YouTube Live Stream Bitrate Fluctuating in OBS: Causes and Fixes

Rising dropped frames usually point to an unstable connection or a bitrate your upload cannot sustain. Use OBS and YouTube stream health to isolate the cause and test the right fix.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If OBS’s dropped-frame counter is rising, the stream connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Check OBS’s connection status and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health, then compare your bitrate with stable upload capacity. Lower the bitrate or resolution if needed, test another ingest server, and investigate Wi-Fi, VPN or network software, drivers, and router connectivity. If OBS shows no dropped frames but viewers report buffering, diagnose playback or delivery separately.

First identify which bitrate problem you have

“Bitrate fluctuating” can describe different symptoms. OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection indicator help distinguish a connection problem at the broadcaster’s end from buffering reported only by viewers.

  • OBS dropped frames are increasing, or its connection indicator is yellow or red: OBS is having trouble sending data to the ingest server. Its guidance says dropped frames occur when the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate; if too many are lost, OBS may disconnect. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting
  • Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames: the problem may be in viewer delivery or playback rather than the computer-to-ingest connection. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, and viewers’ playback conditions can differ. OBS Streaming Connection Troubleshooting

OBS’s connection guide, dated September 30, 2024, puts it plainly: “If you experience dropped frames or intermittent disconnections while streaming, there is a network issue between your computer and the remote stream ingest server.” That points to the connection as a first line of investigation, not proof that any single device or setting is at fault.

Diagnose in this order

  1. Check OBS. Open the status area in OBS and watch the dropped-frame count and connection indicator while the issue occurs. A count that keeps rising is more useful than a momentary connection warning.
  2. Check YouTube Live Control Room. Review stream health and the timestamped messages. Warnings about incorrect bitrate or format can indicate that the stream settings do not match the selected ingest configuration. YouTube: Fix live stream issues and YouTube: Live stream error messages
  3. Check the local output. Look at OBS’s encoder preview and make a local recording. If the preview or recording also looks or sounds wrong, investigate sources, encoder errors, and CPU load. If local output is healthy while the stream falters, focus on outbound connectivity. YouTube: Fix live stream issues
  4. Measure upload capacity. Run an upload-speed test, ideally while other household or office traffic is quiet, then compare the result with the total stream bitrate. A speed test is a snapshot, not a guarantee of sustained capacity; a shared network can leave less bandwidth for the streaming computer.
  5. Compare settings with capacity and YouTube’s guidance. Check that the bitrate is suitable for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you selected. If the connection cannot sustain the target, reduce video bitrate and, if necessary, resolution.
  6. Test the network path. Try another ingest server, then compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if available. Check VPN and security software, network-prioritizing utilities, network drivers, and modem/router connectivity. Change one factor at a time where practical so you can tell whether it helped.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists the following H.264 examples. They are published recommendations—not a measurement of your connection and not a guarantee that it can sustain the chosen bitrate.

H.264 output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These figures are for H.264. YouTube publishes separate guidance for AV1 and H.265; consult its encoder settings for live streaming for the exact codec and output you use. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and checking stream health during a test that includes representative audio and movement.

YouTube advises leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused: “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” YouTube: Streaming tips. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, but neither figure replaces checking what your connection sustains over time. Capacity can vary, and other devices share the connection. Pick a bitrate that remains stable in practice while meeting YouTube’s applicable settings.

Fix the cause that matches the symptoms

Bitrate is too high for available upload capacity

Lower OBS’s video bitrate and test again. If it still drops frames, reduce the output resolution or frame rate and retest. A lower bitrate can stabilize delivery, but it trades away some image detail; choose a setting that both fits the connection and suits the content. Avoid setting the stream so close to measured upload capacity that ordinary network variation pushes it over the limit.

Wi-Fi or the local network is unstable

If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, test with Ethernet when possible. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable. A cable is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix: router, access point, ISP, or wider network congestion can still affect the route. If Ethernet improves the stream, investigate wireless signal quality and competing traffic; if it does not, continue checking the route and equipment.

The ingest server or route may be involved

Test a different ingest server in OBS and compare the dropped-frame count under similar conditions. Improvement can suggest that the original path was involved, but one comparison does not prove the root cause. If changing servers makes no difference, look at bitrate, local networking, and software instead.

VPN, security software, network utilities, or drivers interfere

OBS lists VPNs, firewall or antivirus interference, network-prioritizing utilities, and outdated network drivers among possible causes. Examples of prioritizing software it names include Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software. Temporarily isolate a suspected cause only when it is safe to do so; restore security protection afterward, and use a targeted exception if the vendor supports one. Check for current network drivers from the computer or adapter manufacturer.

Congestion is intermittent

OBS has a fallback option called Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta) under Settings → Advanced → Network. It can lower bitrate to reduce dropped frames during congestion, but it does not repair the underlying connection and may reduce video quality. Treat it as a continuity aid when you cannot resolve the connection issue, not as a substitute for stable upload capacity. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting

Local encoding or stream configuration is wrong

If the preview or recording is impaired, check OBS’s encoder errors and CPU load, confirm sources are behaving correctly, and try another encoder if needed. If YouTube reports a format or bitrate error, verify that your configured output matches the selected ingestion resolution; YouTube notes an exception for variable-resolution entrypoints. A clean local recording with an unhealthy stream points you back toward network delivery rather than the recorded output. YouTube: Fix live stream issues and YouTube: Live stream error messages

Test the change before a high-stakes stream

  1. Use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, and representative audio and motion you plan to stream.
  2. Watch OBS’s dropped-frame count and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health during the test.
  3. Change one setting or network condition at a time, then compare whether dropped frames and YouTube warnings improve.
  4. If outbound testing continues to show connection problems after local checks, contact your internet service provider. YouTube: Fix live stream issues
