For a 1080p video recorded at 29.97 fps, use YouTube’s published 1080p at 30 fps guidance as the closest documented target: set a constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and the codec-appropriate bitrate. YouTube does not publish a separate 29.97 fps row. Confirm what frame rate your encoder actually sends, then check picture, sound, and stream health in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room before going live.
Recommended settings for 1080p at 29.97 fps
YouTube’s encoder settings table labels its relevant row “1080p @30fps.” It does not separately specify fractional frame rates such as 29.97 fps, so these are the closest published bitrate recommendations—not a promise that every encoder will handle a 29.97 fps source identically. YouTube says resolution and frame rate are detected automatically by default; if you need to select the resolution manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution. YouTube’s encoder settings provide the current technical guidance.

| Setting | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame-rate category | 1080p at 30 fps, the closest category YouTube documents for a 29.97 fps source. Check the encoder’s actual output. |
| H.264 bitrate | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended. |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC bitrate | 4 Mbps minimum; 10 Mbps recommended. |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate). |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Video basics | Square pixels, progressive scan, 2 B-frames, 1 reference frame, and CABAC. |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit. |
| Streaming protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit. |
| Stereo audio | AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz; 128 kbps recommended. |
| 5.1 surround audio | AAC at 48 kHz; 384 kbps recommended. |
The bitrate values are YouTube’s published input (ingestion) recommendations. They do not guarantee a particular result for every video, encoder, or connection. Your available upload bandwidth must exceed the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused as headroom; see its streaming tips.

YouTube’s help pages describe stream setup and encoder settings, but do not provide one universal procedure for playing or looping a prerecorded file. The exact media-source controls depend on the encoder you choose. Follow that encoder’s documentation for file playback, output frame rate, and looping, then use this YouTube workflow to connect and verify the feed.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Schedule or create the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and schedule a stream or create one. Scheduling can create an upcoming watch page that viewers can share and use to set reminders. See YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions.
- Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder. YouTube describes the key as the password and address that let the encoder send its feed. Treat it as a credential; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
- Configure the encoder and file source. Set the output canvas to 1920 × 1080 and configure the video codec, bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, and audio to match the recommendations above. Use the encoder’s own instructions to select the prerecorded file and determine whether it sends 29.97 fps or converts it to another rate. Do not assume that a source file’s frame rate is the same as the encoder’s output.
- Send the feed and inspect the preview. Start the encoder early enough for Live Control Room to receive the feed. Check framing, motion, audio, and audio/video sync in the preview; for a scheduled broadcast, use Go live when ready.
- Monitor the broadcast. Watch Live Control Room’s stream-health messages while transmitting. Test with the same file, representative movement, and audio you plan to use on air. YouTube advises testing before the event and monitoring audio and video; its streaming tips also cover advance setup, backup-encoder failover where relevant, checking a local archive, and verifying playback on the watch page and mobile.
Preflight checks before viewers arrive
- Confirm the encoder is actually outputting 1080p and identify its output frame rate rather than relying only on the file’s 29.97 fps label.
- Check the encoder’s codec-specific bitrate against YouTube’s 1080p30 row and verify CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval.
- Make sure your upload capacity can carry the total bitrate while preserving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Verify the stream URL and key, and confirm that the preview appears in Live Control Room.
- Play a representative section with motion and sound. Check for framing problems, missing or distorted audio, and sync issues before going live.
- Check the channel and watch page, including playback on a mobile device. If you rely on a backup encoder, test failover in advance.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
| Symptom | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The preview does not appear | Stream URL, stream key, and whether the encoder is sending a feed. | Re-enter the connection details from the correct Live Control Room stream. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder. |
| The output is not 1080p or the frame rate is unexpected | Encoder output settings, not just the source file’s properties. | Set the intended output resolution and check the encoder’s actual frame-rate output. YouTube’s published row is 30 fps, not a separate 29.97 fps setting. |
| Stream health reports a problem or motion looks poor | Codec, bitrate, CBR setting, keyframe interval, and available upload bandwidth. | Compare the output with the appropriate YouTube row, keep the keyframe interval at 2 seconds (and no longer than 4), and leave the recommended upload headroom. Test with the same content before the event. |
| Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync | Encoder audio input and output format, source playback, and the Live Control Room preview. | Check the audio codec, sample rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s guidance; replay the file and verify sync before going live. |
These checks narrow down common configuration issues, but YouTube does not give one diagnosis that applies to every dropped-frame, judder, or sync problem. Use the encoder’s logs and documentation alongside Live Control Room’s stream-health information.
Copyright and prerecorded-content considerations
A prerecorded file is still broadcast as a live stream, so confirm that you have the rights needed for the video, music, and any other included material. A stream key and correct encoder settings do not grant content rights or guarantee that a stream complies with YouTube’s policies. Review YouTube’s current rules for live content and monetization before broadcasting, especially if you plan to loop or reuse material.
