Choose a pool supply retailer by checking authorization for the exact brand and product, confirming that parts or equipment fit your pool, and comparing the full delivered cost and item-specific return terms. For major equipment that needs sizing or installation, ask what professional help the seller can provide before you buy.
Start with the product you need
The right checks depend on whether you are buying a chemical, a replacement part, or major equipment. A retailer may be suitable for one purchase without being the best choice for another. Before comparing sellers, identify the product, brand, equipment model and part number where relevant, and any installation or support you will need.

Chemicals and testing supplies
Check that the product is appropriate for your pool and intended use. Read its label and follow the directions and local requirements. If certification matters to you, verify it for the specific product rather than assuming that a retailer or its entire catalog is certified.

Replacement parts
Match the part to the make and model of the equipment, and compare the part number where one is available. If a listing leaves compatibility unclear, ask the seller to confirm it in writing before ordering. A low price is little help if the part does not fit or the return terms make a mistaken order costly.
Major equipment
For a pump, filter, or other substantial equipment purchase, find out who can help with sizing, installation, and warranty questions. Pentair describes its TradeGrade policy as applying to covered equipment that is correctly sized, purchased from, and installed by a pool professional. That is a brand-specific policy, not a rule for every manufacturer or product; check the applicable manufacturer guidance for the item you are considering.

Check authorization and certification at the source
Do not treat a retailer’s general statement that it is an authorized dealer as proof that it is authorized for every brand, product, or channel. Use the manufacturer’s current information and check the exact seller and item. Maytronics’ authorized online reseller page, labeled last updated November 2025, illustrates why the check can be time-sensitive: its stated process for online Dolphin cleaner sellers includes annual application and renewal. Verify the current listing when you shop.
Certification is a separate question from authorization. NSF describes certification involving laboratory testing, production-facility audits, and retesting, and identifies categories such as filters, drain covers, pumps, disinfection equipment, water treatment chemicals, chemical equipment, and water-quality test devices. NSF’s overview of pool and hot tub products explains the scope of NSF/ANSI/CAN 50 for pool, spa, hot tub, and other recreational-water equipment. Check the status of the particular product; a retailer’s presence in the market does not certify the products it sells.

For treatment chemicals, NSF’s swimming pool and spa chemicals certification information describes NSF/ANSI/CAN 50 Annex R as addressing potential health effects and oral, inhalation, and dermal exposure routes. Certification is one product consideration, not a substitute for choosing a chemical suited to your water or following its label and local requirements.
Compare the whole order, not just the listed price
Work out what the order will cost delivered, including freight and any other disclosed charge. Then read the conditions attached to discounts or price matching: check eligibility for the exact item and whether exclusions or thresholds apply. Retailers publish their own policies, and terms can vary by product and order. For example, Doheny’s Pool Supply Superstore presents retailer-specific claims and policies; use the current terms on the retailer’s site rather than assuming they apply to another seller.

Before checkout, look up the return policy for the item itself. Pay particular attention to whether opening a chemical container changes eligibility, and whether special orders, electrical items, or oversized equipment have different rules or return-freight costs. If a policy is unclear, ask the retailer to clarify it before you place the order and retain the response with your order records.
Decide when to buy locally or online
A local pool professional or manufacturer-authorized dealer is worth considering when the purchase depends on correct sizing, installation, or help navigating manufacturer support. Pentair’s TradeGrade guidance recommends professional purchase and installation for equipment covered by that policy.

Dealer support is a possible benefit, not a guarantee. Federal Trade Commission case materials from November 2011 and January 2012 describe dealers’ retail role and assistance with manufacturer warranty programs and product questions; they provide industry context, not evidence that every current seller offers the same service or that every local dealer is authorized for every brand. Online purchasing can still be practical when the product is clearly identified, compatibility is confirmed, authorization is verifiable where relevant, and shipping and returns are acceptable. A seller’s location alone does not establish its expertise, authorization, or reliability.
