Build the project in a dedicated conda environment, then install and use an agent framework inside it. Anaconda manages Python and package dependencies; it does not supply the agent runtime by itself. This guide uses the OpenAI Agents SDK as one concrete Python example, but the same environment workflow can support other frameworks.
1. Create a project and a conda environment
Keep the agent project and its dependencies separate from other Python work. Conda supports named or path-based environments, activation, and sharing. Start with a project directory and a named environment:

mkdir my-agent
cd my-agent
conda create --name my-agent python
conda activate my-agent
The command asks conda to choose a Python version. Before pinning a specific version, check the current installation requirements for the framework you intend to use; Python compatibility can vary between frameworks and releases.

Conda’s environment documentation covers creating, activating, exporting, and sharing environments. Its project tutorial demonstrates using an environment.yml file and running a project script. Create from a definition file with:
conda env create --file environment.yml
conda activate my-agent
Use the environment name declared in the YAML file when activating it.
2. Choose an agent runtime
An agent framework provides the runtime that interprets instructions, calls models, and may manage tools or multi-step workflows. Conda only manages the Python environment and dependencies. Choose the framework according to your provider, control-flow, and deployment needs.
OpenAI Agents SDK: a focused hosted-provider example
The OpenAI Agents SDK documents a Python route using an Agent and Runner. With the conda environment active, install the SDK:
Rank #2
pip install openai-agents
This is an SDK installation example, not a reason to skip conda. The SDK quickstart also shows a Python virtual environment, but the package can be installed in the active conda environment.
Anaconda AI: optional integrations
If you specifically want Anaconda-curated models or its integrations, Anaconda AI is another option. Its documentation describes installing it with conda install anaconda-ai and integrating with frameworks including LangChain, LlamaIndex, and Pydantic AI. It is an optional path, not a general requirement for building an agent.
3. Configure credentials and make a minimal agent
For the OpenAI SDK example, set OPENAI_API_KEY in the runtime environment rather than placing a real secret in a checked-in source file or environment definition. In a shell, the quickstart’s pattern is:
export OPENAI_API_KEY="your-api-key"
The SDK resolves this key when it first creates its OpenAI client, as described in its configuration guide. Adapt the shell syntax if you use a different terminal or operating system.
Then create agent.py with one narrow task and run it:
import asyncio
from agents import Agent, Runner
async def main():
agent = Agent(
name="Python helper",
instructions="Explain Python errors in plain language. Ask for the traceback if it is missing.",
)
result = await Runner.run(agent, "What does a NameError usually mean?")
print(result.final_output)
if __name__ == "__main__":
asyncio.run(main())
Run the script from the activated environment:
python agent.py
Inspect the returned output and confirm the environment can reach the configured model service. This minimal example has no tools or persistent conversation state; add those only when the task requires them.

4. Extend the agent only when the workflow needs it
The SDK documents several features that address different needs. They are not all necessary for a first agent:
- Function tools: Add a tool when the agent needs to perform a defined action through your code or a service. Keep the operation and its inputs narrowly scoped.
- Sessions or explicit conversation state: Use these when later turns need context from earlier turns. A single run does not by itself establish a continuing conversation.
- Handoffs: Use these when one agent should delegate to a specialist agent rather than handle every task itself.
- Guardrails: Apply these to validate inputs or outputs against requirements that matter to your application.
- Tracing: Use traces to understand the steps taken during a run and diagnose unexpected behavior.
These capabilities and their usage are covered in the SDK documentation. Add complexity incrementally so you can identify whether a problem comes from the model interaction, a tool, state handling, or delegation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Save and share the environment deliberately
Keep the project’s dependency specification alongside its code, then choose an export format based on what collaborators need. Conda supports YAML exports as well as explicit specifications tied to a platform. A YAML specification is suited to sharing an environment definition across setups; an explicit export is platform-specific and is useful when reproducing the package set on that platform.
conda export --format yaml --file environment.yml
conda export --format explicit --file explicit.txt
Use the YAML file to create an environment on another machine with conda env create --file environment.yml. Do not treat a platform-specific explicit export as a universal cross-platform lockfile. See the conda environment documentation for supported export and recreation workflows.
6. Match the framework to the project
There is no universal framework winner established by these setup options. Compare the actual project requirements before committing to a runtime:
| Decision | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Environment management | Whether a conda environment file and export workflow fit the project, or whether the framework’s recommended setup better meets its needs. |
| Provider and model access | Whether the agent will use a hosted API and its credentials, or Anaconda AI’s curated model and backend approach. |
| Control and workflow | Whether a simple agent and tool loop is enough, or the application needs managed sessions, specialist handoffs, or explicit graph/state orchestration. |
| Reproducibility and operations | Which environment specification fits collaborators’ platforms, and whether tracing or deployment constraints affect the choice. |
The cited documentation describes these options but does not provide a head-to-head benchmark. Decide based on provider support, workflow features, and deployment requirements rather than assuming that Anaconda itself determines the agent framework.
