Bootstrap pagination is a list of links inside a navigation landmark. In the Bootstrap v5.3 documented pattern, use <nav>, a <ul class="pagination">, list items with .page-item, and links with .page-link. The examples below follow the v5.3 documentation; that documentation does not establish whether v5.3 is the newest release as of October 2026.
Build the basic pagination structure
Use a separate page URL for each link and make the navigation label describe the content it controls. For search results, “Search results pages” distinguishes the control from other navigation on the page.

Mark the current page
Apply .active to the current page’s .page-item and aria-current="page" to its link. If the current page is rendered as a non-interactive <span>, Bootstrap’s v5.3 documentation says aria-current may be omitted. See Bootstrap’s v5.3 pagination documentation.

Handle previous and next at the boundaries
Bootstrap’s .disabled class changes a control’s appearance and pointer interaction, but the class alone does not settle keyboard behavior. Add the necessary behavior to prevent activation, or render a disabled control as a non-interactive <span>. Check with a keyboard that a disabled previous or next control cannot still be activated. Bootstrap’s v5.0 pagination guidance covers navigation labels and icon accessibility.
Make previous and next icons accessible
If a link uses a symbol such as « or » instead of visible words, give the link an accessible name such as “Previous” or “Next,” and mark the decorative symbol with aria-hidden="true". Do not make the glyph the only way to identify the link.

</a>Adjust pagination size and alignment
Bootstrap v5.3 provides size classes and flexbox utility classes for common layout adjustments:
- Use
.pagination-lgor.pagination-smon the pagination list for a larger or smaller control. - Use
.justify-content-centeror.justify-content-endon the list to center it or align it to the end.

Check accessibility in the finished page
- Give the
<nav>a descriptive label so its purpose is clear among other navigation landmarks. - Verify that the active state identifies the page actually being displayed.
- Test disabled controls with a keyboard as well as a pointer.
- Check the contrast of the actual colors against their backgrounds; Bootstrap warns that some default palette combinations may have insufficient contrast on light backgrounds.
Bootstrap’s accessibility documentation notes that a project’s accessibility depends substantially on its author’s markup, styling, and scripting. Using Bootstrap classes does not by itself guarantee an accessible pagination control.
