How to Build a Text Adventure with an ESP32-C3, an E-Ink Display, and the Gemini API

Connect an ESP32-C3, compatible e-paper display, and Gemini API in a staged text-adventure build, starting with a local display test and checking panel compatibility.

You can build this as three connected parts: an ESP32-C3 runs the client firmware and connects over Wi-Fi, an e-paper display shows each passage, and a remote Gemini API request generates the next turn. The simplest documented hardware starting point is Seeed’s integrated 7.5-inch monochrome XIAO ESP32-C3 ePaper Panel. The sources document the component capabilities and setup paths, but not a tested, turnkey project joining them.

How the three parts work together

The ESP32-C3 is the networked controller, not the place where Gemini generates the story. Espressif documents 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi on the chip; the firmware uses that connection to send a request to Google’s remote Gemini API. The device then parses the returned text and draws it on the display. This is an application architecture assembled from the documented capabilities, not a vendor-verified end-to-end build.

An e-paper screen suits a text adventure because the image remains visible without power after a refresh, according to Seeed’s panel documentation. The controller still needs power to connect, request new text, and refresh the screen.

Choose the hardware route

Route What it combines What you need to verify
Integrated panel Seeed’s 7.5-inch monochrome ePaper Panel combines a XIAO ESP32-C3 and display; Seeed lists 800 × 480 resolution and Arduino support. Follow the exact panel guide and matching example/library for its display. This is the least complicated documented starting point.
Separate board and breakout A XIAO ESP32-C3 pairs with Seeed’s ePaper breakout and a separately selected display. Confirm the exact panel is supported, then use its corresponding SPI pin mapping and driver configuration. E-paper screens are not interchangeable just because they use the same display technology.

Seeed lists a built-in 2000 mAh battery for the integrated panel. Its product page advertises up to three months of battery life in deep sleep; that is a vendor claim under its stated conditions, not an expected runtime for an adventure device that regularly wakes, uses Wi-Fi, calls an API, and refreshes the display.

  • Entering download mode: Press and hold the BOOT button of ESP32C3, then press the RESET button, release the RESET button, and then release the BOOT button, at this time, ESP32C3 will enter the download mode. (You need to re-enter the download mode every time you connect, sometimes you press it once, the port is unstable and will disconnect, you can judge it by the port recognition sound)

Set up the firmware in stages

Seeed provides an Arduino route for its integrated panel. Espressif’s official ESP-IDF getting-started workflow covers setting up the environment, creating and configuring a project, building, flashing, and monitoring ESP32-C3 firmware. These are documented framework options; neither is established as mandatory for this project.

  1. Start with the display guide. Use the vendor’s instructions and panel-matched example or library for the hardware you selected. For separate components, check the supported display model, SPI pins, and driver settings in the breakout guide.
  2. Render a local test page. Draw a short passage before adding Wi-Fi or API calls. This separates display wiring and rendering problems from network and application problems.
  3. Connect to Wi-Fi. The ESP32-C3’s 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi provides the network path to Google’s API. Add connection-failure handling before making the story request.
  4. Call Gemini and display the result. Send the player’s action and relevant story context, parse the response, lay it out for the selected screen resolution, and refresh the display.

Keep API/network errors separate from display-refresh errors. For example, preserve the last accepted story state if a request fails, and show an error or offer a retry without treating an incomplete response as the next passage. These are implementation recommendations, not a tested procedure.

Use the current Gemini API guidance

Google’s API documentation describes text generation and conversational agents and shows REST authentication using an x-goog-api-key header. As of the documentation’s September 23, 2026 update, the Interactions API is the default interface; Google describes generateContent as legacy while continuing to support it. For a new build, start with the current Interactions API documentation and confirm the request format, available model names, and account requirements when implementing, because these can change.

An API key is a credential sent as part of the request. Do not commit it to a public firmware repository. The cited documentation establishes the key-based authentication flow, but does not establish a hardware-specific secure provisioning method for this project.

Design each story turn for a small screen

A practical request can include a short premise, only the recent context needed to continue, and the player’s latest action. Ask for a compact passage and a small set of choices so the returned text can fit the display. This is a design approach based on the API’s text-generation capabilities and the screen’s finite area; Google does not prescribe a prompt, story-state format, response length, or guarantee that a continuation will follow a particular structure.

On the device, treat the response as content to lay out rather than a screen-ready page. Wrap lines for the chosen resolution, make choices distinguishable from narrative text, and decide how the player selects an option using the controls available in the build. The cited sources do not specify a control scheme or a tested rendering implementation.

Plan for compatibility and changing APIs

  • Match the exact display. Before wiring or buying a separate panel, verify its controller and driver configuration against the breakout’s supported models and pin mappings.
  • Keep display and network faults distinct. Test local rendering first, then Wi-Fi and the API, so a failure in one layer does not obscure another.
  • Recheck Google’s API documentation. The documented default interface and model identifiers can change; the cited page was updated September 23, 2026.
  • Do not treat the battery-life claim as a project measurement. The three-month deep-sleep figure is Seeed’s product claim, not a runtime test of frequent network and display activity.
