness rule that fits every WordPress theme and plugin combination.

5. Run a sample, then scale up
Capture a small set first, including a long page and any page with interactive or delayed content. Inspect the files for missing images, cookie banners, layout changes, redirects and unexpected errors. Then run the full URL list. For larger batches, limit concurrency to avoid overloading the site or your machine, and retain per-URL success or failure information so you can retry specific pages rather than recapturing everything.

The sitemap and generic browser API do not determine those site-specific choices. If you need repeatable comparisons, keep browser settings, viewport, scale and readiness rules consistent across runs.
6. Troubleshoot common batch failures
- The sitemap URL returns an error or no useful XML: Check the site’s configured sitemap location. On WordPress.com,
/sitemap.xmlis documented; other installations may differ. If the file is an index, follow its child sitemap locations. - The batch includes the wrong pages or duplicates: Review the selected content types, validate hosts, deduplicate addresses, and prefer canonical URLs when the same content has multiple addresses.
- Navigation times out: Check that the URL is reachable from the machine running Playwright. Use a bounded timeout appropriate to the site, log the failed URL, and retry it separately rather than letting one failure end the entire batch.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: The page may still be rendering when capture begins, or content may load only after scrolling. Add a site-specific readiness condition and inspect lazy-loaded content on a sample page.
- A file is missing or overwritten: Confirm that the destination directory exists and that filenames are unique. Keep the source URL in a manifest so filenames can be audited.
- Images are unexpectedly huge: Check whether you chose full-page capture and device scale. Use viewport capture or CSS scale when those settings better match the review need.
- Cookie dialogs, popups or chat controls obscure the page: Decide whether those elements are part of the test. For local Playwright capture, use site-appropriate interactions or screenshot styling and masks where suitable; the Playwright API documents these screenshot options.
