That can hide a submitter’s identity from other server members, but it does not guarantee anonymity from the bot operator: the interaction, logs, storage, and moderation workflow determine what the operator can see. This guide builds the bot around that distinction, with minimal permissions, private acknowledgements, cogs, and operational logs that omit confession text.
What “anonymous” means in this bot
A Discord confession bot can publish text without displaying the author’s name or account to the server. That is anonymity to readers of the posted message, not necessarily anonymity to the bot operator or anyone with access to its data. An implementation that stores a Discord user ID alongside a submission, logs interaction details, or retains a review queue may expose the author or content.

Set the trust boundary before writing code: decide who can receive submissions, whether moderators review them, what is retained, and how deletion requests work. Discord’s Developer Policy says applications must not attempt to re-identify or de-anonymize API data. Discord’s Developer Terms also require an accessible privacy policy explaining collection, use, sharing, and deletion. See Discord Developer Policy and Discord Developer Terms of Service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose slash commands instead of reading ordinary messages
A slash command such as /confess makes submission an explicit, user-initiated interaction. Discord application commands are registered through HTTP endpoints and can be configured for contexts and permissions. For a server-only confession flow, configure the command for the intended server context and limit administrative or moderation commands to trusted roles.

A message listener is a different design: it inspects ordinary server messages and can require the privileged message-content intent. A slash-command flow does not need to read unrelated chat, so it is the narrower fit for this feature. Discord classifies message content, guild members, and presence as privileged intents; enable only those your product actually needs. Intent access and review rules can change. Discord’s support article updated June 10, 2026 describes the current policy, so check it when configuring a live application: What are Privileged Intents?
Organize the bot with cogs
In discord.py, a cog is a class that groups related commands, listeners, and state. Register cogs with Bot.add_cog(). A small bot can keep submission, moderation, and configuration responsibilities separate:

- Includes Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Model B with 1.5GHz 64-bit quad-core CPU (4GB RAM)
- Includes Pre-Loaded 32GB EVO+ Micro SD Card (Class 10), USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Premium High-Gloss Raspberry Pi 4 Case with Integrated Fan Mount, CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan

- CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)
ConfessionCog: validates submissions, sends the private acknowledgement, and posts approved text.ModerationCog: provides trusted moderators with review or removal tools if the server uses a queue.AdminCog: lets trusted administrators configure the destination channel and other operational settings.
This separation makes it easier to inspect permissions and data handling for each capability. Consult the discord.py Cogs documentation for cog setup and registration details.
Build the submission flow
The safest baseline is to accept a bounded text field, validate it, acknowledge privately, then send only the intended confession text to the configured destination. A modal can collect longer or multiple fields where the current Discord API and discord.py version support that interaction pattern; for a single field, a slash-command option may be simpler.

- Build Quality: Solid ABS shell and well made components in one place make it strong and convenient to travel
- Programming Lessons: This raspberry pi 5 learning kit ships with step by step instructions and provides 21 lessons to take you through identifying components reading code and running it in the terminal
- Configure a destination. Store the target channel through an administrator-only command or deployment configuration. Check that the bot can view and send messages there.
- Accept explicit input. Define a maximum length appropriate to the server and reject empty or whitespace-only submissions. Normalize text conservatively; do not silently rewrite a user’s meaning.
- Apply moderation controls. Decide whether submissions post immediately or enter a review queue. Consider server rules, abuse reporting, and a removal process before enabling public posting.
- Respond privately. Use an ephemeral interaction response for a discreet acknowledgement in the Discord client, such as “Your submission was received.” This keeps the response out of the public channel; it does not conceal interaction data from the bot or establish operator-blind anonymity.
- Publish only the intended content. Do not include the submitter’s username, avatar, user ID, or interaction metadata in the public message unless that is explicitly part of the design.
Discord requires an initial interaction response within three seconds. If validation, review, or other work may take longer, defer promptly, then edit the response or send a follow-up. An interaction receives only one initial response. Follow-up interaction tokens are valid for 15 minutes. See the Receiving and Responding to Interactions documentation and the discord.py Interactions API reference.
Protect the bot token and other credentials
The Discord bot token is a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to operate the bot. Keep it in the deployment environment’s secret configuration, not in source code, a public repository, screenshots, or logs. Restrict access to the deployment secrets and rotate the token if it is exposed. Discord’s Developer Terms require confidential treatment of credentials and reasonable security measures.

Do not confuse a separate random reference identifier with Discord’s bot token. If an internal correlation reference is useful, Python’s secrets.token_urlsafe() can generate one; it does not replace or secure the Discord credential. Use the official Python secrets documentation for that API.

Rich logging should mean logs that help diagnose operations, not logs that capture every user input. Configure logging centrally and create module-level loggers with logging.getLogger(__name__). Python logging supports hierarchical loggers and basic root configuration with basicConfig(); see the Python logging documentation.

Prefer structured operational events such as command name, success or failure, latency, error category, and a non-identifying correlation ID when useful. Do not log confession bodies, Discord bot tokens, interaction tokens, or unnecessary user identifiers. Redaction is a design responsibility, not an automatic property of logging frameworks. If an exception could include submitted text or other sensitive data, sanitize it before recording.
Decide whether to store submissions
Handling a submission in memory and posting it immediately reduces the amount of retained data, but does not provide a review queue or durable recovery. Persistent storage can support moderation and audits, while increasing the consequences of unauthorized access and the work required to honor deletion requests.
- If you do not retain submissions: avoid copying them into application logs, analytics, or backups. Explain what happens at submission and after posting.
- If you retain submissions: define the purpose, access controls, retention period, deletion method, and backup handling before launch. Restrict stored identity links and content to people who need them.
- For either design: provide an accessible privacy notice covering collection, purpose, sharing, retention, and deletion requests. Follow applicable legal obligations and Discord’s terms.
Discord’s Developer Terms require privacy transparency, deletion handling, credential protection, and security safeguards, including encryption of API data at rest. The exact storage design and retention period depend on the bot’s actual features; do not promise deletion from backups or systems that your implementation cannot reliably clear.
Test permissions and failure cases before launch
Test with a non-administrator account in a private test server and verify both the public output and what the bot operator can inspect. Check the following:
Quick Recap
- The command is available only in the intended context, and privileged commands are restricted to trusted roles.
- The bot can post to the configured destination but does not hold unrelated permissions it does not need.
- Invalid, oversized, or blank submissions are rejected without exposing them publicly.
- A private acknowledgement appears only to the submitter, and a delayed operation defers within Discord’s response window.
- Logs, exception reports, persistent records, and backups do not reveal content or credentials beyond what the privacy notice describes.
- Moderators can handle abusive submissions and users have a clear route to request deletion where data is retained.
