Start every serious Enshrouded settlement by crafting a Flame Altar from the Manual Crafting tab and placing it near the center of the area you intend to develop. The altar claims the base, makes construction and terrain reshaping permanent inside its protected area, and sets the limit for future rooms, farms, paths and towers.
After the altar is secure, choose a site that is easy to read and expand, shape the voxel terrain, build a simple structural shell, then add storage, crafting, NPC housing and farms. Decoration works best as a series of passes: establish a material palette and good circulation first, add architectural depth second, and finish with lights, plants, furniture and small props only after the layout has survived a full walk-through.

The Flame Altar is the boundary between a temporary construction project and a dependable home. Craft one through the Manual Crafting tab, place it, and use the protected area it defines as your planning envelope. Permanent building and terrain edits belong inside this area; anything outside it should be treated as temporary until you have confirmed that the altar can cover the intended expansion.
Place the altar close to the center of the settlement rather than at the edge of the first building. A central position gives rooms, workshops, paths and farms a more even share of the available footprint and leaves fewer awkward corners when the settlement grows. Before you commit to foundations, look at the area you expect to use later, not only the first house. Include a main approach, a storage-and-crafting core, NPC rooms, agricultural space, stairs or ramps, and a lookout or rooftop route if those are part of the plan.

When to upgrade the altar
Use the altar’s current footprint as a hard design constraint. When a planned wing, farm or circulation route will not fit, upgrade the altar before laying more permanent foundations. Expanding a finished building around an undersized boundary usually creates cramped paths and forces you to move decorative work. An early boundary check costs little; rebuilding a detailed room costs much more.
Choose a site before you place foundations
Site selection determines how much work your voxel tools will require and how pleasant the finished base is to navigate. Walk the prospective area and judge it as a settlement, not merely as a flat patch for one building.
High ground and visibility
High ground improves sightlines across the settlement and can provide useful glider-launch positions. A raised site also makes a tower, roofline or lookout feel purposeful. Check that the approach remains practical: a dramatic cliff is less useful if every trip to storage requires an awkward climb.
Terrain that is workable, not merely flat
Relatively level terrain reduces the amount of excavation and filling needed for foundations, roads and farms. Gentle slopes can add character and allow terraces, retaining walls or a split-level village, but account for the extra stairs and retaining structures before committing. The voxel system lets you excavate, raise ground and stack blocks, so an imperfect site can be corrected; a highly irregular site simply shifts more of the early project into terraforming.
Roads, danger and approach routes
A position near a road can make the base easier to reach and easier to understand, especially when you are designing a settlement that others may tour. Keep the immediate building area outside obvious Shroud danger so entrances, work areas and paths are not pressed against a hazardous edge. Leave enough approach space for stairs, ramps and a readable entrance rather than building directly on the route.
Plan night-time readability
Imagine the site after dark. Mark where the entry path, altar, workshops, NPC rooms and farm edges will be visible. Lighting is not an afterthought: an unlit stair or turn can make a well-designed base feel confusing. Reserve positions for lamps or other light sources while you block out the shell, then connect them into a continuous path-lighting scheme during the final pass.

How to claim and lay out a base
- Open Manual Crafting and make a Flame Altar. The altar is the prerequisite for a permanent base area, so do this before terraforming or placing a serious foundation.
- Stand near the center of the intended settlement. Consider the rooms and outdoor spaces you will add later, not just the first workshop. A central placement leaves more balanced options for expansion.
- Place the altar and inspect the usable footprint. Check that the planned entry, storage, crafting stations, NPC housing, farms and circulation loop can fit inside the protected area.
- Reserve expansion space. Keep at least one side of the initial build open for a future wing, terrace, tower or farm. Do not consume every edge with decorative walls on the first day.
- Upgrade before the boundary becomes a problem. If the next useful room or route cannot fit, upgrade the altar before extending the structure. Treat the new footprint as a fresh planning pass.
Once the altar is in place, test a simple route from the entry to the altar, storage, crafting stations, NPC rooms, farms and the main exit. This walk reveals whether the chosen center actually works. It is easier to shift an empty shell than to relocate a furnished house.
Shape the terrain and build a stable shell
Enshrouded’s voxel construction supports both broad earthworks and fine architectural detail. Use that range in stages rather than trying to sculpt a finished castle immediately.

Stage 1: establish levels
Excavate high spots and raise low areas until the main floor, path and farm levels are clear. If you want a split-level settlement, decide where the level changes occur and connect them with stairs or ramps. Retaining walls make those changes legible and prevent the terrain from looking like an accidental cut.
Stage 2: block out the footprint
Lay out the shell of the main building with simple walls, floors and a roof. Mark door positions, window bands and the route between rooms before adding trim. A compact rectangle is a useful first block even if the final exterior will gain wings, towers or irregular corners.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStage 3: protect circulation
Keep a clear loop through the important spaces: entrance to storage, storage to crafting, crafting to NPC rooms and farms, then back to the exit or lookout. Avoid placing a decorative wall, chest cluster or planter in the only route. A base that looks good from one angle but requires repeated detours will feel unfinished.
Stage 4: add vertical structure
After the ground floor works, stack blocks for upper floors, towers, parapets and roofs. Vary wall depth and roof height to prevent a large structure from reading as one flat box. Build stairs and railings as part of the shell so their proportions can be corrected before decoration.
Put storage and crafting at the functional core
Storage should remain close to crafting stations. The purpose is not only convenience; a short, obvious route makes the whole base easier to use and easier for visitors to understand. Put the highest-use storage within a few steps of the workshop, then place less frequently accessed storage farther away if the layout needs it.
Compact workshop arrangement
For a solo progression base, group storage, crafting stations and the main work surface in one compact building or courtyard. Keep the altar and primary entrance nearby, with a direct route to farms and NPC rooms. This arrangement minimizes walking, simplifies lighting and leaves fewer exposed paths to maintain. Its trade-off is a denser appearance, so use wall recesses, shelves, signs or changes in floor height to organize the visual clutter.
Distributed work areas
A larger settlement can give each craft function a themed room or building. Put the forge-like work area, agricultural space, storage building and living quarters along a readable path rather than scattering them randomly. This layout creates stronger visual storytelling and makes a base feel like a village, but it uses more of the altar’s footprint and increases travel time. Give every building a clear entrance and a visible connection to the central route.
Keep the altar visible enough to orient yourself
The altar does not have to dominate the composition, but it should be easy to find from the main path. A small plaza, raised platform or framed doorway can make it a dependable landmark. If you hide it behind several decorative rooms, visitors and future you lose a useful point of orientation.

House recruited NPCs deliberately
Recruited NPCs need beds and sheltered work areas. Plan their rooms as part of the original blockout rather than adding beds wherever a spare corner remains. A simple housing wing, a row of small rooms around a courtyard, or separate themed cottages can all work if each has shelter and a clear route to its work area.
Beds and workspaces
Group beds with the associated sheltered work areas, leaving enough room to move around furniture. Keep doors and paths unobstructed; a bed pressed against a workstation may technically fit while making the room difficult to read and use. If several NPCs share a building, use partitions, changes in floor level or distinct furnishings to give each area a clear identity.
Connect living quarters to the core
NPC rooms should be close enough to the altar, storage and main paths that the settlement feels coherent. A short covered walkway can connect a housing wing without forcing every room into the workshop. For a village layout, place living spaces along the same lit route as the craft buildings so the base reads as one settlement rather than isolated props.
Use comfort and shelter as functional design
Shelter and comfort furnishings contribute to the Rested buff, so decoration has a gameplay purpose as well as a visual one. Treat living spaces as complete rooms: provide cover, arrange compatible furniture together and leave usable walking space around it.
Group furnishings and decorations where people live instead of scattering every attractive object across work areas. A comfortable room can combine beds, seating and decorative pieces, while the adjacent corridor remains clear for movement. This separation prevents the common mistake of filling a workshop with objects that look inviting but block storage access or crafting routes.
Decorate in deliberate passes
Decorating after the shell and routes are stable prevents wasted effort. Work from large visual decisions to small ones.
Pass 1: choose a material language
Select a consistent palette for the main structure, roof, trim and paths. A limited palette makes additions look intentional, while one contrasting material can mark doors, corners or important landmarks. Apply the palette to more than one building so a distributed village feels related.
Pass 2: add depth to walls and roofs
Flat walls become more convincing when doors and windows are framed, corners have visible structure and some sections project or recess. Vary roof height over major rooms and use overhangs or stepped profiles to break up a long silhouette. Add retaining walls where the terrain changes so the architecture appears to hold the site rather than float on it.

Pass 3: make movement visible
Build stairs, railings, bridges and threshold details before placing small props. These elements explain how the settlement is used and protect visitors from dead ends. A path should widen at an entrance or plaza and narrow only where the building itself requires it.

Place lights at the entry, stairs, corners, workshops, NPC housing and farm edges. Aim for a chain of visible points rather than isolated bright spots. Path lighting keeps the settlement readable at night and helps distinguish the main loop from decorative side spaces.
Pass 5: furnish living and public spaces
Add beds and work furniture to NPC rooms, then use seating, tables, plants, banners and signs to give courtyards and halls a purpose. Repeat a few motifs—such as the same trim or banner placement—so separate rooms feel connected without becoming identical.
Pass 6: add small props sparingly
Small clutter supplies scale and personality, but it should support the room’s function. Put useful-looking objects near workshops, agricultural details near farms and readable signs at junctions. Leave enough empty surface that the important objects remain visible.
Pass 7: remove what does not help
Walk the finished base and delete duplicate props, blocked doorways and lights that compete with landmarks. A final subtraction pass often improves the result more than adding another decorative item.

Both layouts can work inside a claimed area. Choose by how you value travel time, atmosphere and future expansion.
| Layout | Strengths | Costs and risks | Best planning priorities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact workshop | Short storage-to-station walks, simple lighting and efficient solo progression | Denser rooms can feel cluttered and offer less separation between functions | Keep the core readable, reserve an expansion side and use vertical detail to avoid a box-like silhouette |
| Distributed village | Themed buildings, stronger visual storytelling and a more tour-like experience | Uses more build area and increases travel between functions | Connect every building with lit paths, preserve sightlines and keep enough open space for later additions |
Compare either plan by storage-to-station distance, comfort, shelter, expansion room, sightlines and decorative labor. The altar boundary is the hard constraint: an attractive concept that exceeds it must be reduced, upgraded or moved before permanent construction continues.
Plan expansion before the base looks finished
Leave room for the next useful addition even when the first structure feels complete. Expansion space can be a clear side yard, an unfinished terrace, a reserved farm strip or a path that ends at an intentionally empty platform. This is better than surrounding the first house with walls and props that make every later extension disruptive.
Test an expansion by walking its proposed route from the existing core. Check whether a new room would block a window, cut off a farm, narrow a stair or push a path outside the protected area. Move structural walls while the layout is still simple; do not wait until every surface has been furnished.
Best Value
Design for night navigation and visitors
A readable base has a visual hierarchy: the entry is recognizable, the altar or central plaza is easy to locate, and storage, workshops, housing and farms can be distinguished without opening menus. Use changes in roof height, material, path width and lighting to create that hierarchy.
Enshrouded’s adventure-sharing feature gives you a reason to design for visitors if you want to publish a build. Provide a clear starting point, a continuous route and a few deliberate viewpoints such as a courtyard, tower or rooftop. Avoid forcing a visitor through private storage corners or dead-end corridors merely to show decoration. A tour-friendly base explains itself through landmarks and paths.
Fix common building problems
Permanent edits are not behaving as expected
Confirm that the Flame Altar is placed and that the work is inside its protected area. If you began terraforming or foundation work before claiming the site, stop and verify the boundary before investing more time. Recenter or upgrade the altar if the intended settlement extends beyond the current footprint.
The route feels cramped after furnishing
Remove or relocate furniture, storage and decorative props along the main loop first. If the problem remains, move the wall or doorway rather than narrowing the path further. Re-test the complete entry-to-storage-to-workshop-to-housing route before restoring detail.
Recommended Free Tools
The village looks disconnected
Connect buildings with a consistent path material, repeated lighting rhythm and visible landmarks. Give each structure a clear entrance and align major doors with the route. A distributed layout needs stronger circulation cues than a compact workshop.
The base is attractive but hard to use at night
Light stairs, junctions, entrances and the edges of farms before adding more decorative lights. Keep enough spacing between sources that the eye can follow the route. Remove lights that create glare without helping navigation and redirect them toward steps and doorways.
NPC rooms feel like storage closets
Separate beds from work areas with simple partitions or changes in floor height, provide shelter, and leave a usable path to the door. Add comfort furnishings after the room’s movement works. If several NPCs share one structure, repeat a clear room pattern so the housing wing is easy to understand.
Quick Recap
A practical build checklist
- Craft the Flame Altar from the Manual Crafting tab before permanent construction.
