Android phone integration on a Chromebook is a collection of connected-device features, not one all-purpose link. After you connect the phone in Chromebook settings, Phone Hub gives you a place to check selected phone information and use certain actions. Messaging, app streaming, unlocking and mobile-data sharing have their own controls and eligibility requirements.
What Phone Hub does
Phone Hub is the Chromebook-side panel for selected phone information and actions. Depending on your devices and settings, it can show the phone’s cellular signal and battery, let you silence or locate the phone, and provide a shortcut to enable its hotspot. You can also browse Chrome tabs open on the phone, sync notifications, and access or download recent photos and screenshots from the phone’s Gallery. Google describes these options in its Phone Hub guide.

Other connected-phone functions sit alongside Phone Hub rather than being interchangeable with it. Google’s connection guide covers sending and receiving text messages on the Chromebook, syncing chat notifications and photos, connecting to the phone’s network, and unlocking the Chromebook with the phone. Availability and settings differ by function.
Connect an Android phone to a Chromebook
Google’s guides describe two setup routes. For the Phone Hub flow, the dedicated guide specifies ChromeOS M89 or later and Android 5.1 or later. Its steps begin from the Chromebook shelf or status area. The broader phone-connection guide lists ChromeOS 71 or later and Android 6 or later for connecting a phone and using its documented feature set. These are requirements from different Google help pages, not one universal minimum for every feature.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
- Turn on Bluetooth on both devices and keep them nearby during setup.
- Start setup. On the Chromebook, open Phone Hub from the shelf or status area and choose Get started, or open Settings → Connected devices → Android phone. Google also offers QR-code setup during initial Chromebook setup.
- Verify and confirm. Follow the on-screen prompts, verify your identity when asked, and accept the connection on both devices.
- Choose features. Select which connected-phone functions to enable. You can later change Phone Hub or individual feature settings under Settings → Connected devices.
For the Phone Hub-specific steps and supported functions, see Google’s Phone Hub instructions; for QR setup and the broader connection flow, see its Android phone connection guide.
How the main connected-phone features differ
| Function | What it does | Key requirements or limits |
|---|---|---|
| Phone Hub | Shows selected phone information and shortcuts, recent phone media, Chrome tabs, and synced notifications. | Phone Hub’s dedicated guide lists ChromeOS M89 or later and Android 5.1 or later. Individual options may have additional conditions. |
| Text messaging | Lets you send and receive text messages on the Chromebook through the connected phone. | Covered by Google’s connection guide; the exact feature availability depends on the connected setup. |
| Phone app streaming | Streams selected apps from the phone to the Chromebook. | Requires a supported phone, proximity, a compatible shared network, and additional permissions; some apps may behave unexpectedly because of DRM policies. |
| Smart Lock | Uses the connected phone to help unlock the Chromebook. | Requires an internet connection on the Chromebook, the same Google Account, and an unlocked phone with Bluetooth and a screen lock enabled. |
| Instant Tethering | Connects the Chromebook to the phone’s mobile-data network. | Requires supported devices and software, the same signed-in Google Account, and carrier support for hotspot use; charges or limits may apply. |
App streaming has the narrowest compatibility
Phone Hub app streaming is not available on every Android phone. Google lists these compatible categories in its Phone Hub guide:
Rank #2
- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
- Pixel 4A or later running Android 13 or later.
- Nothing Phone (1) and Nothing Phone (2).
- Selected Xiaomi models running Android 13 or later: 12T, 12T Pro, 13 and 13 Pro.
The phone and Chromebook need to be close together and on the same Wi-Fi network. Some public or private Wi-Fi networks may not support app streaming. Google says Instant Tethering can put the devices on the same local network when the existing network is incompatible.

Streaming also depends on permissions and app behavior. The phone must grant the relevant Notifications, Photos and Media, and Apps permissions, and the Chromebook’s Notifications and Apps toggles must be enabled. Google warns that DRM policies in some entertainment apps can make streaming behave unexpectedly. The compatibility list can change, so check Google’s live Phone Hub requirements before relying on a particular model.
Rank #3
- Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage
- 15" FHD IPS Display, Intel UHD Graphics
- 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
- Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
- Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver
Unlocking and mobile-data sharing have separate requirements
Unlock with Smart Lock
Google’s Smart Lock guide requires the Chromebook to have an internet connection and use the same Google Account as the phone. The phone must run Android L-MR1 or later, be unlocked, have Bluetooth turned on and have a screen lock configured. Google says Smart Lock is on by default after connection; you can switch it off in Settings → Connected devices → Android phone.
Connect through the phone’s mobile data
Instant Tethering has its own software and device conditions. Google’s phone network instructions list ChromeOS 71 or later, Android 8.1 or later, the same signed-in Google Account on both devices, and a Chromebook that supports Instant Hotspot. A carrier may restrict hotspot use or charge extra, and sharing mobile data may use more of the phone’s battery.

What works offline—and what still needs a network
Google’s Chromebook Help page, “Set up and use Phone Hub on your Chromebook,” says: “You can still use these features when your Chromebook is offline.” That statement should not be read as a promise that every connected-phone feature works without a network. App streaming requires the phone and Chromebook to share a supported Wi-Fi network, Smart Lock’s guide requires Chromebook internet access, and Instant Tethering uses the phone’s mobile data.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

You choose which connected features to enable and can manage Phone Hub or individual options from Settings → Connected devices. App streaming asks for phone permissions covering notifications, photos and media, and apps; those permissions and the Chromebook’s corresponding Notifications and Apps controls determine whether streaming can work.

Work or school policies may block phone connection or particular functions. If the Chromebook is managed by an organization and a setting is unavailable, its administrator may need to allow the feature. Google notes this possibility in its Phone Hub guide and connection guide.
If the phone will not connect
Google recommends checking Bluetooth, account, and software conditions before retrying setup. Try these steps:
- Remove any previous Bluetooth pairing between the phone and Chromebook on both devices.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on both devices, then toggle Bluetooth off and on again on the phone.
- Check that both devices use the same Google Account and that the phone and Google Play services are updated.
- Restart the Chromebook and repeat setup from Settings → Connected devices → Android phone.
- If a work or school policy manages the Chromebook, ask the administrator whether connected-phone features are restricted.
These troubleshooting steps come from Google’s Phone Hub troubleshooting guidance and phone connection guide.
