1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSpotify’s old method of syncing computer-stored Local Files to a phone by downloading a playlist over the same network is now described as a legacy feature that may not work as intended. A playlist appearing on your phone does not mean its local audio files were copied there. For reliable playback, put each file on the phone and enable local-audio access in Spotify.
Why Spotify Local Files don’t sync to your phone
Spotify’s desktop setting for Local Files lets the desktop app find audio in selected computer folders. It does not, by itself, copy those files to a phone. Spotify Community’s Local files on iOS article describes the older same-network playlist-download method for syncing local files across devices as a legacy feature that may no longer work as intended. It does not give a date for when that behavior changed or explain its technical cause.

That means connecting both devices to the same Wi-Fi network is not a dependable fix. Spotify’s current documented approach is to make the audio file available on the phone itself, then allow Spotify to access local audio.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Check whether the file is available on each device
| Where you want to play the file | What to do | What the setting or step accomplishes |
|---|---|---|
| Computer | Turn on Show Local Files and select the folders containing your audio. | Makes files in those folders visible to Spotify on that computer. |
| iPhone or iPad | Turn on Local audio files and place the audio in the Spotify folder, or transfer it using a documented computer method. | Makes the file available locally on the iOS device. |
| Android phone | Turn on Local audio files and download or transfer the audio onto the device. | Makes the file available locally on the Android device. |
Spotify’s Local files instructions cover these device-specific steps. A playlist entry can refer to a file that Spotify can access on your computer; it is not proof that the audio itself is on the phone.

Make Local Files visible in Spotify on your computer
- Open Spotify’s desktop settings.
- Scroll to Library and turn on Show Local Files.
- Under Show songs from, enable the folders you want Spotify to scan, or choose Add a source to select another folder.
- Open Your Library > Local Files and check whether the tracks appear.
Spotify needs permission to read the folders where the audio is stored. If tracks are missing, check that the selected source folder is the one that actually contains them and that the app can access it.
Enable local audio access on your phone
- Open Spotify on the phone and go to Settings > Apps and devices.
- Switch on Local audio files.
- If your phone asks for permission to access files or media, allow it in Spotify or the device’s settings.
Then use the method for your device to put the audio on the phone.

Transfer audio to an iPhone or iPad
Using the Files app
Copy or move the audio into On My iPhone > Spotify. If the file is in a browser or another storage app, download it first, then place it in the Spotify folder. Spotify’s instructions refer to this iOS device folder; a file that remains only in cloud storage or in a computer folder has not been copied to the phone.
From a Mac using Finder
Connect the iPhone or iPad to the Mac, open its device view in Finder, and drag the file into Spotify under Music or Files. Spotify also documents a Universal Clipboard option when the devices use the same iCloud account; follow the steps in its Local files support article.

From Windows using iTunes
Connect the iOS device by USB, open iTunes, select the device, and drag the audio file into Spotify under Music or Files. After transfer, check that Spotify can access local audio on the phone.
Transfer audio to an Android phone
First enable Local audio files in Spotify. You can download an audio file on the phone using a file-management or storage app, or transfer it from a computer. For Spotify’s Windows USB-transfer steps:

- Connect the phone to the computer with a USB cable; Spotify notes that a cable may be needed.
- Unlock the phone and allow data access if prompted.
- Open the phone in the computer’s file-transfer window and copy the audio file onto the device.
- Eject the phone safely when the transfer is complete.
If the playlist appears but its local tracks won’t play
Treat the playlist and the audio file as separate things. Spotify’s older same-network playlist-download route is not a reliable current transfer method, so check that the file is physically available on the phone and that Local audio files is enabled. If you only see the playlist entry, transfer the audio using the instructions for iOS or Android above.

Spotify says mobile users cannot download an individual song directly; a song can be added to a playlist and that playlist downloaded. Its Listen offline instructions describe catalog downloads, not copying a file from your computer.
- Spotify Connect lets you control playback on another device. Its device-discovery and same-Wi-Fi guidance concerns playback control, not transferring audio files. See Spotify’s Spotify Connect article.
If files still don’t appear or play
Spotify’s Local Files guidance recommends these general checks. They may help with local-file access, but Spotify does not say they restore the legacy cross-device playlist-sync method.
Quick Recap
- Update Spotify and the phone or computer’s operating system.
- Remove the local files from the playlists where you added them, restart the steps for adding files, and check again.
- As a last resort, follow Spotify’s clean-reinstall instructions. Reinstalling means downloaded Spotify music and podcasts must be downloaded again.
