Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse a local controller and devices whose controls and automations run over your home network—not only through a vendor’s cloud. That makes internet loss a useful buying test, but it does not guarantee service through a failed router, controller, Wi-Fi network, or power supply.
What “works with the internet unplugged” should mean
For a fair test, disconnect the internet connection to your home while leaving household power, the router or access point, the local network, and the smart-home controller running. A device using a local connection may remain controllable, and automations hosted on a working local controller may continue. Home Assistant says its local protocols do not need internet access and identifies Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and ESPHome as options. Home Assistant’s FAQ describes choosing devices that work locally as the most reliable way to keep a smart home running through an internet outage.

This is a test of WAN loss, not a promise that the whole system is resilient to every failure. Losing the router or Wi-Fi is a different scenario; losing the controller can interrupt automations hosted on it. Whether devices retain any direct device-to-device behavior depends on their specific setup, so check model documentation rather than assuming it.
What can stop working when the internet is down
- Cloud-only control: If a device depends on its manufacturer’s cloud service, the cloud-based control path is unavailable during an outage.
- Remote access: Accessing the home from outside requires an internet path. Home Assistant describes its local network address for at-home access and Home Assistant Cloud as an internet tunnel for remote access. See the Companion app networking documentation.
- Some assistant features and integrations: Home Assistant lists its Cloud remote-access features, Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa integrations, updates, and app-store access among functions that need internet. This does not mean every voice command or device fails in the same way; the outcome depends on the integration and connection mode. Check Home Assistant’s FAQ.
- Updates and app downloads: Local control may remain, but obtaining updates or installing apps can still require internet service. Home Assistant’s FAQ identifies these as internet-dependent.
Check the whole control path, not just the radio name
A Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, or ESPHome label does not by itself prove that a particular device will work locally with your controller. The device, its integration, the controller, any required radio or coordinator, and the local network all need to be present and compatible.
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by SmartThings: Connect, monitor, and automate your home through the SmartThings app. Build a reliable, unified smart home using Samsung's proven ecosystem
- Matter + Zigbee Smart Home Hub: Supports the newest Matter standard plus Zigbee for lighting, sensors, plugs, switches, thermostats, and more - thousands of compatible devices. PLEASE NOTE: Z-Wave not supported
- Easy Setup with Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Get started in minutes using Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection for apartments, houses, and expanding smart home systems - Z-Wave not supported
- Automations That Work for You: Create custom routines for security, lighting, comfort, and energy savings. Many local automations continue working even if your internet goes offline
- Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings
For example, Home Assistant’s ZHA documentation requires a stable local serial connection to its Zigbee coordinator. If that coordinator or its connection fails, the local Zigbee path is affected even if the internet connection is fine. Review the ZHA requirements.

Compare devices and controllers before buying
- Cloud dependency: Find out whether the exact device and the integration you plan to use support local control, or whether commands pass through the manufacturer’s cloud.
- Required hardware: Confirm whether your controller includes the needed protocol support or needs a separate coordinator, radio, or Thread border router.
- Outage behavior: Separate basic local control and controller-hosted automations from remote access, voice features, updates, and app downloads. Look for documentation about the specific functions you intend to use.
- Compatibility: Verify the exact model against the controller’s integration documentation or tested-device list.
- Failure scope: Consider internet loss, router or Wi-Fi loss, controller failure, and power loss as separate scenarios. Evidence that a device works without internet does not establish how it behaves through those other failures.
What local-control examples do—and do not—prove
Home Assistant Green and protocol accessories
Home Assistant Green is one example of a local controller. Its product page says it can work with Matter devices over Wi-Fi or Ethernet after setup, and that Thread-based Matter devices need a Thread border router. The page describes Connect ZBT-2 as an accessory for Zigbee and Thread connectivity, while stating that Thread support is under development. Treat that status as a specific product caveat, not as a guarantee that the accessory will provide complete Thread support. See the Home Assistant Green product information.

- Comprehensive Kit for Complete Leak Protection: This bundle includes 3 YoLink Water Leak Sensors, 1 Smart Valve Controller, 1 EVO Valve Manipulator/Operator, and 1 YoLink Regular Hub. The perfect solution for home or business owners looking to prevent costly water damage with a smart, easy-to-install system.
- Reliable Unique Device-to-Device (D2D) Functionality: After setting up D2D control, the leak sensors and valve controller communicate directly, even during power loss or network disruption. When a leak is detected, the valve automatically closes, ensuring protection without the need for internet or power.
- Long Range Connectivity: YoLink’s system utilizes LoRa technology, offering a communication range of up to 2,034 feet between the devices and the hub. This allows you to place the leak sensors in hard-to-reach areas, such as basements, attics, or remote storage rooms, ensuring your entire home is covered, no matter how far away the sensor is from the hub.
- Customizable Notification Options: Choose from SMS, App alerts, and Email to stay informed about leaks. iOS users will also receive Critical Alerts. Each account includes 5 free SMS per month. With this kit, you’ll get 30 free SMS alerts (5 per device for 5 devices). Additional devices add 5 more free SMS per month, keeping you connected and protected.
- Seamless Third-Party Integrations: Easily integrate your system with Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT, and Home Assistant for added convenience. Control your leak sensors and valve controller with simple voice commands or automation, giving you complete control over your home’s water security.
Alexa-compatible devices
Amazon Developer documentation describes a local connection option that can allow Alexa to control a device during internet outages. The statement applies to that documented local connection path, not to every Alexa feature or every compatible device. The same documentation also describes cloud-managed options, so verify the connection mode and supported functions for the particular device. Read Amazon’s local connectivity documentation.

- Choose a low-risk time and identify a device with a simple local control and an automation you can observe.
- Leave household power, the router or access point, the local network, and the controller on; disconnect only the home’s internet connection.
- Try the local control path you expect to use at home, then observe whether the relevant automation runs.
- Separately check functions that may need internet, such as remote access, cloud integrations, updates, or assistant features. Do not treat one successful function as proof that all features work offline.
- Reconnect the internet and confirm that cloud-dependent services recover. Document which functions worked and which did not for each exact device and integration.
This test can reveal WAN dependencies in your own configuration; it does not establish resilience to a router, Wi-Fi, controller, coordinator, or power failure.
