The available documentation explains those design choices; it does not establish what a particular developer built or found surprising.
What GoFr contributes to a booking API
GoFr describes itself as an opinionated Go framework for microservice development. Its official overview highlights REST-oriented defaults, configuration, middleware, observability through metrics, traces, and logs, and integrations with databases and messaging systems. The project lists support for systems including MySQL, Postgres, Kafka, Google Pub/Sub, and NATS JetStream. These are documented capabilities, not performance guarantees or proof that a specific booking service is easy to build. GoFr’s framework overview and project repository describe the available features.

For a first version, REST is a natural fit if clients need a stable set of operations such as checking availability, placing a hold, confirming a booking, and cancelling it. The API contract should make those actions and their state changes explicit. GoFr’s official site describes its REST defaults with the sentence, “Default behaviour is how ‘you’ would design a REST API.” That is the framework’s positioning, not an independent assessment.
Model the booking as a reservation lifecycle
A surf lesson has limited capacity: once a place is promised to one customer, it should not also be promised to another. A useful design question is when a request temporarily claims a place and what event makes that reservation final.

Hold first, then confirm
SurfBooking’s partner API documents a two-step flow: create a booking on hold, then confirm it. Its documentation says that an expired hold releases the slot and describes confirmation as idempotent. This is one vendor’s published workflow, not a universal requirement, but it illustrates an important choice for a custom API: treat a reservation as a stateful process rather than a single undifferentiated “book” operation. See the SurfBooking partner API documentation.
A custom service adopting this pattern would need to define the hold’s expiry, which statuses count against capacity, and how confirmation and expiry interact. The documentation does not establish a universally correct hold duration. Choose one based on the actual checkout flow, and make expiry behavior visible to clients so they can recover rather than assume a place is still reserved.

Make retries safe
Clients may retry after a timeout without knowing whether the server completed the original request. Idempotent confirmation helps prevent a repeated confirmation from creating a second booking, but the service must decide how to handle retries for the other state-changing operations too. Define what a repeated request returns and how the client identifies the original attempt; do not assume a network retry means the first request failed.

SurfBooking’s page states a limit of 120 requests per minute per API key; requests beyond it receive HTTP 429 with a Retry-After: 60 header. That figure is specific to SurfBooking, and the page does not state a year. It is not a GoFr default or a general booking-API limit. Clients integrating with that API should respect the documented response and recheck the vendor’s current terms because limits can change.

Choose a payment boundary before designing confirmation
Payment and reservation are related, but they are not necessarily the same operation. Glofox’s booking workflow documentation distinguishes payment taken in person from payment processed by the app or another platform. It also shows that a booking request can carry payment-related choices, guest-booking information, and a charge flag. Those are Glofox-specific fields, not GoFr features or requirements for a custom API. See Glofox’s bookings workflow.
For a custom service, settle the sequence explicitly: whether a place is held before payment, whether confirmation waits for payment success, and what happens if payment fails or the user abandons checkout. If payment is handled elsewhere or in person, represent that boundary clearly in the booking state and API response. Avoid treating a successful reservation response as proof that payment was collected unless the service actually guarantees that.

Decide whether REST or GraphQL fits the clients
GoFr also documents a schema-first GraphQL option. The guide says to provide a schema in ./configs/schema.graphqls, register query and mutation resolvers, and access registered operations at /graphql; it also documents a playground route. These details show that GraphQL is available, not that it is better for a surf booking API. See the GoFr GraphQL guide.
Choose based on the clients’ needs and the contract you want to operate. If customers and staff need a small, predictable set of booking actions, REST can keep the interface straightforward. If clients need flexible combinations of availability and lesson data, GraphQL may be worth evaluating, while adding schema and resolver responsibilities. The cited guide does not compare performance or recommend either approach for booking systems.
Plan authentication around who is calling
GoFr’s authentication guide documents Basic authentication, API keys, and OAuth/JWT validation against a JWKS endpoint. The appropriate mechanism depends on the caller and trust boundary—for example, whether the API is called by a trusted partner, a user-facing application, or another service. Authentication does not by itself settle authorization: the service still needs rules for which caller may view, create, confirm, or cancel a booking. See GoFr’s authentication guide.
Turn the design into an implementation checklist
- Inventory safety: define how capacity is claimed, when a hold expires, and how cancellation or expiry makes a place available again.
- Payment boundary: specify whether payment is collected before confirmation, in person, or by an external system, and how failure affects the reservation.
- Retry behavior: document which operations are idempotent and what clients should do after timeouts or rate-limit responses.
- Integration scope: decide whether the service owns lesson and availability data or consumes an existing partner feed.
- Operations: plan authentication, observability, rate limiting, and visibility into dependency health.
These are design questions raised by the documented framework and vendor workflows, not claims about an author’s tested implementation. The GoFr repository currently states Go 1.24 or later as a prerequisite; check the repository for the requirement that applies to the version you plan to use.
