Treat them as separate jobs: BirdNET’s ranked suggestions are candidates to check, while Gemma is a writing aid—not an authority on which species you heard. The Trail Notebook project’s indexed description presents this workflow as local and says identification can continue without Gemma, with the journal note skipped; its repository page could not be verified, so its setup details and current compatibility remain uncertain.
Can I identify birds offline?
Yes. BirdNET Live documents on-device inference using an ONNX model, so after installation it can analyze sound without an internet connection. Its documented features include live identification, field-survey modes, analysis of audio files, session review, and export. The app’s workflow is to record, review ranked suggestions and confidence scores, then decide whether to contribute observations. BirdNET Live documentation

Offline inference is distinct from the Trail Notebook workflow. An indexed description of the Trail Notebook project describes a laptop setup using local open-weight models, BirdNET for acoustic identification, and Gemma for journal writing. It says identification continues if Ollama is unavailable and the note is skipped. Because the repository page could not be opened, the operating system, model and software versions, dependencies, hardware requirements, and maintenance status are not established.
Does BirdNET Live require an internet connection?
BirdNET Live’s FAQ says inference runs on-device using the ONNX model, so a connection is not needed for that analysis once the app and model are installed. However, the app has separate optional connected features. Its privacy policy, updated August 6, 2026, says map tiles, reverse geocoding for place names, and weather snapshots are opt-in and disabled by default on a fresh install. If enabled, those features send their respective requests to third-party providers; they are not part of the acoustic inference itself. BirdNET Live FAQ · BirdNET Live privacy policy

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The policy says BirdNET Live performs audio analysis and species identification entirely on-device and does not transmit audio to external servers. Do not assume that statement also describes Trail Notebook or every tool in a Gemma/Ollama setup. Local inference can reduce transmission of recordings, but check each tool’s own network behavior and settings before relying on it for privacy.
How to keep identification and journaling separate
- Record the observation. Note the time, place, habitat, weather, and what you actually noticed: song pattern, direction, movement, or visible features. Keep direct observations distinct from guesses.
- Review BirdNET’s candidates. Look at the ranked suggestions and confidence scores rather than treating the top result as a confirmed identification.
- Verify when needed. Compare the sound and any visual evidence with a reliable field reference. Be especially cautious with rare or unexpected species.
- Ask Gemma to organize, not identify. Provide your observations and the BirdNET suggestions as clearly labeled inputs. Ask for a concise journal entry that preserves uncertainty and does not add facts you did not supply.
- Keep the original record. Save your raw notes and the model’s output separately, so you can correct the prose or identification without losing what you observed.
A useful prompt can be as simple as: “Turn these field notes into a short journal entry. Keep my observations separate from BirdNET’s unverified suggestions. Do not add species, behaviors, or conditions that are not in the notes.” If Gemma is unavailable, keep the field notes and skip the generated narrative; the project’s indexed description says acoustic identification does not depend on the language model.

How accurate is the identification?
A BirdNET result is a model suggestion, not proof that a species was present. BirdNET Live says accuracy depends on recording quality, distance, background noise, and species. Its FAQ describes detections above 70% confidence as generally reliable guidance, not a universal accuracy guarantee, and recommends visual verification for rare species. The app page advises getting closer to a singing bird when possible, holding the device steady, and reducing traffic and other background noise. Cornell BirdNET app page

Can I analyze existing recordings?
Yes. BirdNET Live documents file analysis as well as live identification and field-survey sessions. The FAQ lists supported formats and other file-analysis details; check it for the current requirements before preparing a batch of recordings. Its session review and export features can help preserve results for later reference. These capabilities do not establish that every recording will produce a reliable identification.

Live neural-network inference can use substantial phone battery, and BirdNET Live’s FAQ flags battery use as a practical consideration. A portable USB power bank is an optional way to extend a long session; no specific capacity or device requirement is established. If you want a record independent of generated prose, keep brief notes on paper or in a separate notes app, then decide later whether to turn them into a polished entry.
