Then test that responses still arrive incrementally through the full browser-to-server path.
What changes between localhost and a live URL?
There are three separate stages: your development server runs on your computer; Docker packages and runs that server in a container; and a hosting platform or remote server makes the container reachable from outside your computer. A port mapping such as -p 3000:3000 connects a host port to a container port, but it does not by itself create a public address. The host, its firewall and routing, and—if you use your own domain—DNS and HTTPS determine how people reach the service.

The tutorial matching this topic describes a Node.js chatbot with a small web interface, a local example at http://localhost:3000, and a Railway deployment that produces a public URL. Those details describe that tutorial’s example; its implementation could not be independently verified. The practical stages below apply whether you choose a managed platform such as Railway or operate a remote Docker host yourself.

Prepare the app to run as a web service
Keep the server process alive
Your container needs to start the application’s web server as its foreground process. Confirm that it serves the chat page and its response endpoint, and that it listens on the expected port. A server bound only to localhost inside the container may not accept connections arriving through Docker’s network; configure it to listen on an address reachable from the container network, commonly 0.0.0.0. Use the actual port and start command for your app rather than assuming every Node.js project uses port 3000.

Build an image without bundling local clutter or secrets
A Dockerfile defines how to install dependencies, copy the required application files, and start the server. A multi-stage build can separate build-time dependencies from the runtime image when the app has a build step. Add a .dockerignore file to keep items such as local dependency directories, version-control data, and local environment files out of the build context. Do not put API keys or other secrets in the Dockerfile or image: images can be stored, transferred, and reused beyond the machine where they were built.
Run the container locally and check the stream
Build the image, pass configuration when starting the container, and map a host port to the port on which the app listens inside the container. For example, if your app listens on port 3000, the tutorial excerpt’s local pattern is:

docker build -t streaming-chatbot .
docker run -p 3000:3000 --env-file .env streaming-chatbot
This maps host port 3000 to container port 3000 and loads environment variables from a local file at runtime. Adjust the image name, port, and environment configuration for your app. Keep .env out of the image and out of source control; use the hosting provider’s secret or environment-variable settings for production credentials.
Open http://localhost:3000 and send a prompt. Check that the answer appears progressively, not only after the complete response has been generated. The exact tutorial excerpt describes a browser using fetch and reading the response body chunk by chunk. That is one streaming pattern; if your app instead uses Server-Sent Events (SSE), implement and test the SSE event flow. Docker Agent’s documentation, for example, describes its own agent execution endpoints as SSE and demonstrates a curl -N request; this is not evidence that every chatbot endpoint uses SSE. Choose a hosting route
| Route | What it handles | What you need to configure |
|---|---|---|
| Managed platform such as Railway | The platform runs the deployed app and may provide a generated domain. Railway’s guide describes an AI chatbot with streaming responses and a generated domain, but its current deployment steps were not independently verified here. | Follow the provider’s current instructions for deploying your source or image, setting runtime variables, and identifying the app’s listening port. Confirm the platform’s routing and domain behavior for your project. |
| Self-managed remote Docker host | You control the server and its Docker deployment. Docker documents connecting Compose to a remote Docker daemon through environment variables. | Arrange server access, deployment configuration, firewall and host-port routing, restart behavior, logs, DNS if using a domain, and HTTPS termination. |
These options are not a cost or capacity comparison: the sources here establish no comparable prices or scale limits. Choose based on how much server and routing configuration you want to operate yourself.
Deploy with a managed platform
Deploy the app or image using the provider’s current workflow, then set the production environment variables in its service configuration rather than copying a development .env file into the image. Check what port the platform expects the process to use and make the app listen accordingly. After deployment, use the platform’s assigned domain or configure a custom domain through its current controls. A generated domain is a hosting feature, not something Docker creates.

Deploy to a remote Docker host
Docker’s Compose documentation describes pointing the Docker CLI at a remote daemon with DOCKER_HOST, DOCKER_TLS_VERIFY, and DOCKER_CERT_PATH set in the environment, then using regular Compose commands. The correct values depend on your host and TLS setup; obtain them from your server configuration rather than copying placeholder values.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make a self-managed deployment reachable over HTTPS
A container port is not a public domain. For a self-managed server, route traffic from the internet to the host and then to the app, typically by placing a reverse proxy in front of the container. If you want a custom domain, create a DNS record that points to the server’s public address and configure the proxy to handle HTTPS and forward requests to the app. Rocket.Chat’s Docker deployment guide illustrates this general pattern with DNS and HTTPS termination through Traefik or Nginx; it is an example of the infrastructure pattern, not a requirement to use either proxy or that application’s stack. Check the proxy’s own current security and TLS documentation before adopting a configuration. Rocket.Chat Docker deployment guide
Verify the live response, not just the landing page
- Check the deployed service: open its public URL and confirm the chat page loads. If it does not, inspect the platform’s deployment logs or the remote host’s container and proxy logs.
- Send a prompt from a browser outside the server: confirm the response begins arriving before generation is complete. A page that loads while the response waits until the end is not a successful streaming check.
- Check each layer if output is buffered or fails: verify the app’s response implementation, the listening port and host binding, the platform or reverse-proxy routing, and any proxy settings that could buffer responses. Match the checks to your implementation—chunked browser
fetchand SSE are distinct approaches. - After changing code, rebuild and recreate the service: Docker’s production guide gives this example for a Compose service named
web:
docker compose build web
docker compose up --no-deps -d web
Replace web with your Compose service name. Recheck the public page and incremental response after redeploying; a successful local container run alone does not confirm that the deployed network path preserves streaming.
Keep exposed services appropriately protected
Use runtime configuration for credentials and expose only the routes and ports the chatbot needs. Docker Agent’s security guidance warns that its API server should use --auth-token when listening on a network-reachable interface, and recommends constraining session working directories for multi-user or network-exposed deployments. Those cautions apply to Docker Agent’s API server specifically; they are not a universal configuration prescription for every Node.js chatbot. Docker Agent API documentation
