How to Build a Zero-Upload PDF Suite in the Browser with WebAssembly and Web Workers

A PDF suite can keep document bytes in the browser: JavaScript coordinates the interface, PDF.js parses and renders documents, a Web Worker moves expensive work off the main thread, and WebAssembly accelerates selected hot paths such as image decoding. The design removes the upload step, but “100% client-side” is a property you must verify by auditing network requests, analytics, error reporting, service-worker caches and persistence—not a claim you can infer from using PDF.js alone.

What a zero-upload PDF suite actually means

In a zero-upload workflow, a user chooses a local file, the browser reads it with the File API, and parsing, rendering and any transformations happen inside that browser session. The original bytes are not sent to a PDF-processing server merely to display or manipulate the document. The browser can then offer a download of the result.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That definition is narrower than “the application makes no network requests.” A page still has to load its HTML, JavaScript, PDF.js distribution and WebAssembly assets. Analytics, crash reporting, third-party fonts, service-worker caches or diagnostic uploads could also transmit data unless they are deliberately disabled or designed to exclude document content. A defensible privacy statement should therefore describe exactly what is and is not sent, and should be backed by an inspection of the browser’s Network panel and storage APIs.

The exact implementation of the project named in the headline is not publicly documented. The architecture below is a practical, standards-based way to build the same kind of application, using the capabilities Mozilla documents for PDF.js, WebAssembly and Web Workers.

The architecture: four responsibilities, one local data path

PDF.js core parses the file

Mozilla describes PDF.js as “a general-purpose, web standards-based platform for parsing and rendering PDFs.” Its core layer parses and interprets PDF files. The display layer exposes rendering and document-information APIs, while the viewer layer supplies a user interface. Keeping those layers conceptually separate lets a suite replace the stock viewer without rewriting the parser.

Your application can use the display APIs for page counts, metadata and page rendering, then build its own panels for operations such as selecting pages or exporting a modified document. The parser does not need a server connection to understand a local Uint8Array or object URL.

A Web Worker keeps the interface responsive

PDF parsing, font handling, image decoding and page rendering can compete with pointer events and layout on the main thread. PDF.js ships a pdf.worker.mjs module for worker-side processing. The main thread should handle file selection, controls and painting to a canvas; the worker should handle document work and return structured results or rendered data.

This separation does not make processing free. The worker has its own memory budget, and transferring or copying large buffers can be expensive. Prefer transferable ArrayBuffer objects where the API permits them, and release references when a document is closed.

WebAssembly accelerates selected hot paths

PDF.js exposes useWasm, wasmUrl and useWorkerFetch options. Its API reference says useWasm defaults to true in web environments and attempts WebAssembly to improve image-decoding performance. That supports a hybrid design: JavaScript remains the coordinator while WebAssembly accelerates particular computational paths.

It does not establish that every suite feature is implemented in WebAssembly. Text extraction, UI state, file selection and export orchestration can still be JavaScript. Treat WASM as an accelerator, not as a replacement for the entire application.

The browser is the storage boundary

A local-only suite can keep the selected bytes in memory and create a download when the user is finished. Avoid writing document data to IndexedDB, localStorage or Cache Storage unless the product explicitly needs persistence and clearly explains it. Revoke object URLs after use, clear references to closed documents and provide a visible “discard” action so users can remove data before closing the tab.

Build the processing pipeline step by step

  1. Serve the application over HTTP. Mozilla notes that the PDF.js worker is not enabled for file:// URLs. Use a local development server or a hosted HTTP(S) origin; opening the HTML file directly is not a valid test of the worker configuration.
  2. Pin a known PDF.js release. Mozilla’s official getting-started page lists stable release v6.3.289 in 2026. Pin the version in your build rather than silently accepting a changing asset, and test upgrades because browser defects and missing features can vary by release.
  3. Configure the worker asset. Make pdf.worker.mjs available from the origin that serves the application, or configure the bundler to emit it as a separate asset. Set PDF.js’s worker source before loading a document. A worker URL that fails to load usually results in a fallback, an exception or work returning to the main thread, depending on the integration.
  4. Read a local file. On the change event from an <input type="file">, obtain the first File. Use arrayBuffer() when you need an in-memory byte sequence, or create an object URL when the viewer can consume a URL. Do not send the file to an upload endpoint.
  5. Open the document through PDF.js. Pass the bytes or object URL to getDocument. Keep the returned loading task so cancellation is possible when the user selects another file. Display progress and errors rather than leaving the interface apparently frozen.
  6. Render only what the user needs. Request a page, calculate its viewport at the chosen scale and render to a canvas. For a multipage document, render the visible page first and schedule thumbnails or distant pages later. This limits simultaneous canvas memory.
  7. Perform suite operations on explicit selections. Keep page selections and options in application state, not in hidden server sessions. Before an expensive operation, show the estimated scope—such as selected pages—and provide cancel and reset controls.
  8. Export locally. Produce a Blob, create a temporary object URL and trigger a download. Revoke the URL after the download is initiated. A download is a user action; it is not an upload to your service.
  9. Close and clean up. Destroy the loading task or document when the user opens another file, remove canvases that are no longer visible and clear byte buffers. Cleanup is essential on long sessions with several large PDFs.

A minimal orchestration shape

const task = pdfjsLib.getDocument({
  data: bytes,
  useWasm: true,
  wasmUrl: configuredWasmUrl,
  useWorkerFetch: true
});
const pdf = await task.promise;
const page = await pdf.getPage(pageNumber);
const viewport = page.getViewport({ scale });
canvas.width = viewport.width;
canvas.height = viewport.height;
await page.render({ canvasContext, viewport }).promise;

This is an integration outline rather than a drop-in build: asset paths, bundler syntax and export libraries differ. The important boundary is that the document bytes enter getDocument locally and the worker module is served from an HTTP(S) origin. Confirm the option names against the PDF.js API reference for the version you pin.

Privacy: how to substantiate “zero cloud storage”

Audit every outbound path

  • Inspect document-load, render and export actions in the browser Network panel. No request should contain the selected PDF bytes.
  • Review analytics events. Send event names and timings only if they cannot include filenames, extracted text, page images or byte payloads.
  • Check error reporting configuration. Stack traces are useful, but captured request bodies, DOM snapshots or canvas contents can disclose document data.
  • Inspect service-worker registration and Cache Storage. A cache can persist responses even when no application server stores the original file.
  • Inspect IndexedDB, localStorage and sessionStorage after processing. Keep document data out of these stores unless persistence is an explicit feature.
  • Document third-party resources and content-security policy. A privacy promise is harder to defend when scripts or telemetry come from uncontrolled origins.

A separate IXPDF vendor page claims local file-byte handling in a Web Worker and no server-side storage, but that is a product claim, not an audit of this project. Do not present it as independent verification.

Local files and remote PDFs are different products

Local files avoid the cross-origin problem because the bytes are already in the user’s browser. Remote documents introduce network policy and server behavior.

Same-origin policy and CORS

PDF.js documents that the browser’s same-origin policy blocks cross-origin requests by default. A remote PDF therefore needs the correct CORS response headers, or your application needs a server-side proxy that fetches it. A client-side suite can remain zero-upload for local files while still making network requests for a URL the user explicitly entered; describe those modes separately in the interface and privacy policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Range requests for large remote files

The PDF.js FAQ explains that HTTP Range Requests can let a viewer fetch and render needed portions without fully loading a large file when the server supplies the required headers. This reduces initial transfer, but it is not applicable to every host and does not make a remote document local-only. Show a clear loading state and fall back gracefully when range requests are unavailable.

Browser support, memory and startup trade-offs

Design choice Benefit Cost or limitation
Local-only processing Document bytes can stay on the device, eliminating upload latency and server-side PDF storage. Privacy depends on auditing telemetry, caches, persistence and error reporting; heavy documents still consume local memory.
JavaScript with WASM-assisted paths WebAssembly can improve selected image-decoding paths while JavaScript keeps UI and file handling flexible. A WASM module adds download and startup work, and not every feature runs in WASM.
Web Worker processing Parsing and rendering work is separated from input, scrolling and controls. Worker startup, message transfer and a second memory context add overhead; incorrect worker setup can fail under file://.
Remote-document support Users can open URLs and, with server support, fetch only needed ranges. Same-origin policy, CORS headers and Range support are controlled partly by the remote server.
Modern browser target Lets the application use current PDF.js and WebAssembly capabilities. Older browsers may be excluded, and Safari can have defects or missing features.

PDF.js’s FAQ lists modern builds targeting current browsers, with legacy support including Chrome 125+ and Safari 18+, while noting Safari defects or missing features. Treat those versions as the documented compatibility baseline for the cited build, not a guarantee that every suite operation behaves identically on every device.

There is no independently published benchmark for this titled project. Do not promise a particular speedup, maximum page count or file-size limit. Performance depends on page complexity, embedded images and fonts, device memory, browser implementation and how many canvases your UI keeps alive.

Design for failure instead of hiding it

The worker does not load

Check that the application is served over HTTP(S), that the worker URL is reachable, and that the server returns JavaScript with a usable MIME type. Verify the final emitted filename after bundling; a source path that works in development can be wrong in production.

A document appears blank or fails to parse

Show the PDF.js error to the user in plain language and retain a retry action. Confirm that the selected input is actually a PDF, that the byte buffer was not detached by an earlier transfer, and that the file is not truncated. Do not silently upload it as a fallback if the product promises local processing.

The tab becomes slow or crashes

Reduce concurrent rendering, lower preview scale, virtualize long page lists and dispose of canvases that leave the viewport. Release the previous document before opening another. A worker prevents main-thread blockage, but it cannot remove the device’s memory limit.

A remote URL works on one site but not another

Inspect CORS and Range response headers. If the owner does not permit browser access, explain that limitation instead of attempting a hidden cross-origin request. A proxy changes the privacy model because the proxy receives the document.

Testing checklist for a trustworthy release

  • Open, render and close small and image-heavy PDFs on each supported browser.
  • Select a second file while the first is loading and verify cancellation and cleanup.
  • Run with the browser offline after the application assets are installed; local processing should not require a processing API.
  • Use DevTools to confirm that file selection, rendering and export do not transmit document bytes.
  • Check memory over a session that opens and closes several large documents.
  • Test worker startup from a local HTTP server and from the production origin, not from file://.
  • Test remote PDFs separately, including a server with CORS and Range support and one without each.
  • Record the pinned PDF.js version and the browser versions used for acceptance testing.

When this architecture is the right choice

Choose a client-side suite when data locality, offline-capable local files and removal of upload latency matter more than centralized processing. It is especially suitable when users work with sensitive documents and the product can keep its feature set within browser memory and compatibility limits.

Choose a remote service when you need predictable processing of very large files, centralized queues, server-side archival or capabilities unavailable in the target browsers. If you offer both modes, label them explicitly: “local file” and “remote URL” have different network and privacy behavior.

The durable pattern is not “put everything in WebAssembly.” It is a clear pipeline: PDF.js parses and renders, a worker isolates expensive work, WebAssembly accelerates measured hot paths, and the application proves its privacy claims by observing every place bytes could leave or persist.
