Track AI search visibility as a set of separate signals—not one score. Measure whether a brand is mentioned, whether its pages are cited, how Google and Bing report impressions or citations on their own AI experiences, and whether attributable visits lead to outcomes. A sampled answer check can help you monitor ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity, but it is not a universal ranking or a census of what those systems show.
As of October 2026, the first-party reporting described by Google and Microsoft covers specific Google Search and Discover features and Microsoft-supported AI experiences. It does not establish a single dashboard spanning ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Keep each platform, metric and denominator distinct.

What AI search visibility metrics can—and cannot—tell you
AI answers create several different measurement questions: Does an answer mention your brand? Does it cite your website? How many people saw a Google AI feature containing your content? Did anyone click through, engage or convert? No one metric answers all of them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use three kinds of evidence side by side: platform reporting, repeatable checks of sampled prompts, and your own analytics. Label which kind produced each number. In particular, a mention is not a citation, a citation is not a click, and an impression is not proof that a person saw a particular citation.
#1 Best Overall
Google Search Console’s generative AI Search report covers impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with page, country, date, device and search-type dimensions. These are Google Search signals, not cross-platform citation totals. Its separate Discover report concerns generative AI features in Discover. Google’s Search report guidance and Discover report guidance describe their respective scopes.
Microsoft’s Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report covers content shown across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated Bing summaries and select partner integrations. It reports citation activity and grounding-query phrases, but a total citation count does not show where a citation appeared in an answer. That scope is not a report for ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity. See Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance.
10 KPIs for an AI visibility dashboard
For sampled metrics, define the prompt set and valid-answer denominator before calculating rates. Store raw observations as well as percentages: a rate without its sample size and collection method is difficult to interpret or reproduce.

1. Brand mention rate
Calculation: sampled valid answers that name the brand ÷ all sampled valid answers × 100. Count an unlinked brand mention here even if the answer does not cite the website. Record the number of prompts and runs; hand-picked examples are useful for diagnosis but do not form a stable benchmark.
2. Citation rate
Calculation: sampled answers that cite or link to the website ÷ all sampled valid answers × 100. Decide in advance whether a citation must link to the exact domain or whether a specified set of owned domains counts. Keep this separate from mentions: an answer can name a company without linking to it, or cite a page without prominently naming the company.
3. Citation share
Calculation: citations to your site ÷ citations to all sites in a defined competitive set, for the same prompt sample or reporting scope. State the competitors and whether you count citations or answers containing citations. Microsoft announced Citation Share as a preview capability in Bing Webmaster Tools; it is not a standardized score that can be compared across every platform. The feature and its early-stage caveat are described in Microsoft’s June 16, 2026 announcement.
4. Cited-page breadth and concentration
Count distinct URLs cited in the observation window, then examine how citations are distributed across them. Breadth tells you whether citations reach the content set you intended to surface; concentration shows whether a small number of pages account for most observed citations. Bing provides URL-level citation counts for supported experiences. Those counts measure citation frequency, not page importance or rank.

Code where a mention or citation appears: near the beginning, as part of a recommendation, later as supporting material, or not at all. Preserve the answer text and use a written coding rule so different reviewers classify placements consistently. This is a sampled, manually assessed metric; Bing’s total citation count does not indicate placement.
6. Answer accuracy and sentiment
Review whether statements about the brand, products and claims are accurate, current, and neutral, positive or negative. Define what counts as an error and how sentiment is assigned; keep examples with the coded result so a change can be audited. Treat this as your own review rubric, not as a universal sentiment measure supplied by a platform dashboard.
Rank #4
7. Prompt and grounding-query coverage
Group questions by intent and topic—such as comparisons, troubleshooting or purchase research—and record which groups produce mentions or citations. For a prompt sample, report coverage by the prompts you tested, not by an assumed total universe of questions. Bing’s report surfaces grounding-query phrases, and its preview capabilities include Intents and Topics views for supported experiences.
8. First-party AI impressions
Use Google Search Console’s generative AI Search report for impressions reported in AI Overviews and AI Mode; inspect page, country, date, device and search-type dimensions where available. Use the separate generative AI Discover report for Discover features rather than combining it into Search totals. These are platform-specific impression signals, not evidence of citations or visibility across all conversational assistants. Google’s help pages note typical Search performance reporting limitations, including possible preliminary data and aggregation differences between chart and table totals; dates use Pacific Time. Discover dates also use Pacific Time, and report availability can depend on rollout status and a property’s impression volume.
9. AI referral sessions and engagement
In web analytics, identify sessions arriving from AI services when referrer information is available. Track engaged sessions and time spent alongside session counts, and document how your analytics setup classifies referrers. This metric captures visits that reached your site, not answers where the brand appeared: users can see a mention or citation without clicking through. Google’s guidance recommends analytics tools for measures such as conversions and time spent in addition to Search Console; see AI Features and Your Website.

10. Conversions and assisted outcomes
Count defined outcomes—such as leads, purchases or subscriptions—from attributable AI referral sessions. If you assess assisted outcomes, state the attribution model and window, and keep direct conversions distinct from assisted ones. A citation or impression alone does not demonstrate commercial impact; connect outcomes to analytics evidence rather than inferring them from visibility counts.

- Set the scope. Fix the platform or experience, locale, language, prompt set, cadence and collection method. Keep separate prompt sets for materially different audiences or geographies.
- Capture the observation. Save the exact question, date, answer text, cited URLs, and observed brand and competitor presence. Record no-answer or unavailable cases rather than silently dropping them.
- Repeat the checks. Answers can vary between runs. Use repeat observations to understand that variation and label results as a sample, never a complete census of platform answers.
- Compare like with like. Compare the same platform, prompt set, geography and reporting window. If one changes, mark the break in the series instead of presenting the figures as directly comparable.
- Keep evidence types separate. Do not merge native impression counts, citation counts, sampled mention rates and third-party estimates into a single “visibility” number. Preserve each measure’s source, definition and denominator.
What first-party reporting covers
| Reporting source | What it reports | Scope and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance | Total citations, average cited pages, URL-level citations, trends and grounding-query phrases. | Public preview introduced February 10, 2026; covers Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated Bing summaries and select partner integrations. Citation totals do not convey placement in an answer. |
| Bing preview expansion | Intents, Topics, Citation Share and Compare capabilities. | Microsoft announced a global rollout of these preview capabilities on June 16, 2026, and described coverage and precision as areas that may improve. Do not treat preview outputs as universal standardized measures. |
| Google Search Console generative AI Search report | Impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with page, country, date, device and search-type dimensions. | Google Search-specific impression reporting, not citations across conversational AI platforms. Dates use Pacific Time; usual Search performance reporting limitations apply. |
| Google Search Console generative AI Discover report | Performance insights for generative AI features in Discover. | Separate from the Search report. Google said insights had rolled out worldwide by August 31, 2026, while noting rollout may continue for some properties and a site may not have enough impressions. Dates use Pacific Time. |
These reports answer different questions and do not jointly provide a verified first-party publisher citation dashboard for ChatGPT or Perplexity. Google’s Search report concerns AI Overviews and AI Mode; it should not be relabeled as a report for the Gemini chatbot. The Bing report concerns the Microsoft-supported experiences it specifies, not ChatGPT. Check the relevant product’s current reporting and scope before making platform-wide claims.
Use technical eligibility as a diagnostic, not a visibility KPI
For Google’s AI features, pages must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to be eligible as supporting links in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Eligibility does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving. Google’s guidance on AI features and websites says foundational Search practices remain relevant and cautions against treating speculative optimization tactics as required. Check crawlability and index eligibility when investigating missing appearances, but do not count either as evidence that an AI answer actually showed the page.
