DisplayPort No-Signal? Check These Causes and Fixes First

A monitor’s DisplayPort no-signal message can come from the selected input, cable, computer output, or a model-specific compatibility setting. Check each part in order.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your monitor says “No DP signal” or “No DP signal from your device,” it is not receiving a usable picture on the selected input. Check the monitor’s power, reseat the DisplayPort cable at both ends, select DP in the monitor’s on-screen menu, and make sure the computer is awake and sending output. If that does not restore the picture, test the cable, port, monitor, and computer one at a time.

What a DisplayPort no-signal message means

The message means the monitor is not receiving a usable video signal through the input it is currently using. Dell’s P2421 user guide, for example, shows the wording “No DP signal from your device.” The message identifies the problem at the display connection; by itself, it does not tell you whether the cause is the monitor input, cable, computer output, or a compatibility setting.

Start with the checks that are quickest and easiest to reverse. Avoid changing drivers or compatibility settings until the basic connection and input have been verified.

Check power, cable, and selected input

Confirm the monitor and computer are on

Make sure the monitor has power and the computer is running. A sleeping computer may not be sending a signal; wake it with a key press or mouse movement.

Reseat the DisplayPort cable

Unplug and firmly reconnect the cable at both the monitor and the computer. Inspect it for visible damage. If you have another compatible cable or an available video port, try it to check whether the original cable or port is at fault. Dell recommends swapping the video cable when possible as a way to rule out a faulty connection.

A known-good cable is a useful diagnostic when the existing cable may be damaged or unreliable, but replacing it is not a guaranteed fix for every no-signal problem.

  1. Try a different compatible DisplayPort cable. If the monitor works with the replacement, the original cable is suspect.
  2. Try another available video output. A picture from another output points attention to the original port or its configuration.
  3. Connect the monitor to another computer. If it works there, focus next on the original computer’s output, display settings, or hardware-specific driver support.
  4. Run the monitor’s supported self-test or follow its official diagnostic instructions. If it remains blank across devices, consult the monitor’s model-specific guidance or support channel.

What a monitor self-test can show

Dell describes a basic self-test for supported monitors: disconnect the video cables while leaving the monitor’s power connected. A working display should show a message such as “No Signal,” “No Cable,” or “No DP Cable.” This checks that the monitor can display its own diagnostic message; it does not prove that the computer, cable, or DisplayPort input is functioning correctly. Follow the instructions for your exact model, because available diagnostics differ.

Check DisplayPort compatibility settings only for the relevant model

Some monitor and graphics-card combinations may require a particular DisplayPort version setting. Dell’s P2423DE guide says that when the connected computer’s GPU supports DisplayPort 1.2, the monitor should be set to DP 1.2 mode; that model is factory-set to DP 1.4. Dell directs users to change the setting in that monitor’s OSD.

This is a model-specific example, not a universal setting or fix. Check your monitor’s own guide before changing its DisplayPort version; do not assume the same menu option or fallback applies to another display.

When to look at drivers or BIOS

If the monitor, cable, and input checks do not resolve the problem, consult the computer maker’s official support instructions for the exact computer and operating system. Dell recommends checking its driver and BIOS update pathway for some display problems, but a software update is not established as the cause or fix for every no-signal message. Start with the hardware-specific instructions rather than a generic driver utility.

Use the result of each test to choose the next step

Selecting DP restores the picture The monitor had been set to another input. Leave the monitor on the correct input or select it when changing sources.
A different cable or port restores the picture The original cable or port may be faulty. Continue using the working connection and inspect the component that failed the test.
The monitor works with a second computer The original computer’s output, display settings, or hardware-specific software may be involved. Check its display settings and official support guidance.
The monitor shows its self-test message but no computer picture The monitor can display its diagnostic message, but the video path still needs checking. Recheck the active input, cable, computer output, and model-specific compatibility guidance.
No picture appears across tested devices The monitor or its input may need model-specific diagnosis. Follow the manufacturer’s diagnostic instructions or contact its support channel.
