A strong Dragon’s Dogma 2 party covers three jobs before it chases maximum damage: healing, frontline control, and whichever ranged, elemental, or damage option your Arisen and main pawn lack. Your four-character group consists of the Arisen, one persistent main pawn, and up to two hired support pawns. Hire for role coverage, useful skills, suitable equipment and behavior—not appearance or vocation alone—and replace support pawns when their level or gear falls behind.
How the pawn party is structured
Capcom’s current PlayStation 5 FAQ lists four characters as the maximum party size, including the Arisen. In practice, that means one Arisen, one main pawn that remains yours, and no more than two support pawns hired from a riftstone. The specialist pawn guidance checked on October 17, 2026, describes the same one-main-pawn-plus-two-support-pawns structure.

Support pawns do not gain levels while they travel with you. Their level, equipment and role therefore become progressively less suitable as your Arisen advances or reaches a new area. Treat them as renewable party slots rather than permanent investments: dismiss and replace one when it no longer contributes at the level your current adventure requires.

| Party need | Typical pawn choice | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Healing and recovery | Mage | That the vocation has the healing ability Anodyne equipped; check skills and equipment rather than assuming every support Mage is a healer. |
| Frontline presence | Fighter or Warrior | Appropriate level, weapon skills and equipment for the area, plus behavior that suits close-range engagement. |
| Missing damage or coverage | A ranged, elemental or other damage-focused vocation | Choose the capability your Arisen and main pawn do not already provide. |
This is a broadly useful template, not an official ranking or a guarantee that one composition wins every encounter. If your Arisen already supplies reliable healing, for example, the first hired slot can cover another weakness. The deciding principle is coverage: every slot should add a function the party would otherwise struggle to perform.

Audit your own two characters before hiring
Do not begin at a riftstone by browsing random pawns. First identify what the Arisen and main pawn already do well. Note whether they can keep allies alive, hold enemies’ attention at close range, attack from a distance, contribute elemental damage and handle the kinds of interactions you expect during exploration. The two support slots should close the most consequential gaps.
- List your reliable tools. Include the vocations, equipped weapon skills and the practical jobs your Arisen and main pawn already cover.
- Mark the dangerous omission. A party that lacks healing may be forced to retreat; one without a frontline may have trouble controlling pressure; one without ranged or elemental capability may struggle when close combat is a poor fit.
- Reserve one slot for coverage. Avoid hiring a duplicate simply because it looks powerful if the duplicate leaves a critical task unfilled.
- Recheck after major progression. Your preferred roles can change as your level, vocation and equipment change, so the original hiring decision should not become permanent by habit.
Use a riftstone hiring checklist
Once you know the missing role, inspect each candidate systematically. The hiring screen gives you more useful evidence than a pawn’s appearance or vocation label alone.
| Check | Why it matters | Decision rule |
|---|---|---|
| Vocation | Shows the pawn’s broad combat role. | Use it as the starting filter, not the final decision. |
| Level | Indicates whether the pawn is appropriate for your current progression. | Prefer a level that fits the area and your party rather than keeping an outdated hire. |
| Equipped weapon skills | Determines what the pawn can actually contribute in combat. | Confirm that the displayed skills support the role you need. |
| Inclination | Influences behavior and how the pawn approaches situations. | Choose behavior that complements your plan instead of creating another source of conflict. |
| Specialization | Adds utility or autonomous behavior beyond the basic vocation. | Value a specialization when it solves a real party or exploration need. |
| Equipment | Affects whether the pawn can survive and perform in the current area. | Reject a high-level candidate whose equipment is clearly unsuitable. |
This inspection also prevents a common mistake: selecting a support Mage and assuming the word “Mage” guarantees healing. Look at the equipped abilities and the pawn’s overall setup before spending the hire.
When a Mage healer is the right choice
For many parties, one healing Mage is the safest first support hire. Anodyne is the healing ability to look for. It is the presence of that equipped ability—not the vocation name by itself—that establishes the healing function you want.
Anodyne versus Chirurgeon
Chirurgeon is a specialization concerned with autonomous use of curative items. It does not itself grant spell healing. A pawn can therefore provide item-use utility without replacing a Mage equipped with Anodyne. If your party needs dependable spell-based recovery, verify Anodyne directly.
How to evaluate the support Mage
- Confirm that Anodyne appears among the equipped weapon skills.
- Check the pawn’s level and equipment against your current area, since a healer that cannot survive cannot sustain the party.
- Review inclination and specialization for behavior that fits your group’s needs.
- Keep the Mage when the healing function remains valuable; replace it when the level, equipment or role no longer matches your progression.
If the Arisen or main pawn already supplies the healing your group can reliably use, the Mage slot is not mandatory. Spend that support slot on the uncovered role instead, but make the choice consciously rather than assuming every party must contain the same vocation.
Choosing a frontline Fighter or Warrior
A frontline pawn gives the party a close-range presence that can occupy attention and provide control while other characters act. Fighter and Warrior are practical choices for this job. The important question is not which label is universally superior; it is whether the candidate’s equipped weapon skills, level and equipment make it a useful frontline addition to your particular group.

Frontline selection questions
- Does the candidate’s level fit the enemies and area you are currently tackling?
- Are the displayed weapon skills consistent with close-range control rather than a role your party already covers?
- Will the pawn’s inclination produce behavior you can work with during combat?
- Is its equipment good enough that it can remain active instead of becoming a liability?
Do not recruit a second frontline pawn automatically. If the Arisen and main pawn already occupy enemies effectively, use the remaining slot for ranged, elemental or other damage coverage.
Use the final slot to add missing damage or reach
The third support role should be deliberately flexible. It may supply ranged attacks, elemental capability or another form of damage that the first three characters lack. This slot is where party composition should respond most directly to your current build.
Avoid redundant hires
Two pawns can perform the same broad job and still be different, but redundancy has a cost: the party may have less healing, frontline control or reach than the encounter demands. Compare the candidate’s vocation and equipped skills with the Arisen and main pawn before hiring. If both existing characters already cover the proposed hire’s function, keep searching for the missing capability.

- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Pawns create the feeling of a cooperative gameplay experience by offering unique characteristics, skills, and knowledge gained from their experiences with other Arisen.

Match the slot to the immediate problem
Choose the capability that solves the next meaningful obstacle, not an abstract idea of the “best” pawn. If your group is safe at close range but lacks reach, prioritize a ranged option. If it lacks elemental or other damage coverage, prioritize that instead. Because support pawns can be replaced, this slot can change as your route, level and build change.

Two pawns with the same vocation can feel very different because inclination and specialization affect behavior and utility. Read both fields before hiring. A pawn that technically fills the right role but behaves in a way that conflicts with your party plan may contribute less than a slightly less impressive candidate whose behavior fits.
Think of these fields as behavior checks:
- Combat fit: Does the inclination support the way your party wants to engage rather than pulling the pawn into an unwanted pattern?
- Exploration fit: Does the specialization offer utility that matters on your route?
- Coverage fit: Does the pawn add something new, or merely repeat a function you already have?
Do not treat specialization as a substitute for the core role. A useful item-oriented specialization does not turn a non-healing pawn into a spell healer, just as a desirable behavior does not compensate for unsuitable level or equipment.
Use party commands instead of letting pawns operate passively
Pawns become more useful when you give clear commands at the right time. Capcom’s manual documents the Go command as a specific tool rather than a generic encouragement: during combat it directs pawns to spread out, and while exploring it prompts them to interact with nearby treasure chests, mechanisms, gathering spots or similar targets in the indicated direction.
During combat
Use Go when spreading the party out is preferable to keeping every character in one cluster. The command can make the group respond to the battlefield instead of repeating a fixed formation. Your role is to decide when separation helps and when keeping allies together is safer; the command is an active control, not an automatic solution to every fight.
During exploration
Point the command toward a nearby object or location when you want pawns to investigate. Go can prompt interaction with the indicated treasure chest, mechanism, gathering spot or similar target. This is especially useful when you want the party to search deliberately instead of walking past an obvious point of interest.
Replace support pawns before they become liabilities
Because hired pawns do not gain levels while traveling, their usefulness has a clear expiration condition. Reassess them whenever your Arisen advances substantially, your party changes vocation, your equipment improves or you enter an area where the current hire is no longer appropriate.
- Compare the support pawn’s level with your current party and destination.
- Inspect whether its equipment still suits the area.
- Check whether its role remains necessary after your own build changes.
- Dismiss and search again when the pawn fails one of those checks.
Replacement is not a judgment about the pawn’s absolute quality. It is maintenance: a previously good hire can become a poor fit because the party around it has changed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set a pawn quest to improve the hiring cycle
At a riftstone, you can set a pawn quest. Capcom documents that a pawn quest can award the hiring Arisen a chosen item or a sum of gold. Pawn quests can also help your main pawn obtain hires and pawn badges. Setting a clear quest gives other players a reason to hire your main pawn and can support the same network from which you recruit support pawns.
What this means for your main pawn
Your main pawn becomes available to other players after you rest at an inn while connected. If you want the pawn to appear for potential hires, connect before resting at an inn. The availability is tied to that online condition; it is not something to assume from simply having created the pawn.

Platform and offline limits
Capcom says you can hire pawns serving friends or other players around the world as support pawns, but hiring is limited to the same platform. A player on another platform cannot be treated as an available cross-platform hire.
Offline play still permits the maximum four-character party. You can therefore travel with the Arisen, main pawn and two support positions in the party structure even when you are not using online pawn hiring. The online restriction affects whose pawns you can hire and how your main pawn becomes available to others, not the four-character party limit itself.
Compare candidate parties with a consistent framework
There is no published universal best-party ranking or comparative win-rate figure to rely on. Instead, compare candidate combinations against the dimensions that directly affect a useful party.

| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |

| Role coverage | Does the group cover healing, frontline control and ranged or elemental damage where needed? |
| Skill quality | Do the displayed weapon skills support the job you hired the pawn to perform? |
| Survivability and equipment | Can the pawns’ level and equipment handle the current area? |
| Behavior fit | Do inclination and specialization complement the way your party operates? |
| Replacement effort | Will you need to replace the pawn soon because its level, equipment or role is already behind? |
A candidate that scores well across all five dimensions is generally a better hire for your current journey than one that excels in only a single category.
Common party-building problems and fixes
“My Mage is not healing”
Check the equipped skills first. The vocation name does not prove that Anodyne is equipped. Also distinguish Chirurgeon’s autonomous curative-item use from spell healing; Chirurgeon does not grant Anodyne or another healing spell by itself.
“The party feels weak after several levels”
Review the support pawns’ levels and equipment. Hired pawns do not level during your travels, so dismiss outdated hires and recruit replacements that match your current progression.
“Everyone does the same job”
Audit role coverage again. Replace the redundant support pawn with the ranged, elemental, healing or frontline capability the Arisen and main pawn do not supply.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“A pawn has the right vocation but behaves badly”
Inspect inclination and specialization before accepting the hire. Behavior is part of the selection criteria, and a mismatch can undermine an otherwise suitable vocation.
“A friend’s pawn is unavailable”
Confirm that both players are on the same platform. Cross-platform pawn hiring is limited, so a friend’s pawn on another platform cannot be selected through the normal hiring system.
A repeatable maintenance routine
Use this short routine whenever you reach a new stage of the adventure:
- Record what the Arisen and main pawn currently cover.
- Identify the single most important missing function.
- At a riftstone, inspect vocation, level, weapon skills, inclination, specialization and equipment for each candidate.
- Hire a pawn that adds coverage instead of duplicating a secure role.
- Use Go deliberately in combat and exploration when spreading out or investigating an indicated target is useful.
- After progression or a change in build, reassess the two support pawns and replace any that no longer fit.
- Set a pawn quest for your main pawn and rest at an inn while connected if you want the pawn to become available to other players.
The result is not a permanently “best” party. It is a party that remains balanced because you continually match each slot to the roles, behavior and equipment your current journey actually requires.
