A lateral transfer, promotion, and temporary assignment may follow different rules; before approaching colleagues, check how your organization handles eligibility, applications, manager notification, approvals, and release dates.
What kind of internal move are you considering?
Start by naming the move you want. The label can affect which process applies and what you should compare.

- Lateral transfer: You move to a different team or role without necessarily moving up a level. The new work may broaden your experience or build skills that are useful later, but the move does not guarantee a promotion.
- Promotion: You pursue a role with greater scope or a higher level. It may involve a competitive application and a separate assessment from the process for a lateral move.
- Temporary assignment: You take on work in another team for a defined period. The arrangement may require decisions about coverage, the end date, and whether you return to your current role.
Do not assume these categories share one approval path. Your employer’s policy is the authority for your situation.

Check the rules before you start conversations
Find the current internal mobility, transfer, or temporary-assignment policy. If it is not clear which policy applies, ask HR about the rule for your employee group and location. Clarify the points that could affect your decision:

- Whether you meet eligibility requirements, such as time in your current role or standing requirements, if any.
- Whether you apply through a job posting, are considered for an approved position, or need a different form of approval.
- When your current manager is notified, who makes that notification, and whether the timing differs for an initial inquiry and a formal application.
- What role the current manager, receiving manager, and HR each play, and who has authority to make the decision.
- How release dates and handovers are arranged if you are selected.
- For a temporary assignment, how long it lasts and what happens when it ends.
Manager approval is not a universal requirement, and employers do not share one standard notice period. For example, Cornell University encourages employees to discuss career development with their present supervisor before pursuing another opportunity, but that is Cornell’s policy, not a general rule. Columbia University describes a formal transfer path involving an approved position, confirmed funding, a job description, and communication between departments for the employee groups covered by its policy. These examples show why you should verify the process that applies to you rather than rely on a colleague’s experience elsewhere.
Compare the opportunity, not just the team name
A move is easier to evaluate when you understand what will change and what is still unknown. Ask the receiving manager or recruiter for details that are relevant to your decision, and distinguish confirmed terms from details that have not been stated.

| What to compare | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|
| Move type | Is this a lateral transfer, promotion, or temporary assignment? |
| Role and skills | What work will you own, what capabilities will you develop, and how will success be assessed? |
| Level and pay | Will the role change your level or compensation? If the posting or policy does not say, ask rather than infer. |
| Eligibility and selection | What are the requirements, application steps, decision makers, and expected timeline? |
| Notification and release | When will your current manager be told, and how will the teams agree on your release date? |
| Transition support | What handover, onboarding, access, and workload arrangements will each team provide? |
Lateral mobility may be worthwhile even when it is not a promotion. A study published online in Management Science on April 2, 2024, analyzed eight years of personnel data from one large U.S. healthcare company. Its abstract reports that employees who made lateral moves were more likely to be promoted later and had substantially higher pay growth than a matched sample, but the abstract gives no effect sizes. This observational finding from one company does not establish that a lateral move will produce the same result for every employee or sector.

Discuss your goals and the practical transition
If policy or notification rules allow you to speak with your current manager, frame the conversation around the work you want to do and the capabilities you hope to build. Explain why the role interests you, what relevant experience you bring, and how you would protect important work during the transition. A focused discussion can make your goals clearer without assuming that your manager controls every stage of the process.

Ask the receiving manager about the role’s priorities, selection steps, expected start date, and onboarding. A Microsoft software-team onboarding case study drew on interviews with 32 developers moving to new teams and 15 engineering managers, plus surveys of 189 developers and 37 managers. It addresses the practical transition to a new team; its samples do not establish a universal transfer rule.
Managers also have to weigh timing and team impact. Australian Public Service Commission guidance recommends considering organizational strategy, employee development, effects on the team, timing, and the possible consequences of denying a temporary move. It is guidance for Australian public-service managers, not a rule for other employers. A UK Civil Service guide describes a formal transfer process involving the employee, manager, and HR for moves between government departments and agencies; that process likewise does not apply universally.

Agree on the handover and release date
Do not treat selection as the end of the process. Before you move, agree with the relevant managers on a release date and make the work transfer concrete:
- List active projects, upcoming deadlines, open decisions, and key contacts.
- Name an owner for each responsibility that will continue after you leave.
- Document useful context, dependencies, and risks so the next owner can act without relying on informal memory.
- Transfer access and files through your organization’s approved processes; do not share credentials.
- Agree which work you will finish, which will be handed over, and what will stop or be reassigned.
- Confirm the receiving team’s onboarding plan, initial priorities, and any training or access needed.
For a temporary assignment, also record the expected end date, review points, and plan for returning to or moving from your original role. The current team’s capacity, the receiving team’s needs, and your own start date all belong in the transition discussion.
