Sometimes—but there is no universal serial-number lookup, QR code, hologram, or visual test that proves every product is genuine. Start by checking the seller and purchase channel, then use the manufacturer’s official verification method if one is available. Treat visible marks and codes as evidence to assess, not guarantees.
How can I tell if a product is genuine?
Authentication depends on the product and the system behind its identifying marks. A serial number or label matters most when the brand can validate it against an authoritative record and confirm that the result matches the exact product. A code that merely scans, or packaging that looks convincing, does not establish that on its own.

Begin with the seller: check whether the brand identifies it as an official retailer or distribution channel, and look at the seller’s details, return terms, and explanation for any unusually low price. A credible route to market is useful evidence, but it is not an item-level authentication check.

Serial numbers and unique identifiers
A unique identifier may connect an item to a manufacturer’s record or verification service. Use the brand’s official lookup or customer-service channel, if offered, and check that the result corresponds to the exact model and product details. A printed number can be copied; its value depends on how the brand manages and verifies it. ISO 22378:2022 describes a framework for identifier management and verification, including participant due diligence and related authentication elements.

QR codes and other encoded marks
A QR code may open a brand verification service or carry an identifier used by one. Check the destination domain before proceeding, and confirm that the page and result belong to the brand. Scanning a code is not itself verification. The FTC warns that QR codes in unexpected packages can lead to phishing pages; do not enter login or payment details on a suspicious page. If a code arrives in an unexpected message or package, find the company’s contact details independently instead of relying on the link.
Holograms and other visible security features
Holograms and similar features can help distinguish products when they are part of a well-managed authentication system. They can also be imitated, copied, or detached and reused. Follow the brand’s product-specific instructions and combine a feature check with seller and brand verification. ISO 22383:2020 provides guidance for organizations evaluating authentication solutions; it does not prescribe one technology for every product.

Packaging, labels, origin, and product details
Look for spelling errors, poor finishing, inconsistent labels or origin information, and product details that do not match the brand’s official information. USPTO’s “four Ps” offer a screening aid: Price, Package, Product, and Place. These are reasons to investigate, not a forensic test. Packaging can be copied, and legitimate products may vary between markets or production runs.

How do I check a product serial number or code safely?
- Find the brand’s instructions. Go to the manufacturer’s official site by typing its address or finding it independently; do not assume that a third-party lookup page is authorized.
- Check the identifier in the specified way. Enter the serial number or scan the mark only through the official channel the brand identifies.
- Compare the result with the item. Confirm that returned information matches the precise product and its details. A number that is readable, or a code that opens a page, is not enough if the result cannot be tied to the item.
- Stop if the destination looks wrong. Do not enter credentials or payment information on a suspicious page. Contact the brand using independently located contact details.
- Keep evidence if the check is inconclusive. Save the listing, photographs, receipt, and order confirmation so you can discuss the exact item with the brand, seller, or marketplace.

- Who controls it? A brand or authorized verifier is more relevant than an unrecognized third-party page or seller-provided claim.
- What is checked? An item identifier, a packaging mark, seller identity, and visual resemblance answer different questions.
- Is it checked against an authoritative record? Reading or scanning a number is not the same as having the brand validate it.
- Can the mark be copied or moved? Consider whether the system is designed to detect reuse, rather than relying on a feature that can be transferred.
- Is the method specific to this product and market? Brand instructions for the exact model are more useful than generic code-checking advice.
- What recourse is available? Check for a brand contact route, marketplace reporting options, return terms, and a documented purchase.
There are no comparative accuracy scores established here for serial checks, QR codes, holograms, or visual inspection. Do not treat one method as universally more reliable based on a claimed success rate.
What to do if the product still seems suspicious
- Pause use or further payment if appropriate. Do not follow suspicious links or provide sensitive information to an unverified contact.
- Contact the brand independently. Use contact details from its official site and ask about the precise identifier, product, and purchase channel.
- Contact the seller and marketplace. Provide the saved listing, photographs, and purchase records; use the marketplace’s reporting process if available.
- Use the relevant consumer authority. Reporting routes and consumer remedies differ by country. In the United States, FTC consumer guidance and OCC fraud guidance describe options for reporting suspected scams.
For purchases through covered U.S. online marketplaces, the INFORM Consumers Act requires collection, verification, and disclosure of information about certain high-volume third-party sellers and a way to report suspicious activity. Those measures improve seller transparency; they do not authenticate an individual product.

Why authentication methods differ
ISO 22383:2020 addresses performance criteria and evaluation methods for authentication solutions intended to establish material-goods authenticity and integrity through the product life cycle. It is guidance for organizations selecting solutions after assessing counterfeiting risks, not a consumer test or a prescribed technology. ISO 22378:2022 addresses identification and authentication systems, including identifier management and verification. ISO 22381:2018 concerns interoperability between independently functioning identification and related authentication systems; ISO reports it was reviewed and confirmed in 2024.
